In December of 2016, the San Bruno Police Department initiated an investigation into an allegation of theft of funds from the San Bruno Professional Firefighters Association, which is not affiliated with the City. The investigation focused on a former San Bruno Firefighter who was suspected of taking funds from the Firefighters Association Toy Drive Program between January and October of 2016. A subsequent investigation by San Bruno Police Detectives revealed that more than $25,000 had been taken from a San Bruno Professional Firefighters Association bank account over a two year period. Fifty-three year old Cloverdale resident Holly Kaye Nelson was identified as the subject who had committed these thefts. Nelson discontinued her employment with the San Bruno Fire Department in October of 2016, prior to the investigation. A warrant was issued for Nelson’s arrest for two felony counts of grand theft. On Monday, March 20, 2017, Nelson was taken into custody by San Bruno Police Investigators pursuant to the warrant. The San Bruno Professional Firefighters Association’s Annual Toy Drive continues to be an extremely worthwhile program that serves disadvantaged youth in the community. The transparency, cooperation, and timeliness of reporting by the Association were key factors in bringing this investigation to a swift and successful completion.
