Welcome to the Sutton Road Primary School and Nursery Prospectus. This guide will help you know more about our school life, our work & how the school is organised & maintained.

OUR FAMILY

Our school belongs to The Brunts Family of schools and relationships within our Family of Schools are excellent with lots of opportunities for planning and joint activities. Site Management advice is often sought from the Premises Team based there, I.C.T. Technical Support is provided from them and we also benefit greatly from The Arts Specialist Status held by the Brunts School.

OUR SCHOOL BUILDINGS

Our school was built in 1913. It is a large site which comprises three brick built buildings which house pupils across Nursery and the Primary age range. The buildings have a hall, 3 offices, 2 staff rooms, various resource areas in addition to the 13 classes. We have invested considerably over the years to keep all our buildings well maintained & significantly upgraded. Our 40 place Nursery is housed in a single storey building and up to 80 pupils attend either a morning or afternoon session of 3.0 hours each day. Our school enjoys extensive grass & hard play areas. Up until the Mansfield Reorganisation of schools the Sutton Road Building and the Moor Lane Building were 2 separate schools sharing the same site. Since becoming a Primary School in 2001 considerable improvements have been made to the school to enable it to function well as a full Primary School & Nursery. We have recently invested in a selection of outdoor play equipment which includes a large Pagoda which can be used as an outdoor classroom, a stage and seating area which also can be used for outdoor classroom activities as well as an intensive Trim Trail.

OUR HOPES

All our teachers & staff provide a caring environment for all our children. We hope to provide a wide, interesting and balanced experience at school which will encourage our children to become responsible and independent members of the community.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

Our schools uses the standard admissions criteria and our agreed admission limit for 2014-2015 is 60 at this point in time. Children are admitted into full time education at the ‘rising five’ school age & our intake pattern from September 2014 is as follows: Children with a 5th birthday between 1st September 2009 and 31st August 2010 will be admitted on 4th September 2013. However parents may defer their child’s entry to school until they are statutory school age without detriment to the offer of a place providing your child’s statutory age is within the same school year as their ‘ rising five’ offer of a place. If deferring the place would mean your child would need admission in the next school year parents will need to apply for admission for that school year in the usual way

OVER-SUBSCRIPTION

In the event of over subscription, the following criteria will be applied, in priority order, to determine which applicants will be granted a place, once places have first been allocated to pupils who have a statement of special educational needs which names the school: 1. Children looked after by a local authority. 2. Children who live in the catchment area and who, at the time of admission, have a brother or sister attending the school or linked junior/primary school. 3. Other children who live in the catchment area. 4. Children who live outside the catchment area and who, at the time of admission, have a brother or sister attending the school or linked junior/primary school. 5. Other children who live outside the catchment area. In the event of over-subscription, within any criterion, preference will be given to children who live nearest to the school as the crow flies. Distances are measured from the entrance to the child’s home to the principal entrance to the main administrative building of the school.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

The following groups of children will be given special consideration in their application for a particular school. Children whose particular medical needs, mobility support needs, special educational needs and disabilities or social circumstances are supported by written evidence from a doctor, social worker or any other relevant professional stating that the school is the only school which could cater for the child’s particular needs. The evidence must be presented at the time of application. The Local Education Officer will consider each case on its merits and determine the allocation of any such place on the basis of the written evidence. Admissions under ‘special circumstances’ will take precedence over all but the first of the numbered criteria. Children of Nomadic Travellers will be allocated a place at their catchment SUTTON ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL & NURSERY PROSPECTUS 2013-2014

