The annual Triangular event, hosted by Bridge House this year, was a wonderful afternoon of athletic competition, personal excellence, and sportsmanship. Somerset College and Somerset House brought with them teams of talented young athletes, and the competition was expected to be close. This was certainly the case, with the overall lead changing hands regularly through the day. Twenty two new records were set on the day – an outstanding achievement. In the end Bridge House finished in top spot! Well done to each and every athlete who competed on the day. You have all shown great commitment in your preparation for the event, and wonderful Bridge House Pride on the day. Thanks must go out to all our athletics coaches, the staff officials on the day from the three schools, our supporters, and to all those behind-the-scenes folk who assisted with the set-up and catering for the day. Your contribution to the success of the event is greatly appreciated. Allan Wells

We are showering you with love in Grade 00… The Grade 00 classes have been having fun learning about the heart shape this week. Arts and crafts themes this week have focused on health, safety and Valentine’s Day.

Weekend activities for Erica and Huguenot Boarders The Huguenot Boarders were in for an action-packed, fun and enjoyable weekend. Firstly, after supper on Friday night, we left Bridge House in the Quantum: destination? Unknown to the boarders. We stopped off for some essential snacks and ice-cream before heading to our final point. We drove up to the Franschhoek pass to see the sunset. Unfortunately it was cloudy, however this did not stop us having a great time. Once we arrived back at Bridge House, we went for a night swim in the swimming pool. This was incredible fun, playing water polo as well as successfully managing to create a 3 man tower! On Saturday Huguenot and Erica Boarders went to the Ice Rink in Goodwood. For some boarders, it was their first time skating on the ice, and for some of the adults, it brought out the inner-kid in them all over again! When we got back, we were shown a masterclass in how to play rugby by the mighty, victorious England before watching a movie to end the night. On Sunday the boarders enjoyed a swim in the pool playing games, as well as some well needed relaxation time before the week started. Thank you to the house parents Mrs le Roux, Mr Sutcliffe and Mr Lawrie for arranging these activities.

Saturday, 10 February Central Boland We took 22 athletes through to Dal Josaphat for the Central Boland Athletics Championships last week Saturday. The athletes had a brilliant day on the track, as well as on the field. We would like to congratulate all the athletes who took part. A record number of nine athletes have made it through to the Boland Athletics Championships on Saturday, 17 February. Good luck to the following athletes:  Skye Fox U10 80m  Georgia Curd U12 High Jump  Nicole Viljoen U12 1200m  Isobel Moore U13 Shotput & 200m  Isabella Lundie U13 1500m & 800m  Olivia Louw U13 75mH & 200mH  Harry Morgan U10 Long Jump  Nicholas Roux U10 High Jump  William Moore U11 Shotput Cricket -U13B vs Eikestad Primary BH batted first and were bowled out for 72 runs. Tristan Harley scored a quick 14 runs. Eikestad passed our score for the loss of 5 wickets, thereby beating us by 5 wickets. Sebastian Phillips managed to get 2 wickets in 2 balls!! U13B vs Rhenish Primary Rhenish won the toss and elected to bat. Our bowlers struggled against a strong batting line up and Rhenish scored 114/5 in their 20 overs. Our boys managed to bat out their 20 overs, but came up 52 runs short of the target. U11A cricket vs Rhenish Bridge House won the toss and batted first. Justin Mills and Keyan Hill were put in to open for the first time and did the team proud by putting on 73 (70) for the first wicket. Harry Morgan came in at 3 after Hill was dismissed for an excellent 48 (54). Harry Morgan was 23 (24) not out as Bridge House posted an above-par 138-4 in 20 overs. Another new bowling combination of Caleb Harley and Harry Morgan helped to restrict Rhenish to 16-7 inside 7 overs. Despite some fortune for the batting team, their luck soon ran out and Rhenish were 46 all out. Harley finishing with figures of 3.3-1-14-5. Congratulations to Bridge House on an emphatic 93 run win. I look forward to seeing this young team grow from strength to strength. Amadoda, Bridge House. Manne, Bridge House.

