Postdoctoral Fellowship (Data Science) in Urban Resilience to Extreme Weather-Related Events Sustainability Research Network (UREx SRN) and Urban Water Innovation Network (UWIN)

About UREx and UWIN SRNs A Post-doctoral fellowship position is available at Arizona State University beginning as early as January 2018 to work jointly on UREx SRN and UWIN, two Sustainability Research Networks funded by the National Science Foundation. The Urban Resilience to Extreme Weather-Related Events Sustainability Research Network (UREx SRN) aims to generate knowledge and promote actions that will ensure resilience of cities in the face of extreme events. The network of ten cities and 17 institutions includes US and Latin American cities and conducts collaborative, interdisciplinary research across ecological/physical science, social science, and engineering domains. UREx SRN is funded by the National Science Foundation, Award Abstract # 1444755. The Urban Water Innovation Network (UWIN) aims to create technological, institutional, and management solutions to help communities increase the resilience of their water systems and enhance preparedness for responding to water crises. The network, a consortium of academic institutions and key partners across the U.S., include research, engagement and educational programs that address challenges that threaten urban water systems. The. UWIN is funded by the National Science Foundation, Award Abstract # 1444758. Job Description Under the supervision of Profs. Mikhail Chester (ASU) and Mazdak Arabi (CSU), the data postdoc will be expected to work and lead initiatives with large numbers of faculty, researchers, students, and practitioners. The postdoc will work with researchers in both networks, coordinate data science and sharing efforts, work with the ERAMs system, and work with visualization scientists. The postdoc will be directly responsible for collecting, processing, analyzing big datasets on infrastructure, ecology, socio-economics, and other variables for UREx-UWIN partner cities, leading several initiatives to develop new knowledge and insight for urban sustainability and resilience to climate change. Essential Duties Compile large datasets on cities and regions; develop novel insights for analyzing urban sustainability datasets; coordinate research meetings across multiple universities; prepare peer-reviewed journal publications in top outlets; create innovative methods for storing and visualizing urban sustainability datasets. Minimum Qualifications Possess a Ph.D. (or equivalent) at the time the position commences in a field directly related to urban sustainability or data science; have expertise and a publication record in urban data analytics, programming, and GIS analysis; and, have experience working in interdisciplinary teams.

Desired Qualifications Experience with creating, storing, managing, and analyzing large datasets for urban sustainability research; experience publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts in top journals; experience with managing large teams with diverse stakeholders.