area school. Admissions to schools at other times If you wish to apply for a place in a Nottinghamshire school at a time other than the normal age of transfer you should contact the School Admissions Team for an application form. If you wish to transfer your child from one Nottinghamshire school to another, you can obtain a form from your child’s current school. It is, however advisable to discuss this with you child’s current Head Teacher as children benefit from continuity of teaching and learning and your child’s current Head Teacher will wish to have the opportunity of discussing any possible transfer with you before you complete the application form. Please contact our school admissions team to request an application form: Infant, Junior or Primary schools01623 433433 Secondary schools0115 8546161 Alternatively, you can download the application form the Nottinghamshire County Council website www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk. If you are applying for a voluntary aided, foundation, trust, academy or a school in another local authority we will forward your application to them for their consideration against their oversubscription criteria. You will be notified in writing of the outcome of your application. If your preferred school is full in your child’s year group, you will be offered the right of appeal and be advised of the next nearest schools with places available. The right to appeal applies to all Community, Voluntary Controlled, Voluntary Aided, Trust, Foundation and Academy Schools. Nottinghamshire Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools do not hold waiting lists for in-year applications. However, some Voluntary Aided, Foundation, Academy Schools may do so and it is advisable to check their admission arrangements for details of waiting lists.

Children arriving in the UK from countries outside the European Union normally have a right to be educated in maintained schools. It is likely, however that admission authorities will seek proof of entitlement. Please contact the Schools Admissions Team for further advice and guidance.

FOUNDATION STAGE

The Foundation Stage comprises of Foundation 1 (nursery) and Foundation 2 (Reception) Classes (3-5years). The Foundation 1 children are based in the Nursery building adjacent to the main school and attend either a morning or afternoon session. The unit is purpose built for children of 3 and 4 years of age and is well equipped and maintained to promote learning and development. The building is surrounded by grassed and concrete play areas and has a variety of play equipment. The SUTTON ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL & NURSERY PROSPECTUS 2013-2014

children have access to the main school field to further enhance physical development. The Foundation Stage children learn through a wide range of play and practical based activities. The activities and teaching sessions that take place are designed to help children develop confidence, thinking skills, become independent and to make good friendships. The Foundation Stage Curriculum is divided in to seven main areas of learning:  Personal, Social and Emotional Development  Communication and Language (Listening and attention, speaking and understanding)  Literacy (Reading and Writing)  Mathematics  Understanding the World  Physical Development (includes health and self-care)  Expressive Arts and Design (eg music, songs and dances, artwork) Foundation 1 children also share in many of the main school activities and work in collaboration with F2. In April 2009 we opened our F2 unit based in the Moor Lane Building. This unit provides facilities for our Early Years Foundation Stage children and has been designed with children’s learning and development in mind. Children have access to an array of resources in an enabling environment. Children attend on a full time basis and access the Foundation Stage Curriculum through whole class, small group and child initiated learning. Literacy and Mathematics is taught on a daily basis. We believe children in our Foundation Stage feel happy and secure, are valued and given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

HOMEWORK

Homework can be a valuable addition to the work that children do in school. It can give children extra practice when they need it, in the skills they have learned in school e.g. numeracy, spelling, reading. This can increase the children’s speed and confidence and helps them to remember what they have been taught. Children may be asked to:  Complete literacy/numeracy based homework (sometimes target related)  Research a given topic  Learn spellings  Learn their times tables  Go on our Moodle Virtual Learning Environment Please support them by:  Showing an interest in any work your child brings home,  Checking whether your child has any homework to complete,  Giving your child support when they need it,

NUMERACY

Following the guidelines from the Primary National Strategy, numeracy is taught on a daily basis and is organised into five blocks. The structure is the same for every year group. The blocks are covered every term, with each term building on the previous one. Our work includes:       

Calculating (written and mental) Securing number facts (times tables and other number facts) Handling data Shape, measurements and space Understanding Logical thinking Problem solving

Children access a balance between group and whole class teaching depending on their needs. Our aim is to teach a range of mathematical concepts and skills and to develop an ability in the children to apply these skills.

