ERIC GARCETTI MAYOR CITY OF LOS ANGELES

Dear Friends, On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, it is my pleasure to join all Angelenos in celebrating LGBT Heritage Month. Our LGBT community has been an essential thread in the rich cultural tapestry of our city, and has made L.A. a more prosperous city. From the Black Cat Tavern to the world’s oldest Pride Parade, Los Angeles is home to a wealth of LGBT history. Whether in the arts or academia, in our business or in our neighborhoods, our LGBT brothers and sisters have brought invaluable contributions to every corner of our community. I hope you will use this Calendar and Cultural Guide, created by our Department of Cultural Affairs, to learn about the many activities happening all over Los Angeles to celebrate this month. I also encourage you to enjoy the remarkable artwork we are showcasing from established and emerging LGBT artists. I send my best wishes for a memorable celebration and continued success. Sincerely, Eric Garcetti Mayor City of Los Angeles

RON GALPERIN CONTROLLER CITY OF LOS ANGELES

Dear Friends, I am proud to celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Heritage Month with you. As home to the second-largest LGBT population in the country, Los Angeles showcases the diversity, the vibrancy, and the creative spirit of LGBT Americans. As a proud member of the LGBT community, I feel lucky to live here. As City Controller - I have a responsibility to lift up those who may need a helping hand. From a resource map and clothing drive to benefit homeless LGBTQ youth, to meetings to help LGBT members have a more impactful voice in city government, we’ve worked hard. I’ve worked hard to make sure everyone has a seat at the table. My efforts are in line with our City’s continuing quest for equal rights, including the founding of the city’s first gay organization, the Mattachine Society in the 1950s, to the uprising at Cooper’s Donuts in 1959 - to Angelenos battling AIDS in the 1980s and fighting to defend basic rights today. This month, we recognize all who broke through barriers to make our City a more tolerant and vibrant place to live and work. With this calendar and cultural guide, the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) is highlighting the work of LGBT artists, promoting cultural events, and showcasing the incredible diversity of experiences that Los Angeles has to offer. During the month of June, I invite you to participate, engage, and enjoy. Learn about LGBT history, admire art and culture, and, most of all, celebrate the great City in which we live! Ron Galperin Los Angeles City Controller

HERB WESSON PRESIDENT LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL

Dear Friends, On behalf of the Los Angeles City Council, it is my privilege to invite you to celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Heritage Month in our great city! People from around the world have made Los Angeles their home, and every culture contributes to the rich diversity that makes Los Angeles among the foremost cities in the world. This month we continue to honor the achievements of our city’s LGBT community and acknowledge their meaningful contributions to L.A. With this calendar, our Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) highlights the work of our LGBT artists who keep our shared traditions alive and thriving in our communities. To mark this important month, DCA offers a wide array of arts and cultural events for your enjoyment. Please refer to this calendar to find the numerous festivals, musical events, theatrical performances, films, poetry readings, and cultural activities happening across the city. I encourage you to take part in the special events listed throughout these pages and welcome you into our neighborhoods to celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Heritage Month in the City of Angels. It is sure to be a memorable celebration! Sincerely, Herb J. Wesson, Jr. President Los Angeles City Council

MIKE BONIN COUNCILMEMBER DISTRICT 11

Dear Friends, It is with great appreciation for the many people who make the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community in Los Angeles, A City Connected Through Pride, that I write to welcome you to LGBT Heritage Month. For generations, activists and allies in Los Angeles have been living proof of how inclusivity can make a city stronger and more vibrant. Los Angeles is a place that accepts everyone, regardless of whom you love. We are a city that stands up to fight for equality for everyone, everywhere. We are a city connected with threads woven with pride. In every corner of this city, one can find people actively working to make this tapestry of diversity and pride even stronger and more vibrant. From the emergence of new pride organizations, like DTLA Proud and Venice Pride, to expanded LGBT homeless youth shelter systems, like the LGBT Center, LA’s legacy of championing pride and demanding equality is more alive than it ever has been before. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done. With a homeless population that is 27% LGBT, and rampant economic adversities facing the LGBT community, we need progressive leadership in Los Angeles to continue the march toward equality. That is why the theme of this year’s LGBT Heritage Month Celebration in LA – “A City Connected Through Pride” – is so fitting. I am proud to be a part of this fight, and to stand with you all to celebrate, resist, and march forward. Thank you for being part of this celebration of our heritage and this call to action for our future. Regards, Mike Bonin Councilmember District 11

