22.06.2015 Asylum Service: Two Years of Operation
During its two years of operation from June 2013 to the end of May 2015, the Greek Asylum Service registered almost 20,000 applications for international protection. During 2015 alone, the Asylum Service registered 5,115 applications which, on a monthly basis, represent an increase of 46% compared to the monthly average of 2014. While the main country of origin of asylum seekers in 2013 and 2014 was Afghanistan, in 2015 it is Syria. Another significant change which has been observed is that the numbers of families and unaccompanied minors are increasing. The recognition rate, which in 2013 was 15%, has reached almost 50% in the course of 2015 mainly as a result of the larger numbers of refugees from Syria who apply for international protection. Moreover, in the course of 2015, 638 subsequent claims have been submitted, while Greece has sent 550 take-charge applications to other European countries, pursuant to the Dublin III Regulation, mainly for reasons of family reunification. In six cases, the status of international protection, which had been granted, has been revoked either because the beneficiaries concerned renounced this status, or because they had committed especially serious crimes, in accordance with the relevant legal stipulations.