THE SCHOOL’S SPORTS AIMS AND PROVISION

As part of our aim to develop the whole child, we place a high emphasis on physical activities that will help promote a healthy body. Our school has also been awarded the Gold Healthy School Mark in recognition that we make a significant contribution to our pupils well-being. We feel it is important that the children experience as wide a range of sporting activities as possible as each individual will develop different skills and competencies. The school aims to provide pupils of all abilities and backgrounds with a positive attitude towards sport and to promote and encourage active and healthy lifestyles. The P.E. curriculum provides football, hockey, tag-rugby, rounders, Kwik cricket, athletic activities, gymnastics, basketball, netball, dance and swimming. These sports are supplemented by a range of extra curricula activities provided by outside professionals. These include football, golf, basketball, and other multi-skills tournaments, etc, held within our family of schools and Brunts. All children participate in the annual School Sports Day. Through competitive sport, pupils at Sutton Road Primary School learn to understand the concepts of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATIONS

The school is not affiliated to any one religious denomination or belief. We aim to provide a positive environment for children from differing ethnic groups by ensuring their own background and faith is reflected in the life of the school.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION POLICY

As in the Nottinghamshire Agreed Syllabus, if you do not wish your child to partake in religious worship or instruction, we are happy to make other arrangements.

MUSIC TUITION

Tuition is available through the Arts Support Service for violin, keyboards, and guitars. Children are auditioned at Key Stage 2 and given the opportunity to take lessons. A fee is payable in advance.

LITERACY

English is a core subject in the National Curriculum. At Sutton Road Primary we believe that:  English is the major vehicle for learning throughout the whole school. It should develop pupils’ abilities to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to listen with understanding.  English should also enable children to be enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable readers.  English provides opportunities to develop and express critical awareness, appreciation, sensitivity to others thoughts and feelings and self awareness.  Language is an integral and vital part of all curriculum areas, both overt and hidden. It is not only a discipline in its own right, but also a means of access to all other learning experiences.  In English, as in any other curriculum area, all children regardless of race, gender, creed or ability, should have equal opportunities and any materials and ideas used should reflect this approach. In all year groups, literacy is taught for an hour daily. Also, we have a discrete daily guided reading session and a discrete daily phonics lesson for KS1 and FS. Every Friday, all classes take part in The Big Write.

SUTTON ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL & NURSERY PROSPECTUS 2013-2014

PAGE 11

We recognise that children learn best in different ways. Throughout a unit of literacy we incorporate activities to suit different learning styles into everyday lessons. A unit of learning will include opportunities for:                

Exposure to a wide variety of texts Speaking and listening activities Phonics Shared reading/writing Independent reading/writing Shared composition Supported composition Guided writing Drama activities Group discussion Response partner work Self-assessment Peer-assessment Improving spelling Improving handwriting Guided reading is taught outside of the literacy hour in discrete sessions for 20 minutes per day in KS2 and 15 minutes per day in KS1 and FS2. It focuses on the teaching of specific objectives.

Phonics

In Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 phonics is taught in a discrete daily session and also regularly in KS2 nurture groups . It is considered the prime learning approach in early reading and writing. The programme of study that we follow is a combination of ‘Jolly Phonics’ and the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme.

The Big Write

An hour is given to The Big Write each week to practice and apply VCOP strategies to enhance writing content and quality in pupils individual work. This helps children to improve sentence structure and the planning of the piece of writing. After practical activities children independently complete a piece of writing. This piece of writing is then marked by the class teacher and a ‘Super Short Target’ is given for the children to try and include in their next piece of literacy writing and in the next piece of writing for The Big Write.

ART & DESIGN

Art and Design is the expression of ideas, thoughts and feelings, through sensory experience in a variety of two and three-dimensional media. At Sutton Road Primary we aim to:  Develop children’s visual awareness and enjoyment of art and design.  Provide children with the opportunity to use art and design to record their feelings and express their creative imagination.  Provide children with the opportunity through the use of a range of artistic media to acquire skills and develop artistic techniques.  Develop children’s appreciation and understanding of art and design so that they have a growing ability to describe what they see accurately, using artistic terms.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

D&T is primarily a practical subject. At Sutton Road Primary we aim to:  Provide children with the opportunity to investigate products to gain information (about their construction) to add to their knowledge and understanding.  Encourage children to use their knowledge to help them generate ideas and choose the designs most likely to be successful.  Provide children with opportunities to develop practical skills which can then be used at individual or group level to promote good design and make well finished items.  Encourage children to evaluate their work and identify areas for improvement.  Provide first hand experiences of various materials, tools and products in a safe environment.  Develop problem solving through co-operation and the development of language skills. Food Technology  Children will be given a wide variety of opportunities to explore Food Technology.  We believe that children should learn how to prepare and combine ingredients, showing an awareness of healthy options.  Hygiene is paramount and should actively be taught as part of each Food Technology lesson.

