OPTIMISM

M AY 2 0 1 8

POWERFUL PROJECT Name: _____________________________________________ This month we are talking about optimism. Optimism means; “believing and expecting that everything will work out for the best.” Optimistic people look at the bright side. They know that when they are having a bad day, it is (1) temporary (it won’t last forever!), (2) specific (it’s only in one particular area- not every area in their lives), and (3) not personal (and they can do something about it!). Below, read the pessimistic thoughts. Then, change the pessimistic, negative thoughts/words to positive, optimistic thoughts/words. Pessimistic “I just got a quiz back from my teacher and I did horribly on it. I never do well. I stink at school.”

Pessimistic “I forgot my friend’s birthday! She must think I’m a terrible person and won’t forgive me ever.”

Pessimistic “I can’t believe we didn’t win! We are so unlucky and that other team must have cheated!”

Pessimistic “My coach told me I need to work harder. My coach doesn’t like me. My coaches never like me.”