U13A vs Eikestad Primary Our boys were very excited to play against one of our biggest competitors, Eikestad Prep in Stellenbosch. We won the toss and elected to take the bat. Our boys managed to score 122 runs after 20 for the loss of 5 wickets. Sebastian Griffith scored 37, and Zach de Kock 13*, other honourable mentions are Chad Ayford with 14 and Joey Baylett with 7*. Eikestad had a big Bridge House mountain to climb! The BH boys did not manage to take a lot of wickets but managed to keep the run rate very low. Eikestad only managed to score 97 runs after 20 over for the loss of 4 wickets. Wickets were taken by Joey Baylett, Joshua de Jongh and Tristen Douwer. U13A vs Primrose (UK) The boys were very excited to play their annual game against the boys from Primrose, England at the beautiful fields of Distell in Stellenbosch. We won the toss and elected to take the bat. The Bridge House boys managed to score a record total of 174 for the loss of 4 with Sebastian Griffith scoring 54*. Other honourable mentions are Zach de Kock with a 25 and Joey Baylett with 15* Primrose had a big task in hand. Thanks to very tight bowling from the BH boys, Primrose only managed to score 104 after 25 over for the loss of 5 wickets. Wickets were taken by Tristan Dower, Chad Swanepoel and Sebastian Phillips. The BH boys have really worked hard for this and it proves that with hard work, you will get results. It has been two big wins for us as the last league match we played was against Eikestad Prep and our BH boys took the win there as well. 13A/B vs Bedford Prep (UK) Our U13A and B boys played against played against Bedford Prep and unfortunately both our teams lost their matches. 1. U13A boys lost the toss and Bedford elected to bat and scored 149 runs in 20 overs, with Joshua de Jongh as Bridge House’s best bowler (4 wickets for 28 runs). Bridge House came in to bat and were bowled out for 90 runs. We lost by 59 runs. Jake Downie scored 25 runs.

2. U13B, Bedford Prep batted first and set a massive score of 166 runs. Bridge House U13B managed to score only 91 runs, with Jean Weber as the best batman.

U13A vs Dulwich Prep (UK) Bridge House won the toss and elected to bat and managed to score 93 runs in their 20 overs (Jake Downie 26 runs, Sebastien Griffiths 27 and Chad Ayford 20). Our bowlers did an excellent job with the ball and at the end took a cool lead to finish the job by bowling out the opponents. Well done to the Bridge House team for playing much-matured, quality cricket over the past few matches. Proudly Bridge House U13A Team.

OF THE WEEK

Bridge house Holiday You are reminded that tomorrow, Friday 16 February is a Bridge House holiday and boarders’ out weekend.

Visiting Ex Head

Allan Graham, Head of Bridge House from 1997 to 2002, and his wife Dal who taught in the Prep School, visited us from the UK where they now live. As the Founder Head of Oakhill in Knysna, Allan was involved with Bridge House as a consultant even before being appointed Head. How wonderful it was to reminisce with them about our school's incredible journey from 19 January, 1995 with 54 pupils housed in an unused state school building in Simondium, to 2018 and our magnificent 28 hectare campus and world class independent school.

Bread Tags and Bottle Tops – please don’t stop collecting This week, thousands and thousands of bottle tops and bread tags collected by the Bridge House community, were loaded up and transported to the Bread Tags for Wheelchairs organisation. We are very excited that in exchange for this collection we will soon be able to hand over a wheelchair to a needy recipient in the community. Well done to Christiaan Cloete who launched the idea at school, to Mr Dave Fuller who put so much time and energy into the project and to every one of our students and parents who steadfastly collected the tags and tops. Onward, and upward we go - please don’t stop collecting. There is no limit to the number of wheelchairs we can earn and at the same time save the planet from this plastic waste.

On the subject of saving the planet, please say no to straws! We encourage you to join the worldwide movement to eradicate the billions of plastic straws being trashed annually. “A small straw may not seem like a big problem, but when we look at our reliance on this petroleum based, single-use item, on a global scale it becomes very apparent that this unnecessary habit poses a huge threat to the health of our planet” – Straw Wars. Plastic straws have been found in the nostrils and stomachs of animals and birds and in unsightly piles of pollution. At Bridge House, straws blow around and become buried in the soil. In the interests of saving our environment and making Bridge House a cleaner place to be, we ask you to take part in the #NoStrawChallenge.

60 Minutes with the Heads – Monday 26 February Note that this Monday 19 February is the final day for submitting agenda items. In the interests of good and improving communication between school and parents, Mike Russell and Marc Barrow, Heads of the College and Prep respectively, will host the termly 60 Minutes with the Heads meeting, on Monday 26 February in the Learning Commons from 08h00 to 09h00. In order to help the Heads prepare properly for this, please e-mail any questions or concerns (of a general nature) you may have, to [email protected] by or on Monday 19 February. The PA has kindly offered to bundle these into a folder and forward them to the Heads, who will then prepare responses to the matters raised, and e-mail out the agenda. Parents interested in these agenda items will be welcome to come along and participate in the conversation. Please note that any issues mailed to PA@bridgehouse after that closing date will not be on the agenda for this meeting, and will either be replied to in the interim, or carried over to the next 60 Minutes in the third term. The rules for 60 Minutes are simple:      

it's a constructive and collaborative initiative; matters raised and mailed through need to be of a general nature; if deemed a better option to do so, the Heads can respond directly by e-mail to any issues before the meeting; there will be honest and frank responses and discussion around the topics on the agenda; questions from the floor need to be only about the agenda issues: no "surprises" and no "general" please! giving the Heads some preparation time is simply so that if figures and data are required for an answer, or if someone else's expertise is needed, there is an opportunity to gather this and give full answers (and perhaps put it into a presentation of sorts); time: strictly 60 minutes for the forum, so that it's short and sharp and those attending can plan their morning.

Mr Mike Russell