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

ICT both within our school and outside it through on-line developments, is vital to inspire and engage our young learner (and adults) through many different mediums. We follow the Nottinghamshire agreed syllabus for ICT. We will enrich current and future ICT experiences for all users through a creative curriculum that seamlessly incorporates ICT fundamentals into our Literacy, Numeracy and other curriculum areas. This makes the learning process smoother for the children whilst applying skills that they have already learnt in ICT. We continually strive to explore the impact of new technologies and embed these into the teaching and learning through the school, whilst giving our children the opportunities to carry on the learning process at home through access on-line to school based documents and activities. Whatever the learning styles of our children, we will encourage and enable them to discover ICT in ways best suited to their individual needs.

Our dren confiinde-

chilwill be dent,

pendent and knowledgeable about ICT. Safety in ICT is paramount to our children’s experiences and is achieved by safeguarding them from inappropriate materials by raising awareness and monitoring, including awareness of on-line E-Safety.

HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY

History is a study of events and people from the past. History helps children to develop an awareness of chronology and to understand how and why things have changed over time and how events in the past can influence present day life. Geography is a study of places, climates & environmental issues. It helps children to understand similarities and differences between our locality and the wider world. In History & Geography, as in any other Curriculum area, all children regardless of race, gender, creed or ability, should have equal opportunities and any materials and ideas used should reflect this approach.

ATTENDANCE

Our aim at Sutton Road Primary School is to provide the greatest opportunity for children’s learning. We must ensure that all our pupils have an equal chance to make good use of the education that the school offers by providing a positive and encouraging atmosphere. For this to be achieved it is important that each child attends school regularly and punctually. The school recognises that parents have a vital role to play in order to support and encourage good attendance and punctuality. As attendance is crucial to effective learning and the continuity of learning experiences, school places great emphasis on this with its communication with parents. Since April 2010, a lot of work has been done on further raising the awareness of the importance of attending school every day with our pupils and parents. Attendance leaflets are sent out regularly at the beginning of each term detailing what is considered to be authorised and unauthorised attendance and these leaflets are now attached to all holiday forms requesting absence from school. Absence for holidays taken during school term time are not authorised by our school. Patterned absences and late arrivals are monitored regularly in school and also regularly by the Behaviour and Attendance Service. Letters are sent out to parents highlighting the higher than expected level of absence or late marks and asking for them to support us in this matter. However, if the trend continues then the child is referred to the Targeted Support Service who carry out a house visit and report back to the school. Letters are also sent out to those parents and carers where attendance and late marks have improved as we feel it is important that such an improvement step forward is recognised. Persistent or concerning levels of attendance or lateness trigger an invitation to a formal attendance panel meeting which is now held once a term.

95% or higher is good attendance. Certain incentives are given to pupils for good attendance Weekly attendance is read out every Friday in Mentions assembly. The SUTTON ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL & NURSERY PROSPECTUS 2013-2014

class in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 with the highest weekly attendance receives a certificate. If a class receives 3 highest attendance certificates or more per half term then the class can choose a treat. Every half term, the class with the highest attendance in KS1 and KS2 have a non uniform day. Pupils achieving 100% attendance each term receive a certificate. Pupils achieving 100% attendance over the year receive a golden certificate as well as a day-trip to Belton House. Class attendance and weekly late marks are reported in our school weekly newsletter.

REMEMBER: EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNTS! ANNUAL HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME

These will no longer be authorised within our new policy as decided by the Governors in April 2010. Extremely exceptional cases will be considered. A special form is available for parents to request leave during term time.