MITCH O’FARRELL COUNCILMEMBER DISTRICT 13

Friends: On behalf of the residents in the great 13th Council District, I welcome you to the eighth annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Heritage Month Celebration at Los Angeles City Hall. My office is hosting an exhibit in the bridge gallery during the month of June to recognize LGBT Olympic athletes. Two openly gay American athletes competed during the 2018 Winter Olympics. They bravely competed on a world stage as their authentic selves; a right everyone deserves. They pushed the boundaries of physical fitness while proudly representing our country. It wasn’t always this way. Historically, most who competed at the World and Olympic level weren’t able to come out in their respective sports because of homophobia and fear of personal and professional reprisals. Whatever the era, LGBT athletes have taught us about the resilience of the human spirit, and shined the spotlight on our own community pride. Living authentically in the context of the current political climate is by its very nature, a form of resistance. Gone are the days when we are bullied into thinking we are inferior to anyone else. Our LGBT athletes remind us of that fact. The exhibit will be open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in the 3rd Floor Bridge Gallery at Los Angeles City Hall. I am proud to be a member of the LGBT community and represent you on the Los Angeles City Council. Enjoy the Heritage Month celebration here at City Hall, as well as the other festivities across our great city! Warm regards, Mitch O’Farrell Councilmember District 13

DANIELLE BRAZELL GENERAL MANAGER CITY OF LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS

Dear Friends, The Department of Cultural Affairs is pleased to present this calendar of events celebrating the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community thriving in our unique City. In this publication we honor the extraordinary range of LGBT experiences and cultural traditions transforming our society into an exciting, creative metropolis. As a proud member of the LGBT community, I want to express my appreciation for the work of the members of our LGBT Heritage Month Committee, the Mayor’s Office, the Controller’s Office, the Office of the City Attorney, and our City Council Offices for their assistance in recognizing the many nonprofit organizations, community groups, arts organizations, artists, and activists whose efforts helped us create this impressive publication full of fun, educational, and exciting events. We are also pleased to showcase a selection of contemporary art produced by our Los Angeles LGBT artists in this publication. Their vision pays homage to steps taken in the past towards progress, and looks ahead towards a future assuring equality for all. What better place to see fantastic art, experience LGBT creative culture, and celebrate a City’s great gay heritage than Los Angeles? We hope you will join in the festivities and enjoy! JOHN WATERS A celebrated filmmaker, director, and writer, John Waters has built a reputation for shocking his audiences. Many of the cult legend’s films satirize suburban America as well as social conventions and attitudes. He started out making short experimental films in the 1960s, often using friends as actors and holding renegade, underground showings in offbeat locales. Roman Candles (1966), one of his early works, marked the first time Waters worked with Divine, the larger-than-life drag queen now synonymous with Waters’ body of work. John Waters comes to the Luckman to share his unique brand of wit, humor, and wisdom. WHEN :

ALWAYSENOUGH,LOVEWINSOUT LAKHIYIA HICKS

Love is the choice to live. It is both the entrance to and the proceeding journey worth taking. Although a choice, it may appear like water in the Sahara – unexpected and rare, but never accompanied by a thought to bypass the opportunity. It’s sustaining. It may come like the sunrise – expected but whose beauty and breathtaking quality is not in the least diminished by its daily visits. One cannot help but be enveloped by the view and beam with an illuminating glow while in its presence. Love. Sometimes, it may appear like shade on a hot summer’s day – you know exactly where to find it. And when you do, for Love’s sake, please don’t hide it.

A JOY PINK LOTUS HINDUTALA

I sat in dry joy like hot beach sand

although I cannot fit your clothes and shoes and courage,

shifting in my sitting

make-up or vision…

feeling a stirring unlike standard status quo expectations

I want to know your joy- taste the air that carries your flight-

&

Whet with morning sunlit seasons spring & summer

I recognized you… the me in you

Reaching stretching rejoicing sunflowers & deeply loving red

the glitter glam glitz & giggle, jeans & timberlands… social independence, a divine oxymoron strong arms & gorgeous hair 2 mainstays of the pose & pretty toes there’s a way with you… a vogue, a stance you takeby seduction… that rides high above the no’s, the sneers, the judgment and condemnation & pigeonholes of contrived and false standards there you are you come in, always dancing, always swaying dressed all in white… in lavender cowboy boots, ruffled black satin pin stripped tuxedo

roses- long stemmed Dripping with the best of sweetness and ethereal flavors that escort your inhaling and exhalingYour acute and jarring laughter & yes, wondrous childlike giggles in adult tones I want to know your kind of joy Dry joy is painful harsh & leaves skinned knees & sharp edged tears that only cut Whet joy is inspiration comfort & genuine freedom- the wind under heavy wings makes flight Not the one ‘they’ say you/we should haveBut the one that wakes me every morning The one that lights the early morning sky and illuminates the summer moon The one that my heart beats out a rhythm to…

riding your freedom like

That kind of joy. I want that kind of joy… the joyful courage

a white Pegasus unicorn Arabian… horse

that makes me and you dance-

wide open

Even when there’s no music.

on white sands soft as down, sure as concrete you know your way because you have a way of hearing your heart Like none of the rest of us do…

TRESTLE STEVEN REIGNS

At age 16, he grabbed the side rails of the sidecar, rode the train across the long trestle. 75 feet separating him from the ground. His grip tight, his mouth open, screaming from the thrill, the wind, the full moon in Sagittarius. It sparked the penny-flat parts of him rolled over by his crazy mom, distant dad, and the mean kids at school. His ride taught him how to be with me 17 years later: to jump when I came rushing past, to hold on tight, and to know the ride is worth the risk of falling.

