New Flowflake floor delivers high-end marbled aesthetic

A

new decorative flooring system has been introduced by Flowcrete Asia to provide commercial environments with a surface that combines a multi-tonal marbled appearance with the hard-wearing and practical properties of resin. Flowcrete Asia understands that developers of venues such as hotels, casinos, restaurants and shopping centres need to simultaneously combine the functional considerations of a busy location with eye-catching aesthetics that enhance the customer experience. This is especially true of the flooring system, as on average the floor makes up one-sixth of a facilities’ entire surface, meaning that it is important to realise the full potential of this aspect of the building. Flowcrete Asia has added Flowflake Marble to its Flowflake range of decorative coatings to help developers make the most of the floor area. This new system is able to add both texture and vibrancy to a space by incorporating coloured flakes of varying sizes within a pigmented epoxy base coat. This attractive appearance is then protected for the long-term with tough and resistant clear sealers. Flowflake marble is available in six different flake and colour combinations to create effects that range from the sleek veneer of a dappled black and grey coating to the lightest option which intricately intermingles copper and sand tones. This variety and design flexibility provides designers and architects with a versatile flooring solution with which to develop a first-rate visitor experience.

Southeast Asia Building NOV-DEC 2014

The robust and abrasion resistant nature of an epoxy floor ensures that a Flowflake system will be able to retain its attractive, seamless and colourful finish for an extended period of time, despite the heavy and continuous footfall that it will undergo in a commercial environment. The chemical resistance of these floors means that they will also be able to withstand the daily use of corrosive cleaning chemicals as well as the unavoidable spillages of drinks, that could erode insufficiently robust flooring systems over time. This long-lasting durability helps to keep the floor finish looking as good as the day the facility opened whilst also minimising maintenance costs over its lifetime by reducing the need for frequent repairs or an early refurbishment. The epoxy make-up of the Flowflake systems means that they are perfect for creating seamless, impermeable and easy-to-clean surfaces. This is a particular benefit within sites where hygiene is a top priority, such as restaurants or hospitals, as the floor won’t harbour unwanted contaminants and will instead facilitate their quick and easy removal from the area. The durability and strength of Flowcrete Asia’s floors avoids cracks and gaps from spoiling this seamless and sanitary finish. The other systems in this range include Flowflake Terrosso and Flowflake Kristalina. The Terrosso option has a different mix of flake shapes, sizes and colours thatgives a more cohesive overall aesthetic in comparison to the swirling tones of the Marble system. The tight mix of small and bright flakes used in a Flowflake Kristalina finish makes it ideal for creating a shimmering and smooth surface that adds vibrancy and colour to an environment.

Hotels

INTERIOR

Existing facilities that want to breathe new life into a space with a flooring refurbishment can capitalise on the fact that a Flowflake floor can be laid on top of hard surfaces such as marble, tile or terrazzo. The new layer chemically fuses to the previous floor creating a monolithic system that will not delaminate. This means that floors can be upgraded with a fraction of the cost, time and disruption that it would take to uplift and then replace an entire floor. Selecting and installing a decorative floor is a complex process that starts during design and affects the building throughout its lifetime. Each day, walking through the building, the owner, staff, customers and visitors will see the floor surfaces and the results of choices made even before construction began. Flowcrete Asia has built long-lasting functionality and attractive aesthetics into its Flowflake range from the very start so that designers and developers can rest assured that the floor they install will continue to look exceptional and meet the site’s practical needs even after rigorous and prolonged use. Pentair Intelliflo Variable Speed Pump – A revolution for energy saving in the hospitality industry

