TACKLE BOX DAIWA BG, 40 YEARS IN THE MAKING After nearly half a century of reliability, the original Daiwa Black Gold (BG) reel series gets a major overhaul. Introducing the all-new 2016 BG. Daiwa’s newest heavy-duty super reel series is available in sizes 2000 all the way through to 8000, and the performance features start with Daiwa’s Real Four design formula. An amalgamation of Real Engine, Real Control, Real Endurance and Real Custom, Real Four produces spin excellence that is unrivalled in design, performance and quality. BG’s aluminium body and side plate are precision machined, and highly corrosion resistant, making BG perfect for the offshore environment. Rigid, strong and highly durable, the unyielding body supports seamless gear function and prevents twisting when the reel is under load, resulting in greater cranking force. The technologically advanced Digigear system reaps the full protection and strength benefits of the new body. The highly evolved drive system achieves perfect gear meshing and ultra-smooth performance.

The ATD drag system implements structural changes to the spool metal of the reel, providing the spool greater support across the length of the main shaft. This reduces spool twist under load, promoting even wear of the drag washers and reduces “pulsing” of the drag when fighting the fish. Combined with a new improved drag grease that exhibits a low viscosity at rest, yet becomes more viscous immediately after drag start up, ATD reduces initial drag startup inertia and results in a smoother drag from the initial hook up. For ultimate strength and rotation, BG uses our latest version of Air Rotor. This super-strong light rotor is like no other. The design disperses pressure to the entire lower section of the rotor, dramatically decreasing weight, stress and flexing while significantly increasing strength. Big on looks and big on features, the all-new, Black and Gold BG offers up a powerful combination of performance, strength and reliability in one of Daiwa’s most renowned names in heavy duty spin reels.

NELSON ROUND 13: VICTORIA / SOUTH AUSTRALIA

HOBIE KAYAK BREAM SERIES 2016

BEN PHAYER RISES TO THE CHALLENGE Anglers faced a number of challenges this weekend in the Ecogear round of the Hobie® Kayak Bream Series at Nelson, Victoria. This event was always going to be a challenge to the anglers because of the unseasonal forecasted rain in this area. Upon arriving in Nelson the colour of the water wasn’t bad considering the heavy rain over the past weeks. Further rain was predicted for the pre-fish and during the competition days within the Glenelg River catchment. This newly added rain caused the Glenelg River to go from a flood watch on Saturday to a Major flood warning issued late on Sunday morning after the tournament day had started.

The increasing amount of fresh water in the system and the lack of salt water made fishing more challenging as the tournament commenced. Twenty one anglers caught fish on Saturday and only sixteen weighed fish on Sunday which was testament to the deteriorating conditions during the event. Both Bream and Estuary perch were holding up in the deeper channels and holes where the sounders were showing a definite line where the fresh water finished and the salt started. Most of the fish were caught south from Nelson main boat ramp through to the heads. In particular to the south and west of Oxbow lake.

Corey Gallagher from Victoria held on to his day one second place position with his 5/6 Bream bag for 3.60kg. Corey concentrated on the main channels to the south of Oxbow Lake, casting up on to the shallow edges from a deep water position.

• Lures: Strike Pro Hummer Vibe in purple and Strike Pro Cyber Vibe Crank

During the Hobie Bream series this year we have introduced a number of new divisions. The division winners from this round were Nathan Prezioso taking out the youth division (under 21 years old) with his 3.10 kg, Garry Hanson took out the Masters Division (60 – 64 years old) with his 1.52 kg bag and Kurt Warmington won the First Time Entry division with his two fish bag weighing .99 kg.

“Both days I was throwing Strike Pro Hummer vibe and worked it up the bank. I used the Hummer Vibe in the new Purple Colour and the Strike Pro Cyber Crank Deep. Both lures had purple in them so it seemed that purple was the one colour that was working”.

• Reel: Daiwa Certate • Line: Unitika 4lb • Leader: Fc rock 4lb • Lure: Strike Pro Astro vibe

“Basically I threw Astro Vibes all weekend. I threw them because they were the heaviest thing I had so I wanted them to get down quick and sit on the bottom. I would give them small little hops and drag it along the bottom.

The Hogs Breath Café Boss Hog Big Bream was won by Jon Clisby with his respectable 1.12 kg bream

WALLIS LAKE ROUND 12: NEW SOUTH WALES: HOBIE KAYAK BREAM SERIES 2016

96 anglers from New South Wales, Queensland, the ACT, Victoria and as far afield as Western Australia, all descended on the seaside town of Forster in New South Wales to compete in the Hog’s Breath Cafe round of the 2016 Hobie Kayak Bream Series presented by Daiwa.

All were competing for a seat at the 2016 Australian Hobie Fishing Championship to be held on the Gold Coast in late October. This was also the last chance for those waging a

campaign for a spot on the 2016, Australian, Hobie Fishing Worlds team to build their qualifying score. The Wallis Lake arena was the perfect spot to do just that! The arena is a favourite on the Hobie Calendar, due to the quality and diversity of fishing the system delivers. There were plenty of options on offer over the weekend, from the edge fishing along Pipers Bay, Yahoo Island, and Garden Island, the weedy flats directly in front of the

launch site, to the adrenalin filled highs, and lows of oyster racks fishing found throughout the arena. The weekend started with wet, cold and windy conditions coming from the South, South West stirring up the water and bringing on an epic afternoon of fishing on Saturday resulting in 41 full bags of 4 bream and a total of 225 Yellow Fin Bream for the day.

