I never really thought about quarterback since then.” After in essence what was a lost junior campaign, Howard said he

is determined to make his final season in the crimson and gray a memorable one. “I think this year we are working hard on making sure everyone knows what to do,” said Howard. “I can do a lot of different stuff and they can’t stop all of it, so they will have to pick and choose which ones.” With all those options he has this year, Howard may just put his name back on the college recruiting map, but it is not something he said he is focused on now. Instead he is full concentrating on winning at least a conference title for Key West. “We are going to put on a show for them and I think they are going to like the way we play,” said Howard. “We’ve been working hard all summer, since last year, and we are just going to push and keep working.” [email protected]

IRON MEN Conchs have several players on both sides of the ball BY J.W. COOKE Key West Citizen

The Key West High football team has the athleticism, speed and skill to keep up with most teams in its classification, that is until the lack of depth factors into the equation against the Conchs as a majority of the starters will be playing on both sides of the ball this year, including the entire linebacking core. The Conchs will have as many as five linebackers on the field at one time this season which includes Jesse Garcia, Carson Hughes, Abrian Wynn, Alonzo Ridgeway and Kolby Kelleher — all of whom also play running back. “I love defense and I want to play both ways,” said Damien Alvarez jumps in front Garcia. “Just winning games of a pass at preseason practice. is really the only thing, just

winning games.” While each of the linebackers compliment each other on defense and offense, the secondary also has several players pulling double duty, including senior Damien Alvarez, who is also part of the Conchs’ running back by committee. “It’s my last year to do what I have to do on the field and in school,” said Alvarez. “I really have to go out and give the team everything I’ve got. Hopefully we can get everything done we want to and end on a winning season.” Alvarez said he is confident in the system in place despite also having Paton Hummel and quarterback Alvin Howard being used as corner backs. “We look pretty stable on defense and when we scrimmage our own team, we are able to stop the offense,” said Alvarez, who wants to lead the team in tackles after finishing third on the Defensive captain Carson Hughes talks to his father and team last year. “Our offense Conchs head coach Johnny Hughes during the preseason clas- is pretty good, so we should sic at Tommy Roberts Memorial Staidum. be set.”

Ty Torres, right, and Stervens Dor converge on a tackle during practice. Most of the two-way starters are coming into their fourth season on the Key West varsity program like senior Ty Torres, who will be working the trenches throughout the game. “It makes me feel good that I can play both sides of the ball and I’m relied upon to play both sides of the ball,” said Torres, who credits his involvement with the Conchs wrestling

program for the endurance to play both offense and defensive line. “Coach (Johnny) Hughes knows I work hard in order to learn and become a better football player and person. Most likely this is my last year, so I’m trying to get as much playing time as I can.” Torres will be joined by classmate Jojo Edwards and junior Stervens Dor on the defensive line.

Sophomores Jonathan Faatuai and Roosevelt Joseph will also pick up minutes on defense. “I like the intensity we have been bringing at practice, now we just need to bring it to the games,” said Wynn, who said his goal this season is to grab his first career interception. “I know when it’s game time our guys will be ready to play.” [email protected]

LOCKED AND LOADED Dolphins junior QB McDonald will have plenty of offensive weapons to use this season BY J.W. COOKE Key West Citizen

With six viable options at receiver this season and five more at running back, third-year Marathon High starting quarterback Jackson McDonald has numerous weapons he can use this season, Dolphins coach Paul Davis believes his team will break records. “Last year I wasn’t really a leader as much as I am this year, so more people are looking up to me,” said McDonald. “Our team is also a lot better than last year. There’s a lot more expectations and it’s a lot higher than the last few years so everyone is excited.” At receiver, the junior signal caller will have senior Esteban Sainz back for his final year, as the duo connnected for a team-high in receiving yards last season. In addition, Marathon will have returning senior Thad Goodwin getting

snaps at wideout, along with newcomers Dequain Youngblood, Jamal Qualls and Steven Hernandez — who were all important parts of a 20-win Dolphins basketball team last season — and Marathon’s soccer captain Rodrigo Avena. “I don’t think there is a corner back that can stop us,” said Qualls. “I’m really that confident about it. I think we are going to have a good season.” Even with six options at receiver and McDonald bigger and stronger — now standing at 6-foot-4, 205 pounds — it does not mean the Dolphins are going away from the ground game that has been Marathon’s primary method of attack during the building period. At running back this season, the Dolphins will be led by senior Victor Coleman, Roberto Garces and junior Kyshaun Appolon. “We are just so versatile this year that we have back ups that are even starter