W

hen discussing pool equipment in the construction, renovation or repair of your recreational water components, the focus generally will turn to the pumps since they are the primary consumer of energy in the filtration system. Using a well-designed “variable speed pump” can reduce the energy used or consumed by up to 90 percent. Why? Historically, pool pumps with induction motors that run at only one or two speeds have drawn more energy than is required to circulate pool water. That is because a pump that can run at only one speed must use a powerful enough speed to do the pump’s most demanding job (for example, running a waterfall or pool cleaner). However, it takes far less power to simply keep water filtered – a difference single-speed pumps cannot address. Most variable-speed pumps can be programmed to operate at set speeds to deliver the correct flow for each task they perform, such Pentair Intelliflo Variable Speed Pump. Photo: © Pentair Aquatic Systems as operating a suction-side pool cleaner, waterfalls or spa jets. Some pumps have built-in constant-flow software, which maximises the advantages of variable-speed technology; constant-flow pumps automatically adjust their speed and deliver the required flow for each programmed task. Therefore, when Pentair® first introduced IntelliFlo variable speed technology, it set off a marketplace revolution with its energy efficiency, near-silent operation and long service life. Check out these advantages and you’ll quickly see why: Features - ENERGY STAR® Certified: meets strict energy efficiency criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. - Energy savings up to 90 percent versus traditional pumps* - 8 programmable speed settings and built-in timer to ensure the pump runs at optimum speed and duration - Ultra-efficient permanent magnet motor design reduces noise and vibration for greater efficiency and longer pump life - Dramatically quieter operation - as low as 45 decibels - about 4 times quieter than most traditional-style pumps.** - Totally enclosed fan-cooled ( TEFC) design and low average operating speed makes IntelliFlo the quietest pump on earth - Built in diagnostics protect the pump for longer service life *Savings based on variable speed pump compared to a single-speed pump running 12 hours per day at an average of US$0.16 per kWh in a 75,700 litres pool. Actual savings may vary based on local utility rates, pool size, pump run time, pump horsepower, pump rpm, plumbing size and length, pump model, service factor and other hydraulic factors. ** Compared to noise level of typical 1.5 hp single-speed pump.

And the revolution toward a more eco-friendly and sustainable pool industry continues! The Eco Select brand identifies our most eco-friendly products and equipment that takes advantage of industry-leading innovation to save energy, conserve water, reduce noise, or otherwise contribute to a more environmentally responsible pool equipment system. When you choose the Eco Select brand, you can be confident that your pool will provide peak performance and maximum energy savings, plus reliability, convenience and streamlined maintenance. S

tanding at approximately 19-metre high and 110-metre wide, the 2,125-square metre green wall (equivalent to eight tennis courts) at Ocean Financial Centre had achieved the Guinness World Record for the Largest Vertical Garden on 13 September 2013. It is an eco-breakthrough, which has placed Singapore on the world map of sustainability. Ocean Financial Centre is one of the largest and premium office buildings in Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD). Developed by Keppel Land and designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, the building has received the Building and Construction Authority’s Green Mark Platinum Award, the first and highest Green Mark awarded to any office building in the Central Business District. Keppel Land had planted the vertical garden at the public plaza of the building, in line with the National Parks’ vision to create a City in a Garden. Close to 57,000 pots of plants make up the map of Singapore, Southeast Asia and the World on the wall. The wall is further enhanced with a 3-Dimensional effect with different growth protrusion of 25 sustainable plant species. Safety considerations were kept in mind when designing the green wall to provide easy accessibility for maintenance. Proprietary designs were adopted to secure the pots of plants while an automatic irrigation and fertilisation system was incorporated to ensure that minimal maintenance is needed for the green wall. This vertical greenery not only helps to reduce the surface temperature of the car park, as well as provide a green lung in filtering out vehicular emissions, and visual relief from the dense concrete Central Business District. Ocean Financial Centre also incorporates some of the latest in green technology such as a 400 square metres solar panel

system installed at its roof, a hybrid chiller system as well as a paper recycling system which helps save more than 5,600 trees annually. There are also four levels of sky gardens, occupying a total green plot area of approximately 15,000 square metres. Through these green features, Ocean Financial Centre is able to achieve an overall energy savings of 35 percent. Ocean Financial Centre is a landmark Grade A office building owned by Keppel REIT. Developed by Keppel Land, Phase 1 of Ocean Financial Centre was completed in March 2011 and Phase 2, which includes the carpark and retail podium, was completed in September 2013. Ocean Financial Centre continues to lead in architectural and building excellence. According to Keppel Land, it is the first high-rise office development in Southeast Asia to be conferred the prestigious Platinum Level LEED-CS pre-certification under the US Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

Vertical garden at Dunman High gets top marks A joint collaboration between Ver tical Green Pte Ltd and students & teachers of Dunman High School in Singapore resulted in a stunning 58 square metres green wall in the school premises.

