LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Lower East Side Neighbors,

So much has happened in the three-and-a-half years since we reopened 197 East Broadway as Manny Cantor Center. Our programs are thriving and our center has truly become a place where our diverse neighborhood gathers. Whether you are a yoga enthusiast, a ceramics artist, a parenting center participant, a job seeker, a volunteer in our More Hands More Hearts service initiative, or an attendee of our Weinberg senior center, teen center, or early childhood program, you know what a great resource Manny Cantor Center is. We have our hearts and minds set on continued greatness. Beginning this fall, we are expanding weekday and weekend programming, so that we can continue to serve this vibrant community. As you will see, we have added arts, fitness and music programs for children, as well as expanded our arts and fitness programming for adults. We are proud to be expanding our robust Silver Sneakers programming for older adults, with the introduction of weekend Tai Chi classes. I hope that you will find a class or an opportunity that is a good fit for you or for a family member. And I hope, most of all, that you will continue Brand Elements to share with us how we can keep growing our work in alignment with the needs and aspirations of this special corner of New York City. • We’re proud to launch a new program this fall called Haggadah: Storytelling in our Immigrant City, which brings together community members to share stories of how they and their families came to the Lower East Side. The first fall event, “In the Wilderness: A StoryBooth Sukkot,” will give community members a chance to share their stories in a Sukkah built by the community in our rooftop garden. These stories will culminate in a Chanukah “Celebration of Light” festival featuring an exhibit of portraits by photographer James Maher that make visible the miracle of all immigrant journeys.