Dolphins expecting shift in defensive presence Key West Citizen

Defensively the Marathon High football team has has its struggles the past few seasons, as the Dolphins have surrendered at least 20 points a game across the past seven seasons. The major difference this year is that the offense is expected to be one of the best the school has seen in numerous years, which means the defense will also need to take major strides if they are hoping to have a shot at claiming a championship. “There’s a bit more pressure, but as we get better it starts to

that of a winning record, which is something no current Marathon player has achieved during their years in the blue and gold. “Hopefully this is the first one, because that’s a memory I’d like to have for a while,” said senior lineman Jordy Mejia, who has not ever had a winning season

we have to focus on one opponent at a time and getting that first win.” Goodwin, who also will see time at receiver on offense, added that he is up for the challenge of leading the defense as a senior this season, as his brother did two years ago. “I finally get to show everyone how I lead a team while we are on defense and I’m excited,” said Goodwin. “But that means I have to make sure everyone knows what’s going on, on every play, and make sure we have a good understanding of what we are going up against.” While Goodwin will be anchor-

who led the Dolphins in tackles last year. “Once you get that mental aspect down that you’ve got this, then you’ll be good and I think we’re getting close to there.” In order to get the defense up to the offense’s pace, Bish added that it took a lot of dedication, training and repetition from him and his teammates. “We’ve been focusing on tackling on defense, so giving up a lot of points should not be as often because we have those better tackling skills now.” he said. “We have a lot of good players that are going to pull through on defense.” Goodwin said another major change

in the defense is a team-before-self mentality that they took on during offseason and in turn has made them a more complete unit. “Football as a whole is a team sport and like we’ve seen with the offense, how they have worked as a team to progress, we want to get that this year,” said Bish. “By reenforcing that team spirit, there is a brotherhood between us and makes us strong as a team.” Add on the fact that the senior class were freshmen in Paul Davis’ first season as coach and the defense has a point to prove this season. “It really makes it more personal, because we’ve all been playing together since our freshman year,” said Mejia. Hawkins, Chamberlain anchoring CS defense BY J.W. COOKE Key West Citizen

Only twice last season did the Coral Shores High football team allow more that three touchdowns in a game and it happened both times against the eventual conference champion. That is a trend the Hurricanes defense — which has surrendered more than 21 only two times in four of the last five years — is expecting once again this season, led by seniors Aiden Hawkins and Dustin Chamberlain. “It still feels like I’m coming into my freshman year of football,” said Hawkins. “So it’s nerve racking because it’s the last year I’ll be wearing this jersey. I grew up

on the sidelines getting the players water, so this was always a dream of mine to start for them. “I just have to help out my team as much as I can,” said Hawkins. “It’s a team sport and I want to do as much as I can to benefit the team, now and in the future.” That means for Hawkins, he will not be running the ball as frequently, which he started doing during his junior campaign, and instead his focus will be on anchoring the Hurricanes defense at middle linebacker, where he has been playing since his eighth grade season. “It’s what I have to do for the team,” said Hawkins. “Since we have people that can run the ball as well

as I can, I am glad to play defense. It’s really fun to play both sides of the ball.” That does not mean Hawkins is void of any offensive goals as he wants to eclipse his 500-plus rushing yards from last season, while at the same time leading the conference in tackles. As for Chamberlain, who is entering only his fourth year of playing football, he hopes to shatter his personal record of six and a half sacks he set last season, his first on defense. This year, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior said he is looking to sack the quarterback 20 time, during his first full season playing defense. “Defense is the fun side of the ball because there’s

just one person you need to get to and that’s the person with the ball,” said Chamberlain. With the added expectations come added pressure for the defensive captains, but Hawkins said after watching the generations of Hurricanes before his, he is equipped to handle anything that may happen in 2017. “There’s always pressure, I’m sure every senior feels pressure, but you just have to overcome it,” said Hawkins. “When it comes down to it, I’ve always looked up to the seniors and watched them and now it’s finally here so I’m just hoping to impact the team, and Coral Shores seniors Dustin Chamberlain, left, and Aiden Hawkins are going to be rleyed upon heavily on the defensive be the best player I can.” [email protected] side of the ball.