L

ocated at 10 Tanjong Rhu Road, Dunman High School is one of the top secondary schools in Singapore, both in the academic domain as well as in holistic development of students. In 2013, the teachers and some students undertook a project to study the effects of vertical gardening on surface temperature and plant species. They decided to carry out vertical gardening on the school’s staircase concrete façade wall to compare the surface temperature of the vertical garden with the surface of the vertical wall without the garden. Vertical Green Pte Ltd, a leading landscape consultant company specialising in design and installation for vertical garden, got involved in the project to provide a suitable solution to the school. The staff of Vertical Green met up with the students and explained the choice of plant species that were suitable for the wall. Due to the differences in sunlight exposure and moisture retention, different species of plants were required for the different parts of the vertical wall.

58

Southeast Asia Building NOV-DEC 2014

“The students studied a wide range of plants and proposed the plant species layout as well as the overall design of the vertical garden. We then reviewed and recommended some changes in relation to positioning and using plant species of lower maintenance requirement,” said Mr Darren, Director of Vertical Green Pte Ltd. After the teachers approved the design, Vertical Green started installing the vertical garden system on the wall. “The students helped out during the planting phase of this project, and they got to understand on the process of planting onto the vertical garden, and had hands on experience on the planting process,” said Mr Darren. The felt panel system consists of two layers of felt geotextile, and anchored onto an UV resistant synthetic board with stainless steel bolts. This panel has an overall thickness of less than 2.5cm, which makes it one of the thinnest vertical garden systems in Singapore.  The panels are hooked onto the customised stainless steel

Creating a beautiful floor To get a beautiful wooden surface, it is necessary to treat the floor correctly from its foundation. After sanding and before using a coating, a primer should be applied. Primers determine the colouration of the wood while reducing the risk of sidebonding due to their flexibility. Before applying a primer, you also need to decide if you want to change the look of the floor by applying a stain. Once the floor has been stained/ primed, choose a topcoat based on your requirements.

Architectural finish to perfection achieved with MEVA Rental Formwork Clinic for geriatric psychiatry on Lake Constance, Germany Flooded by daylight and with a generous design: The new clinic for geriatric psychiatry will start operation in May 2015. Photo: © huber staudt architekten dba, Berlin

A

new geriatric clinic is being built for € 14.7 million on the sweeping grounds of the psychiatric centre in Reichenau on Lake Constance. It will house aged psychiatric patients and start operation in May 2015. Contractor Kurt Motz did the earthworks and poured the complete building shell from June 2013 to May 2014. The new clinic is characterised by its generous design and rooms that are flooded by daylight. All patient and most other rooms have large windows with a park view. The 4-storey terrace house consists of 3 units that are all grouped around atriums. A terrace on the first floor invites patients to sit outside while the roof garden on the 2nd floor offers a splendid view of Lake Constance.

MEVA rental formwork delivers exceptional concrete finish The walls of all public areas – reception hall, three staircases, roof garden and most hallways – were poured with an exceptionally smooth architectural finish. All other walls have a normal concrete finish and the walls of the patient rooms were made with sand-lime brick for noise protection. Contractor Kurt Motz rented 520 square metres of the Mammut 350 wall formwork to pour the building and retaining walls and columns. The walls were poured with 3.50 metres by 2.50 metres Mammut 350 panels without height extensions. Pours were done in cycles up to 15 metres wide. Smaller panels were used for length compensations, columns and beams. The architectural finish was achieved with rental panels that were specially upgraded by MEVA for this purpose.

