The Grade 7s begin their senior year in the Prep school with a 5 day camp at Bundi on the Breede River. The camp offers opportunities for personal and social development through a host of activities focused on leadership, adventure and team building. Some of the highlights include: working as a team while rafting on the Breede River; facing some personal challenges on the High Ropes, and developing grit through the overnight Survivor Challenge. The Grade 7s group spends the entire camp in their class groups. In this way, bonds are strengthened between classmates, and a true spirit of camaraderie develops. As always, our weary campers return with wonderful memories and many tales to tell of friendship and adventure. A heartfelt thank you must be extended to Mrs Winnie Stubbs and the Grade 7 staff for arranging and accompanying the children on the 5-day camp.

Grade 1 Dress Up Day!

On Wednesday our Grade 1s came to school dressed up as something beginning with one of the letters (s a t p i n) that we have learnt so far. For example: ‘p’ for pirate; ‘n’ for ninja; ‘a’ for astronaut; or ‘p’ for princess. Can you guess what and who they are, and which sound they have chosen to represent?

Our 00S children have all enjoyed our first few weeks of school and have been learning so much! Visits to the library and learning commons are so exciting, and we love to hear Library Lauren's stories. We've been to the IT centre too, and investigated the B Bots. Ball skills in the BIG gym is the highlight of our week! Lots of busy happenings during the first few weeks and I'm sure there have been some tired children in the evenings!

Grade 5 Outdoor Activities! On Tuesday the Grade 5s walked down to the river next to the bridge outside Bridge House. Our aim was to prove that we can filter river water. We had to bring an empty 1L plastic bottle with layers of charcoal, dry grass, sand and gravel/pebbles which we found by the river. Then we took the cap off the top of the bottle and covered the hole with a piece of material and tied it with an elastic band. Next we filled the bottom half of the bottle with the river water and quickly poured it through the layers we put in the other half. The water filtered through the layers and we caught it in the bottle as it dripped through. We poured our water through the filter three times before it was clean enough to drink. My water was fresh with an earthy taste! Benjamin Dippnall, Grade 5S

Water Filter Mr Lehy said that we were going to make water filter and we could only use the things at the river. The only thing you had to bring was a plastic bottle. Then we went along the rail way to get to the stream and were told that you didn’t need to follow the water filter instructions so I did not. The things I used were: charcoal, grass, pebbles. First I added charcoal then a layer of grass and compacted it. Then I added pebbles and more grass, and last but not least another layer of charcoal. I like my water filter but I’m not drinking it. It is yellowish. I would like to do another thing like this. Ethan Kropf, Grade 5B

There has been a definite increase in communication around the water crisis and the impending Day Zero. The call for the Western Cape Community to come together and reduce their water footprint is vital! Rory Malcolm will be communicating with the Wider Bridge House community on the measures Bridge House has implemented to reduce consumption, with information around ‘the next steps’ in the process. It is important to note that as a school we will do our utmost to ensure that disruption to the learning programme is limited while in this crisis. On that note, we do have a number of additional events taking place over the next few days. On Saturday, our Prep Choir and Marimba Workshop takes place and on Sunday, the Bridge House Mile will be swum. Our best goes out to all those taking part in this event. Next week is also a big week for our athletes as they take on Somerset House and Somerset College in the annual Triangular Athletics event. With Bridge House hosting this year’s Triangular, we will be tackling the event with a “Can Do” attitude in an attempt to win back the cup! I was fortunate to attend the College Grade 8 to Grade 11 Awards Ceremony last night. It always is uplifting to see past prep pupils, as well as pupils new to Bridge House, ensuring that they have put in the required effort to excel.

In Barrow’s Barrow, the need for a collective effort regarding water conservation is at the forefront of my awareness, so I thought I would include a quote relevant to this topic.

The weekend is upon us, do your bit to SAVE WATER!

We are well in the swing of our extra-mural programme, albeit a logistical challenge in these drought conditions. Monday sees our first opportunity to access the pool this year, and our swimmers are keen to get underway after a few land-training sessions. Many thanks to Mr Malcolm for all his effort in securing viable water solutions for the school. We are mindful that the swimming pool will almost inevitably become a reservoir of some sort in the near future, though we are grateful to be able to swim until then. The JP, Inter-house & Sprint galas will continue as planned. We have made a decision, due to the larger number of swimmers required and expected spectator numbers, that we will not be hosting the Relay gala, originally scheduled for 2 March. Our cricketers are underway with regard to fixtures, and some pleasing results have come in thus far. Cricket is yet another sport that is expected to be affected by the drought. The use of the turf wicket will be restricted to touring teams, and to those games whereby no other option or venue is available. Unfortunately the severe conditions are beginning to affect the outfield, and a further decision may be needed in the near future. Our athletes have been hard at training in preparation for the Triangular event. We wish them all the best for this challenge. Our tennis players have been preparing well for the local fixtures. The league has a slightly late start, but the extra preparation time will hopefully see our team players putting up a great fight against some strong opposition. Functional fitness has also proved popular. This is certainly no easy ride, and the children have been put through their paces during these sessions. It has been very pleasing to see the enthusiasm towards the cultural aspects of the timetable. Sessions have been well supported, and children are pleased to have a variety on offer in the afternons. Finally, we wish all our Bridge House Mile entrants the very best of luck for their swim on Sunday. We look forward to this wonderful event, and thank all those involved in its continued success. All the best for a fantastic sporting and cultural week ahead.

Cricket T20: Bridge House U12 versus PC Pietersen at Groot Drakenstein Bridge House lost the toss and PC Pietersen elected to bowl first. Our batsmen put on an impressive total of 128 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. There was a lot of pressure on our batsmen, as tournament rules state that a batsman must declare after he has faced 12 balls. You can, however, come back in after all the wickets have fallen. A few not outs included Reuben Sendzul, Daniel de Jongh and Sasha Smith. In the second innings we had to defend the total of a 128 and the boys had a very tight field placement, complemented by even tighter bowling. We saw some good bowling from Jean Weber, Chad Swanepoel and Chad Ayford, and excellent bowling work from William Barclay-Loggie who very narrowly missed out on his hat trick. PC Pietersen showed great cricket by batting out all 20 overs and putting our boys under pressure. The match was played in a great spirit with the main purpose being to learn more about the game. For some of the PC Pietersen boys it was their first formal cricket match, and it was wonderful to see how our boys stepped in and helped them with the game, by giving advice and even helping with something as basic as fastening a strap. Well done, boys!

U13A vs Pniel Primary Our U13A boys played their first league match for the 2018 season against a strong Pniel Primary U13 team. Pniel won the toss and elected to bat first and scored 111 runs in their 20 overs. It is also the first time that some our Gr 6 players joined the U13A team. Bridge House did well in a nail-biting match and won by 7 wickets with a good opening partnership by Jake Downie (26 runs) and Chad Ayford (50 runs). Well done, boys!