Day two, in contrast, delivered considerably calmer conditions with high sun and very little wind making for a more comfortable, albeit tougher, second day on the water. At the close of competition, 81 of 96 anglers had presented a total 390 Yellow Fin Bream to the tournament director, weighing in excess of 180kg over the

Official Newsletter of Hobie® Fishing Australasia.

SOMERTON CLEANS UP Somerton’s impressive two day total of 8 Bream for 6.6kg were pulled from the racks, near Tuncurry, about 8km pedal from the Atomic Lures, launch site and were enough to secure him the victory with a comfortable 1.29kg lead over second place getter Kris Hickson (NSW) with 8 / 5.11kg and Carl Dubois (NSW) in third with 8 / 4.67kg. Somerton put the work in with a 16 kilometre round trip snatching the bulk of his fish from the cover some particularly shag covered oyster racks, which not only provided shelter for the fish but also a plentiful food supply. The decision paid dividends as the racks not only delivered his bags but also landed him another $100.00 for the Hog’s Breath Cafe, Boss Hog Big Bream Award for his 1.41kg Horse!

“When I got the big one, I had the crab under the racks and he went sideways with it and when he came out, I saw how big he was and he just buried me! I had the whole rod underneath the yak. I don’t know how I landed him on size 14 hooks and 10lb leader. The Cranka Crab really worked for me, he had the two sets of trebles on either side of his mouth and that’s the only reason I held on to him.”

WINNING WAYS “Fishing the racks, there was one set of racks that had shags all over it which just burley in the water. Plenty of cover, plenty of food, plenty of fish!”

WINNING TACKLE • Rod: Duffrods 1–5kg Custom • Reel: Daiwa Exist • Line: 10lb Braid • Leader: 12lb Sunline FC Rock • Hickson grabs Lure: Cranka Crab in Brackish Fiddler.

Kris Hickson from New South Wales has landed himself a seat at the Hobie Fishing Australian Championship on the Gold Coast with his second place bag of 8 bream for 5.11kg. Hickson, who won the 2014 Wallis Lake round used his prior knowledge, Google Earth, and sixmaps to map out a plan of attack for the weekend with the intention of ‘spot hopping’ a lap around Wallis Island, however after getting his bag early on Saturday morning decided to continue fishing where the fish were and save his legs. With the high sun on day two, he headed to the racks about an hour from the launch site but had to put the work in to find some of his own water as there were a lot of anglers with same idea on day two. “My game plan across both days was pitching unweighted Ecogear

Aqua Soft Plastic on a sample pack of Daiwa Saq Sas, Teflon coated, super sticky, worm hooks which worked really well on day one but the bite changed a bit on Sunday, so between that and the good old 2.5” Bloodworm ZMan GrubZ covered in Pro-Cure just pitching them as close as possible to the racks and hoping you could get them out worked really well.”

TACKLE BOX STRIKE PRO HOT DOG 65

STRIKE PRO HUMMER 40

STRIKE PRO CYBER CRANK DD

The new Strike Pro Hot Dog 65 has been designed by the Strike Pro Australia Pro Tournament team in conjunction with Strike Pro and has just been released in time for the summer top water bite.

The Hummer 40 is a plastic vibe that is perfectly weight balanced allowing the lure to rest on the bottom perfectly on its precise weighted chin, without falling over.

The new Strike Pro Cyber Crank DD is a double deep version of the popular Cyber Crank Deep lure. The new DD version dives to approx. 8ft and suspends in saltwater of which there are very few crank baits on the market that offer this feature. This allows the lure to stay in the strike zone longer keeping it in the fishes face so the angler can impart small twitches and give long pauses to entice strikes.

The Hot Dog 65 is a Walk the Dog style top water lure that has a superb action and sits perfectly at rest. It is smaller in size and is thinner in diameter than its contemporaries so it imitates a prawn perfectly and is a smaller bite size so it improves the strike and hook up rate on species like Bream and Bass. The Hot Dog 65 is 6.5cm long, weighs 4grams and is available in 6 natural colours. It is deadly on Bream and Bass but also superb on species such as Estuary Perch, Saratoga and Trout. These lures are a must have once the Prawns start running as the weather warms up. www.jurofishing.com

It has a fantastic action on the drop and lift. The Hummer also features two top tow points that allows the angler to impart different actions on the lure. The front tow point is suited for cast retrieving whilst the rear tow point is best for vertical jigging making this one very versatile lure. The Hummer 40 has helped anglers win a number of competitions including the latest competition at Nelson with Ben Phayer using it to claim the victory. It was also the lure used to secure the ‘Largest Bream’ and ‘Biggest Bag’ in the ABT Hobie Bream Series tournament history. This lure has become the “must have lure” in the lure anglers arsenal. The Hummer 40 is deadly on Bream and also very effective on Bass, Estuary Perch, Flathead and Yellowbelly. www.jurofishing.com

The new DD version is the same size as the original at 3.7cm but it is heavier at 5.2grams so it casts like a bullet, and is outstanding to use on windy days when you want to cover more ground or in calm conditions when you want to get distance from your boat or kayak on spooky fish. The Cyber Crank DD comes in 8 exceptional colours. They have proven very effective on Bream, Bass, Yellowbelly, Trout & Redfin. www.jurofishing.com