PROJECT DATA Project: Building a geriatric psychiatry clinic with 56 beds in 38 single and double rooms with 6,335 square metres of building area and 3,444 square metres floor space Building owner: “Zentrum für Psychiatrie” ZfP (psychiatric centre) in Reichenau on Lake Constance Architects and site engineers: - huber staudt architekten bda, Berlin - Baulinie Architekten, Ravensburg, Southern Germany Contractor: Kurt Motz, Illertissen, Southern Germany MEVA System: Wall formwork Mammut 350 with regenerated panels to achieve a top architectural concrete Formwork engineering: MEVA Formwork Systems, Germany, Stuttgart branch

Delighted with the alkus all-plastic facing This job was the second in a row for which contractor Kurt Motz used MEVA formwork. It was the superior finish achieved with the all-plastic facing that persuaded Motz to switch to MEVA formwork. The facing’s quality and its flush fit in the panel frame are an added plus, especially when aiming for an immaculate architectural concrete finish. Foreman Bernd Sauter also praised the alkus repair kit that allows him to repair minor damages to the facing on site, without losing time.

RentalPlus service agreement saves time and money As with the previous job when using MEVA formwork for the first time, Motz opted for a RentalPlus service agreement, which covers all efforts and costs that occur after the formwork is returned. The contractor saves rental costs and time for cleaning and repair. This is covered by RentalPlus. For more information, visit www.meva-international.com.

3D Printed Canal House in Amsterdam A 3D Printed Canal House, a revolution in architecture, is being printed in Amsterdam, where an international team of partners collaborates in ‘research & doing’ linking science, design, construction and community, at an expo-site in the very heart of the city.

T

he 3D Print Canal House is a building site where ‘live’ research is being done on 3D printing through the building a full size 3D printed canal house. The site was opened March 1st by unveiling a large 2x2x3 metre 3D printed building block. Every week new large 3D prints are added to the house. The special building site is open to the public, so it also is the youngest museum in Amsterdam.

“What if we can 3D Print Buildings?” This was the question that Amsterdam based architecture office DUS asked themselves in 2011 and what led to the ongoing betapreneurial project that aims to revolutionise the building industry and offer solutions for a better planet: “1. Waste material (plastics) could be recycled into printable materials. 2. Transport costs would be significantly reduced, as only raw materials are distributed. 3. There’s no waste, as one only 3D-prints with the material needed 4. One can 3D print complex and tailormade architecture at less cost and conquer mass production

5. 3D printers could be used around the globe to print local solutions such as emergency shelter, homes from recycled plastics in slums, disasters etc. 6. A global community can share digital files and offer solutions to a local context, and vice versa” these ideas led DUS to design and build the KamerMaker, the World’s first portable large scale 3D Printer, and marked the start of the 3D Print Canal House project.

3D Print Canal House is printed room-by-room with the KamerMaker (RoomMaker) The Canal House is printed with the KamerMaker (literally: RoomMaker), a large portable 3D printer developed by DUS architects that can print entire interiors or building blocks measuring up to 2 x 2 x 3.5 metre. The design of the house consists of different rooms that each are printed separately on site before being assembled into one house. This way the rooms can be carefully tested in a safe and easy accessible manner. Each room consists of several printed parts, which are joined together. The design of the 3D Print Canal House can be seen at the expo-site in several 3D printed scale models, and exactly the same digital files are being used to 3D print the house scale 1:1.

Building site, museum and research facility “The 3D Print Canal House is a unique project because it is a building site, a museum and a research facility in one,” said Hans Vermeulen of DUS architects, initiator of the project. “By 3D printing the first building block we celebrate the start of researching the possibilities of digital fabrication for the building industry,” he added.

The research project will take three years. Hedwig Heinsman of DUS said: “We hope that in three years’ time, the excitement of the visitors is still as fresh as today, and that the house has developed into a mature 3D printed building with different rooms, each with different constructions and material properties that all tell something about the time that they were printed. And that the 3D Print Canal House becomes a permanent place for pioneering activities in design and architecture.”