FRIENDS FRANCES AMPAH

Let’s just be friends we both agreed to the terms and conditions not wanting to lose each other we make adjustments we wait patiently not being impulsive restraining our inner selves we make adjustments we wait patiently one day at a time we tell our hearts we say to others when they ask we’re just friends. So simple I was pure The sea now guides me Pleasures in the sky Dreams cannot contain As through the lens I feel sentimental As I reflect I return to the sea To cleanse my wasted youth Perhaps I am whole Maybe I can I still grow Maybe there’s a chance

YOU WILL NOT BE BURIED JASON JENN

you will not be buried when you are freed from the shackles of your flesh your ashes will be rebirthed from the flaming womb not common or gray but all glittery and iridescent pink to match the sparkle in your eye that everyone knows so well your remains will reach for the sky as your thoughts often did it’ll be as if some hot hairy daddy were tossing up his infant child from some big ol’ beefy arms your squeals of delight will echo through the ages skipping joyously along the clouds putting the shiny silver lining on them like lipstick when i squint into the sun just right i’ll see your smile beaming a rainbow reflection you were always a fierce and radiant survivor you did not pass all these milestone years traversing the ravages of time and various personal calamities to wither away in a dark box sealed away from view darling you shine for all time you are the beacon of light and the breath of rarefied air that gives life to future generations

FRIDA IMANI TOLLIVER

despite the judas body, she painted

the jewelry the paintings

the body that cut their son into pieces

the tiny altars and books

and still she painted

tell me speak

garden flowers in her hair, a rebozo on her shoulders she painted

you must speak

her diego

cough the ribbons of your tongue free

found the flesh of women irresistible

lick the flesh that calls you

as did she

ink fingertips when you cannot find a brush

irresistible

walls when canvas is not nearby put flowers in your hair

if i were her lover

the big, gorgeous ones from your garden

i would caution the seams

wear the colors of your own flag

the cut and sewn parts

create when baffled create when sorrowful

she would hold me

abandon the prickle of fear

in the same mouth warmed by posole, chili

and be of your own making

her lick, a sliver of flan

begin from deep, deep

with caramel at the tip

feel the tremor

i would coax the sweet

the push, the work root

peel back the bristle

the quaking blossom

to find the tender waiting

of who you really are

becoming the taste of what tastes it

let light

her paintings follow me

let you

they come as cards, trinkets

be free

from women, always

IN HONOR OF THE ARTIST

LAURA AGUILAR The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) extends condolences to the family and friends of Laura Aguilar. Aguilar’s transition is a major loss for the art community and the City of Los Angeles. She was formidable in her vulnerability, a skilled visual composer whose photographic work and videography was contemplative and powerful in the exploration of identity. She brought beauty from the shadows and into the light. Laura was also a DCA staff member, teaching others the craft as an art instructor from 1990 to 1997. In 2001 she received one of DCA’s City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A.) Individual Artist Fellowships. In 2017 her major retrospective exhibition opened at the Vincent Price Art Museum. DCA supported the free distribution of a monographic accompanying the exhibition to Los Angeles libraries, colleges, universities, and archives. Undoubtedly, Laura’s work will continue to influence and inspire.

ABOUT THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS

DCA MANAGED HISTORIC SITES (2) DCA provides conservation services and educational programming and tours for two of LA’s most treasured historic sites, Hollyhock House and the Watts Towers. Conservation efforts are coordinated through DCA’s Historic Site Preservation Office. DCA’s Museum Education and Tours Program coordinates tours and interpretive programs for both young people and adults. Hollyhock House is Frank Lloyd Wright’s first Los Angeles project. Built between 1919 and 1921, it represents his earliest efforts to develop a regionally appropriate style of architecture for Southern California. Barnsdall Park, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Hollyhock House, was awarded landmark status in 2007 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As the nation’s highest historic landmark designation, the site has been formally recognized for its role in interpreting the heritage and history of the United States. HOLLYHOCK HOUSE Barnsdall Park 4800 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 9002 323.913.4031 The Watts Towers, built over 34 years by Simon Rodia, are a Los Angeles icon. Built from found objects, including broken glass, sea shells, pottery, and tile, the Towers stand as a monument to the human spirit and the persistence of a singular vision. The Watts Towers, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are a National Historic Landmark, a State of California Historic Park, and Historic-Cultural Monument No. 15 as previously designated by the City of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission.