SICK CHILDREN

Please do not send a sick child into school as we have no facilities to care for children who are unwell. If your child is taken ill at school you will be contacted and asked to arrange collection of your child. It is essential that we have an up-to-date day-time contact address and, if possible, telephone number, so that parents can be contacted in an emergency.

SPECIAL NEEDS TEACHING ARRANGEMENTS

Sutton Road Primary School in liaison with the other schools in the Brunts Family is concerned for each child to reach their full educational potential. Every child at some time during their school career may experience special educational needs. This may include: Gifted and Talented, Statemented or other specific individual needs. Our Special Educational Needs and Disability Policy has been written in line with the Revised Code of Practice 2001, the Special Needs and Disability Act of 2001 and The Every Child Matters agenda. Initial identification of Special Needs is the responsibility of the class teacher in partnership with you as parents and with other professionals. Access to the curriculum for your child will be facilitated by the class teacher who will ensure curriculum tasks are set at the appropriate level for your child and are modified to your child’s needs through planning, delivery, content or outcome. This is known as differentiation. The Special Needs Coordinator (SENCO) for Sutton Road Primary School is Nicola Davies and the Assistant SENCO / Inclusion Leader for the school is Mrs Sally Harvey. The SENCO’s work in collaboration with any relevant professional agencies and are available to you as parents by appointment after school to discuss any concerns you may have about the special needs of your child. Opportunities are also available for discussion with our other Special Needs Staff by appointment. Where appropriate your child may be withdrawn from class for individual, small group support or extension activities, for short periods of time. Extra support may be given in the classroom on a regular or fixed term basis, or a more in depth assessment may be carried out. Our school benefits from the work of our Educational Psychologist, Sarah Profit and from our Inclusion Support Service and Behaviour Support Service links. At the relevant stages it is hoped that you as parents will become involved in reviews and support in the writing of the individual education plans for your child. A parent partnership officer, appointed by Nottinghamshire, can also be called on to support parents. The overall responsibility for the implementation of the Special Needs Policy is “within” the remit of the Governors. Our named Governor for Special Needs and Disability is Mrs. Mary Whetstone. For further information on the identification, assessment and provision Sutton Road Primary School makes for Special Educational Needs and Disability please consult the schools Special Educational Needs and Disability Policy. The school is accessible to pupils who require disabled access to all buildings. Details of the measures the school takes to ensure accessibility can be found annexed to the S.E.N.D Policy in our Access Plan and DDA Policy. We also have an Inclusion Policy. We have written an Access Plan, in conjunction with a working party, to further our approach to ensure disabled pupils are fully included and not treated less favourably at Sutton Road Primary School. We have a Disability Discrimination Act Plan as part of our on-going progress. SUTTON ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL & NURSERY PROSPECTUS 2013-2014

EXTRA-CURRICULAR SOCIETIES AND ACTIVITIES

At Sutton Road, we think it is important that children are given wide and varied opportunities to develop extra-curricular skills. To support this, we have many after school clubs running, which are heavily subsidised by the school, so are either Free or cost a maximum of £2 per week. The majority of our clubs are run by external providers and some of the clubs we have running include: Football Basketball Music Cricket Art Film Multi-Skills

For many years now we have had an extended visit open to Key Stage 2 children during the summer term to Bamburgh in Northumberland. This have been very successful and continues to be popular amongst our pupils. We also offer an extended visit open to year 6 children to a PGL Centre at Caythorpe in Lincolnshire. During the year, the school offers many trips away from school to places that are useful to learning and are linked to certain topics that the children are covering such as the Jorvik Viking Centre, The Deep, etc. We also offer special trips for the children at Christmas time and towards the end of the school year.

RETRACE - RETRAINING AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION CENTRE

Following a successful bid for EEC funding, the school some time ago built a Centre to support the community. It provides some training opportunities for our local community but is now also part of the provision for Children’s Centre Services for the Titchfield and Oakham Wards. We work closely with Sure Start on this project.