Research & Do: unique collaboration between different industries “Different partners from a diverse range of industries work together on this project, and we learn together by doing,” said Hans Vermeulen of DUS architects. The research develops according to 6 Research & Do themes: 1. KamerMaker: large scale 3D printing 2. Sustainable 3D print material for the building industries 3. New construction and building techniques 4. Downloadable tailor-made architecture 5. Smart building 6. Scripted city planning

The premium partners invest in the project by contributing knowledge and materials. Heijmans researches new building techniques for 3D printing and how this can play a role in client-oriented, tailor-made building. Partner Henkel – one of the world’s largest manufacturers of adhesives and coatings – is working on developing an innovative and sustainable material for 3D printing for the building industry. The municipality of Amsterdam researches what effect the digital maker industry has on the job market and building regulations, and the partners of Amsterdam Smart City investigate how the printing process can be made more intelligent. DOEN Foundation and The Amsterdam Art Fund support the expo-terrain because it links design, culture and technique and thereby instigates innovation. “All partners show courage, because we do not exactly know the final outcome, we are learning by doing and sharing.”

Opening weekend big success Over 1,000 enthusiastic guests visited the building site in the first week. Especially the ‘KamerMaker’, the big 3D printer, and the first large 3D printed building block evoked surprised reactions from visitors: “Look, that is the same print, but then really big!”

Austrian Embassy Jakarta Schueco South East Asia delivers solutions to meet the sustainable design for Austrian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia.

I

n building its new Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Austrian Foreign Ministry was looking for a highly sustainable design. In addition to Jak ar ta being exceptionally hot and humid, which drives up energy usage, the area around the Austrian Embassy also has a high level of ambient noise. The design would need to offer solutions to each of these challenges. Austrian firm POS Sustainable Architecture, which led the design of the Embassy, tapped Schueco as its partner and product of choice, to help address these issues. “Knowing Austria is a world leader on sustainability issues – and that their new Jakarta Embassy would be no different – Schueco was proud to play an important role in bringing their environmental priorities to life on this project,” said Mr Andreas Geyer, Managing Director for Schueco Southeast Asia. By installing Schueco’s highly insulated windows and doors, the design achieved two objectives: creating a cool, comfortable indoor climate – at a fraction of the energy consumption; and a significant reduction in ambient noise in the immediate area near the Embassy. In addition, an extensive and stylish shading system - made from local timber – shaded all openings, serving to further cool the structure. Rounding out the ecominded design, POS also included concrete-core activation for cooling, rooftop photovoltaics, and a rainwater collection system. Amongst other positive environmental effects, Schueco’s integration helped to achieve a reduction of building-related energy consumption from a calculated 110kVa to approximately 60kVa – roughly 85 percent less than the average office building in Jakarta. All of which has led to a unique distinction, with the Austrian Jakarta Embassy becoming the first building to be accredited to the Indonesian Building Certification System GBCI according to Ministerial Regulation No.8/2010. “Ultimately, we see this project as a classic example of the teamwork that sustainability requires: the vision and values of the Austrian Embassy, the innovative design of POS Sustainable Architecture, and the Mr Andreas Geyer, Managing for Schueco backing of Schueco’s high-quality systems – designed for optimal results, and to last for years to come,” Director Southeast Asia. added Mr Geyer. “Most importantly, the Austrian Embassy now has a cool, quiet oasis in the heart of Jakarta – delivered with the utmost efficiency,” concluded Mr Geyer. ithin the parameter of a master plan of the University of Cologne with an investment volume of 1.3 billion Euro the new building “Study Service Centre” (SSC) is finalised. Wi t h t h e i r a p p l i c at i o n “ S c h u s te r architects” from Düsseldorf won in 2004 the competition “construction Südhof ”. For round about 40 million Euros on a ground plan of approximately 90 metres x 80 metres they developed a modern building with two different modes of façades. While the façades face road traffic integrates smoothly and constantly in the historical main building, the back side and courtyard appear totally different. In heights and depths irregular positioned corbels are dominating. The so arising cubes in connection with the flashy green window frames build a very special eye-catcher, which reminds of an oversized 3D Tetris. When using a ventilated undercut attachment as an energy saving façade© the demanded low energy status of this building will easily be fulfilled. The largescale fibreC façade panels of the company Rieder Faserbeton-Elemente GmbH in Kolbermoor had been mounted fast, simply and safe by means of undercut anchors of the company KEIL Befestigungstechnik GmbH on the thermally uncoupled under construction of the company BWM Dübel and Montagetechnik GmbH, Leinfelden.

