POSTGRADUATE NEWSLETTER MICHAELMAS 2017

UPDATE FROM OLGA GOMEZ-CASH - HEAD OF DEPARTMENT The department is engaged in the activities of a new academic year with its usual vigor: 369 students enrolled on first year courses in Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish and we launched new extra-curricular evening classes - 153 students signed up for those. It is also great to welcome two new members of staff, Dr Veronique Lane and Dr Ailsa Peate. Adding too to the ‘buzz’ are our new postgraduate students - the first students in the M year of the MLang, and our new cohort of MA and PhD students. It is a pleasure to welcome you: we are looking forward to working with you and excited about your contribution to the department’s research culture. I trust you will find the suggestions about training and development in the newsletter helpful for getting the momentum and creativity of the new year going!

DEPARTMENT NEWS & EVENTS ‘BROWN BAG’ RESEARCH SESSIONS

DeLC is running a series of hour long informal sessions designed for Postgraduate students and staff to present their ongoing research. It is an opportunity to get ideas from peers, workshop some of your thoughts and tackle issues relating to your research. The idea of the sessions is not to provide a polished paper but to work together, get ideas and practice talking about your research in a friendly, collaborative environment. The next Brown Bag Session is with Erika Fülöp on Wednesday 29th November 2017, 1:00pm-2:00pm in Bowland North Seminar Room 21. More information can be found here. If you are interested in leading a session contact Allyson Fiddler on [email protected]

MICHAELMAS 2017

NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED! Dr Carmen Rios Garcia gave the first guest Translation seminar this year, sharing her experience as a professional translator and interpreter in her talk, ‘Translating and interpreting in the medical environment: Not for the faint-hearted’. Carmen discussed the breadth of knowledge needed for medical translation, the different settings in which medical translation and interpreting take place, and gave us examples of the types of materials a translator can be faced with. Carmen also discussed effective communication with user groups, and the importance of ethics. This was a great talk to start the year with and left us all feeling interested and enthused about this field of translation and interpreting.

ACADEMIC IN FOCUS

During her time at Liverpool she also began to develop another project which focuses on the representation of women’s bodies in Mexican museum spaces, which asks whether these institutions associated with expanding knowledge are perpetuating damaged and damaging views of women in a machista society. Ailsa is co-editor of and contributor to Latin American Crime Scenes, a forthcoming collection of essays on the crime genre, which will be published by Peter Lang in 2018. She has been published in various academic journals such as the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies and the Bulletin of Latin American Research, and has written for non-academic magazines on contemporary Mexican fiction in translation.

DR AILSA PEATE – Senior Teaching Associate in Spanish Dr. Ailsa Peate joined DeLC in September 2017, three weeks after having passed her doctoral viva on Mexican and Cuban detective fiction at the University of Liverpool. Ailsa’s research background focuses on the crime narrative as a subversive and useful tool for understanding social concerns in Latin America, in particular concerning sexuality and gender.

MICHAELMAS 2017

During the final year of her PhD, Ailsa worked full-time across two research positions. Firstly as Research Associate at the Institute of Cultural Capital at the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University, she evaluated cultural policy and the cultural impacts of large events such as the 2016 Rio Olympics and the European Capital of Culture. As Research Assistant on the project Latin American Art and Museum Policy, she researched museum case studies, helped develop a regional forum for Latin American museums, and gave workshops on the politics of representation in museums. In November 2017, she will run book launches and give workshops in Buenos Aires and Rosario, Argentina, on the challenges of exhibiting digital artworks which deal with memory and trauma, with her former supervisor, Professor Claire Taylor.