The running game has been the staple of the Coral Shores offense since new head coach Alphonso Bryant took over as offensive coordinator six seasons ago, with several backs in that span reaching 1,000 yards. This year is likely to be no exceptions as the ’Canes have a trio of ball handlers — seniors Tanaris Walker and Blye Hofstetter and freshman Ralph Williams — who are all eyeing that quadruple-digit mark. “In this system you won’t really know who’s getting the ball, so it will open up more opportu-

nities for all of us,” said Walker, who added he is hoping to eclipse 1,500 yards and 10 TDs. “We did well last year and hopefully we get better from last year.” While the seniors will likely see a majority of the carries this season —including starting linebacker Aiden Hawkins who rushed for more than 500 yards last season — it could be the freshman that joins the 1,000-yard club in his first year. “A lot of kids don’t get to see this kind of time as a freshman and I know my dad wishes he was in my spot when he was a kid,” said Williams. “There’s a lot of pressure, but I think I can work it out, but I’m used to pressure, because

Kubida building bonds through football

Entering his sixth year of playing football, Coral Shores senior Jay Kubida said there is no doubt he enjoys the physical side of the sport, but his truly favorite part of the game is the lifelong friendships he has built with his teammates. “I just like how football is a sport where you can unite with all your brothers,” said Kubida. “It’s a sport that really brings everyone together. On the field, you are just out there looking out for each other. Ever since Day 1 football has been a special sport and not like any other one I’ve ever played.” That’s why Kubida said he believes his teammates were so committed

’Canes starting tight end Jay Kubida will also be seeing time as defensive end, linebacker and receiver this season. to getting in the weight room during the summer months. “We really want that experience of winning on Friday night now in front of your family and school that’s pretty amazing,” said the Hurricanes tight end. “I know I’m proud of where I’ve come from and now I just wants to win a championship in this final season.” [email protected]

For the past two seasons the Coral Shores High football team’s coaching staff has been working on grooming Juan Pablo Aborezzco as the starting quarterback, but entering his junior season the expected signal caller transfer schools leaving a big hole in the Hurricanes’ offense. That was when Hurricanes coach Alphonso Bryant decided of replacing him with one quarterback, to go with a two-back system — which he used while assisting Killian High to a state title in 2004. His replacements, seniors Christian Frisone — who is following in his older brother’s footstep as Nick Frisone started under center during the 2013-14 seasons at Coral Shores — and Elijah Woods —the Hurricanes’ leading receiver a year ago. “It hasn’t been as hard as originally thought, due to the fact we both have an athletic background,” said Frisone. “I’ve been able

a quarterback you need to have that idea of everything going on anyways, so it really got a lot easier once we learned it all,” said Woods. “Everything we are doing looks really good, so we are really confident in the coach and he is confident in us,” said Woods. “If we just trust the process and what we are trying to do, then we will get done what we need to get done.”

Their receivers have faith in them too heading into the season. “I’ve played with these guys since about sixth grade, so I know the chemistry will be there,” said Kubida. “We are always on the same page about everything.” That includes each other as when not under center the other will be lined up at receiver. In this duel system, Frisone said he is looking to amass 1,000 all-purpose yards as well as an all-conference nomination, whole Woods wants 1000 rushing yards. “It will really be up to the coaches because in practice we are still basically 50/50 on reps,” said Woods. “So I guess it’s going to be 50/50 in the game and I really thinks it’s going to chance game to game.” That does not mean the two have been in competition for the starting role, In fact, it has been just the opposite and since learning about their new role for the team this season, the duo said they have been in conSee ’CANE QBS, page 15

With limited time in the offseason to transition into their newfound positions, they both echoed the same mentality of trusting their coach and the system he has put in place. “When he asked me to play quarterback this year, it wasn’t a show and I feel I am ready for it,” said Woods. “We are really confident and really eager to get out there.”