The installation of the façade panels were executed by the company Jäger Ausbau GmbH. On basis of the European Technical Approval ETA-06/0220 the mounting of the façade panels were executed with the KEIL undercut anchors KH. More than 40,000 anchors have been set and assure a save hold so that the fibre glass panels will brave the elements wind and weather. Also the soffits had been mounted with undercut anchors according to approvals. systems based on undercut technology. Based on the company’s own research and patents, the company offers architects and façade builders the opportunity of attaching façade panels from the rear and thus avoiding attachment points on the front, which distract visually. Numerous economic benefits with regard to long life and installation have resulted in KEIL’s attachment technology becoming the preferred fixing system for façade panels for an increasing number of construction projects. Power Reliability & Electrical Distribution

CLEAN ENERGY - A solution to protect sensitive buildings

L

ow voltage electrical distribution in commercial buildings is subjected to increasing disturbances from internal or external stress. Switched-mode power supplies, CFL lamps, inverters are generating harmonic distortions in voltage and current. Radio transmission, change-over switches or lightning can create HF disturbances. Different operations on low voltage power supply, like disconnection or contactor switching, can cause transient over-voltages. All the disturbances present a risk affecting the operation of electronic equipment: damage, premature ageing, dysfunctions (program errors, transmission errors) or unwanted tripping of earth-fault protection devices. Modern buildings require efficient protection for electronic equipment and immunity for communication networks, automatic control and data processing applications.

Clean Energy solution by Hager Clean Energy solution by Hager has been developed to solve Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) issues for sensitive buildings. Other solutions available today are only acting on the wave shape of current drawn by the load. Clean Energy solution by Hager is providing efficient protection from harmonics and disturbances circulating between the electrical distribution in the building and its ground and earthing system – which makes it unique in the market place! This solution has been designed to transform any electrical distribution network in a TN earthing system, which will protect the network from unwanted tripping of earth-fault protection and from indirect lightning effects. The stress-level for sensitive buildings is related to the electrical devices inside and to the surrounding environment, and is therefore time-varying. The environment may generate disturbances that will enter the building through the power supply or through the earthing system. For that reason, Clean Energy is a solution to protect the complete building permanently. With only three kinds of devices – hardening filters, capacitors and bar filters, combined with a structured connection to the ground and earthing system, this is a simple solution to be integrated in the conventional switchboards and distribution boards. Easy commissioning and even compatible with existing electrical distribution, Hager is offering a global and competitive solution to protect permanently the complete building from internal and external disturbances.

Emerson Network Power’s new ASCO ® Power Quality Analytics increases reliability, efficiency and facilitates compliance

Continuous, high-speed wave form recording identifies eight power quality anomalies.

E

merson Network Power, a business of Emerson and a global leader in maximising availability, capacity and efficiency of critical infrastructure, debuts new ASCO® Power Quality Analytics for Critical Power Management Systems (CPMS) that measurably increases on-site power reliability and efficiency, and facilitates regulatory compliance.   “Power quality analysis is very different than traditional monitoring and analytics,” said David Iskandar, director of power quality for Emerson’s ASCO Power business. “It’s similar to EKG monitoring equipment for the heart. It enables a facility to compare current operating parameters against manufacturer’s baseline to identify any anomalies or degradations that could cause inefficient operation or even failure. Emerson Network Power’s new ASCO® Power Quality Analytics. This tool helps diagnose problems by reviewing stored, continuously recorded waveforms, without waiting for the event to recur. Proactively solving the problem this way helps the system pay for itself by minimising facility risk and equipment failures, and increasing operating efficiency.”   Continuous, high-speed wave form recording of power quality identifies eight anomalies, such as power outages, transient harmonics, sags and swells, cycle by cycle in milliseconds. Cycle-by-cycle  monitoring provides the electrical sensitivity required for facility managers to know exactly what went wrong and where in the electrical system. ASCO Power Quality Analytics facilitates post-event troubleshooting by displaying wave forms from multiple power quality meters across a facility on a single screen. This makes it easier for facility managers to analyse and diagnose events.   Continuous, high-speed wave form recording also enables facility managers to conduct pre-function testing of equipment, components and cabling to determine their responses to simulated transients and other events. This produces a baseline that can be compared to equipment and component performance over time. In turn, these accurate historical records show performance trends that can enhance preventive maintenance programmes, predict future power requirements, and generally make a facility’s power infrastructure more reliable and efficient. ASCO Power Quality Analytics helps facility managers comply with a range of regulatory and utility reporting requirements, such as the National Electrical Code, Joint Commission for healthcare and EN50160 Power Quality Compliance. Reports show numerical and graphical data with a written explanation that interprets the data. In fact, facility managers can use reports produced from revenue-grade power quality meters to cross-check utility billing information.   ASCO Power Quality Analytics software is part of ASCO Critical Power Management Systems, but it can stand alone on a PC or laptop, or integrate with a facility’s existing monitoring system. Because the software constantly monitors and records all wave form data automatically, facility managers do not need to programme it. It is virtually plug and play and point and click.    For more information, visit www.EmersonNetworkPower.com/ASCO.

