Portland’s “Dream of the 90s” Bicycle Tour (Pedalpalooza) Portland is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the US, earning a Platinum rating from the League of American Bicyclists and boasting a bicycle commute mode share above 6 percent, the highest of any major US city and 10 times the national average. But until 1990, Portland’s travel behavior was indistinguishable from other American cities, with few bicycle facilities and a bicycle commute mode share at 1 percent. How did Portland get to this point? It began with a bold vision, documented in the 1996 Bicycle Plan, to increase bicycle usage. Want to see proof that dreams can come true? This 2.5-hour guided tour of Portland’s innovative bicycle network will show how commitment to active transportation is helping to support urban redevelopment, safer pedestrian environments, greener streets, and the city’s burgeoning bicycle-based economy. The tour will conclude with a stop at a bicycle-friendly local brewery. Approximate distance: 15 miles. Dress for the weather. Fee includes bicycle and helmet rental.

Technical Tour 4 - $25 ($30 non-members)

Portland Streetcar Tour

This tour will visit the Pearl District, often cited as a premier transit-oriented development project exemplifying Portland’s “20 Minute Neighborhood” planning strategy. By limiting parking, expanding green space, and installing a streetcar line, Portland achieved a successful, high-density, pedestrianfriendly environment, and integrated affordable housing into the mix. Ultimately, it was creative partnerships between multiple city agencies and innovative developers that made this 21st-century streetcar neighborhood possible. This tour shares Portland’s lessons from “The Pearl” for designing livable urban neighborhoods, including the role of green architecture, parks, pedestrian-only streets, public art, and adaptive re-use of buildings. You will also visit the newest addition to Portland’s streetcar system, the Central Loop. You’ll see the public art installed as part of the project, storm water treatments, and the newest developments along the line. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. 7:00pm – 9:00pm Local Specialty Event

Since 1987, the Oregon Department of Transportation has been working with local communities to reconnect and enhance this national treasure so that each viewpoint is protected, the design and materials in complete harmony with the natural elements. Learn how the restored connections are bringing visitors and economic development on foot, by bike, and by car to the heart of the Gorge. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather.