SHOW REVIEW

BEX Asia 2014

SGL Singapore Pte Ltd SGL Singapore Pte Ltd, marketing and selling the ECOPHIT® products of SGL Lindner GmbH & Co. KG in Singapore, introduced its innovative graphite-based ECOPHIT® radiant ceiling at BEX Asia 2014. ECOPHIT® with its innovative graphite components makes air-conditioning technology in buildings more environmentally-friendly. Surface temperature control systems with ECOPHIT® distinguish themselves from standard air conditions thanks to their low energy consumption and healthy interior climate. They also open new possibilities in ceiling use for renovations as well as new construction projects. The performance of this outstanding and energy‐efficient technology can be observed in numerous buildings in Europe and all over the world. The ECOPHIT® radiant ceiling’s principle is as simple as it is effective. A chilled ceiling system is a type of low energy ‐ higher inlet water temperature cooling system that uses radiant cooling SGL Singapore showcased the ECOPHIT® to cool a building space. A chilled ceiling is a ‘drop‐ down’ ceiling comprising of water-carrying SEAMLESS radiant ceiling at its booth. pipes embedded in thin, conductive slabs and e.g. mounted on a metal ceiling plate. Using the ECOPHIT® technology, the conductive slabs are made from carbon delivering a very high level of thermal conductivity and control dynamics. This system cools the occupants in the room through radiation and natural convection using the chilled ceiling as a heat sink for the heat load in the building. Whether in case of seamless ceilings or grid ceilings: Radiant heating or cooling with ECOPHIT® is the right choice when it comes to energy efficiency, additional room height and a degree of flexibility and freedom of design never known before. Mohamed Alami, Managing Director at SGL Lindner said: “ECOPHIT® delivers the right solution with innovative components made from recyclable natural graphite that make air-conditioning in buildings more comfortable, efficient, and environmentally friendly. ECOPHIT® ensures more efficient air conditioning in every type of building, and has proven itself in a variety of large scale projects including office buildings, hotels, public buildings and airports.” A recently conducted feasibility study in Singapore concluded that air-conditioning energy consumption can be reduced by 26 percent using an ECOPHIT® chilled ceiling system instead ECOPHIT® SEAMLESS: Seamless high of a conventional air-conditioning system. In the course of the study, the authors also noted performance radiant ceiling solution made from graphite. (Source: SGL Lindner) that even higher total energy savings of 36 percent could be achieved when back‐end systems are optimised. The study into the energy use and overall effectiveness of Chilled Ceiling technology was carried out by the Energy Research Institute, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The study’s authors collaborated with the Germany‐based SGL Group to install and operate ECOPHIT® chilled ceiling technology at ERI@N’s CleanTech One office space in Singapore. The Energy Research Institute combined energy modelling simulations, with monitoring and analysis of the real parameters of the installations and verification (through sub‐metering), to show how a chilled ceiling system – a form of radiant cooling – achieves significant energy savings when compared to a conventional air‐based system, while maintaining ideal thermal comfort for the building’s occupants. Due to the hot and humid weather conditions in Singapore, air-conditioning is widely used in buildings. The high cooling demands, met by conventional air‐conditioning technology, result in very high energy consumption of buildings. Radiant Cooling technology – and more specifically, a chilled ceiling system, presents a more energy efficient alternative. According to See Chenn Wang, Director Asia at SGL Singapore Pte Ltd, the air-conditioning systems in most buildings in Singapore make up 50 percent of a building’s total electricity consumption. “One of the biggest challenges in achieving energy efficiency in buildings is to create a high indoor comfort level, while reducing the amount of energy consumed by air conditioning. Hence, there is a lot of interest to test innovative and more energy efficient air‐conditioning systems that could replace current technology in Singapore and other tropical regions.” For more information, visit www.ecophit.com.

This is because SecuSan comes with a special surface that immediately suppresses microbial growth on a lasting basis. SecuSan surfaces contain silver ions which are embedded in a carrier system of ceramic glass. They form an active part of this material and prevent the growth of germs such as bacteria, algae and fungi. The silver ions destroy the cell membrane of the germ. This stops respiration and nutrition of the cells, so preventing cell division. Independent tests have proved that SecuSan reduces microbial growth by more than 99 percent. The SecuSan surface remains effective even when cleaned at regular intervals. Its high level of efficacy has been confirmed in independent laboratory and practical tests. “SecuSan handles are highly effective because they can combat germs and protect the users from infections. Thus, they are especially suitable for a densely populated place like Singapore for the use in places which need high levels of hygiene control such as medical and nursing facilities such as hospitals, schools, nurseries, public buildings and care homes,” said Carisa Fey, Regional Sales Manager of Roto Frank Asia-Pacific Pte Ltd. SecuSan handles are entirely maintenance-free and designed for long-term usage. The product comes with a 10-year operational guarantee. For more information, visit http://roto-frank.com.sg.

Modularly expandable by design, a larger capacity can also be achieved by connecting two or more units together. In a bid to ensure water usage stays uninterrupted even during dry spells, VODA is equipped with a back-up system that automatically allows water to flow in from the main water tank when the water level is below 10 flushes. The rainwater conservation tank also has an in-built and self-cleaning filtering system that keeps out leaves, mosquitoes and other vermin. A first flush system can also be added as an extra filtering mechanism. After the successful introduction of Voda, the company has designed two other solutions: Voda 2 and Voda 3. Essentially, Voda 2 and 3 are created using the same low or zero carbon concept and are extension of capabilities and versatility from Voda 1. Voda 2 is a more sophisticated rainwater harvesting system that has an in built and added  filtration system that could expand uses of  rain. At the same time, Voda 2 also has storm management capabilities and doubles as a flood preventive mechanism. And Voda 3 is a system specifically designed for new builds, which aims to harvest a larger capacity of rain (i.e 1,500 litre and above). Given that it also uses the same low carbon concept, it is more cost efficient compared to its peers. VODA is a product of Synergy Contract Sdn Bhd and is available in Malaysia. ACOUSTIC WALL

FANTONI

Mywall is the new product of Fantoni’s Acoustic Panelling division, specialised in the development of sound-absorbing systems, which improve the acoustic quality inside close rooms. It is a modular system comprising panels in three different sizes and numerous types of drilling or milling. The different angles make it possible to create a unique composition, playing on the acoustic performance with the right mix of sound-absorbent and sound-reflecting panels. By inserting suitable lighting behind the panels, or using oblique lighting to create an interplay of shadows, an extra point of aesthetic and design interest is added. Particularly suitable for auditoriums and conference halls, Mywall is ideal for all spaces where long, flat surfaces ask for solutions that create a sense of movement and customise shapes. The perfect solution for architects who want to design ever changing surfaces. The Fantoni Group (company founded by Achille Fantoni in 1882) is a leading manufacturer of office furniture, partition and storage wall systems, MDF (medium density fibreboard) and chipboard panels, melamine flooring and sound-deadening panels.