OFSTED

Our most recent Ofsted Inspection took place on May 22nd-23rd 2012 by Lynne Blakelock, in which were given an overall ‘Good’ judgement. Aspects of the school that were judged to be Good include achievement of pupils from Foundation Stage right through to Year 6, the quality of teaching, behaviour and the school’s overall capacity for sustained improvement. “The Headteacher’s inspirational and effective leadership is the basis for the

very clear direction to the school’s work, the support of all of the staff, and continuing improvements in its performance. Senior leadership has been strengthened, providing both good support for the Headteacher and a comprehensive overview of the school’s performance. Good systems to manage and monitor its performance have been embedded and continue to be refined. Middle leaders’ and managers’ specific roles and their accountability, together with the detailed, regular and focused monitoring of the school’s work, confirm that the school can continue to move forward. The impact of leadership and management is good. The school has made good progress since the last inspection in improving pupils’ attendance and in embedding strategies to improve their writing. Both continue to be priorities. Staff’s professional development targets and training opportunities are very closely aligned with the school’s improvement planning goals. This is evident in the quickly developing creative curriculum, which is focusing more on developing pupils’ skills and enriching their learning, and in continuing to strengthen the quality of teaching. The curriculum is planned carefully, with learning based round literacy and numeracy. It caters well for those who find aspects of learning difficult or whose circumstances make them potentially vulnerable, through nurture groups.” Extracts from the full report which can be found on the Ofsted website.

In addition to this, our good practice in teaching and learning has been recognised by our Local Authority and is now used to provide training and guidance for other schools. We really are truly now a school which is continuing to grow from strength to strength.

BEHAVIOUR AND DISCIPLINE

Our school operates a ‘Positive Behaviour’ policy and all children are expected to behave with consideration towards others at all times. We review our behaviour policy every year and consult our staff, parents and children about our rewards and incentives to ensure this is effective in its provision and implementation. Full copies of the policy are available to view in the school.

A LETTER FROM THE GOVERNING BODY

The Governing body at Sutton Road Primary would like to offer a big WELCOME to all new children and their families starting our school on this new & exciting journey of learning, discovering new things, making new friends as well as providing you with the stepping stones for your future. The Governing Body at Sutton Road Primary works very hard and puts in a great deal of time and effort to ensure that every child receives the education which they deserve and is responsible for the school providing best value to its pupils, staff and the surrounding community. As you can see, we have quite a few parent governors at school whose role is to represent the parents of all our pupils, however, we also have community and local authority governors who also have your best interests at heart. You are welcome to contact any of these governors, via the school office at any time and they will do their best to help you in whatever way they can or provide you with the information you need.

Also, if you are interested yourself, or would like to find out more about being a governor, they will be only too pleased to have a chat with you. Good Luck on your new journey and we look forward to meeting you in the near future.

WATER BOTTLE If you so wish, your child may bring to school a named water bottle containing fresh water only, not fruit juice or squash.

SCHOOL MILK

School milk is provided through CoolMilk, Nottinghamshire County Council’s chosen provider. Milk is available to all pupils but parents need to register their child with CoolMilk. Currently milk is provided free to pupils under 5 years and pupils under 7 in receipt of Free School Meals, who are registered with CoolMilk. Registration forms are available from the School Office or parents may register on the CoolMilk website www.coolmilk.com

ROAD SAFETY

We liaise with outside agencies to improve the standard of road safety for our children. It is hoped that parents will work with the school in this matter and teach their child road safety rules in addition to providing a good role model when you pick up children from school. The school car parks are not for parental use due to the safety risk this can pose. We also have a ‘Park & Stride’ scheme in place which we have organised with the help of two local public houses, The Bold Forester and Sir John Cockle. We have permission to use their car parks at school time so parents can park safely and walk the remaining distance to school. We also take part in regular ‘Walk to School’ days which is part of the Healthy Schools Initiative. Some of our Year 6 pupils have been working towards achieving a Helping Hands award by addressing ongoing problems of cars parked dangerously or illegally on the zigzag lines outside school before and after school hours. These children issue a yellow card for the first offence to offenders and a red card for repeated offenders. Our neighbourhood Warden, Gary Carter supports us with this.

THE CARE OF PUPILS

The class teacher is responsible for the welfare of all children in his/her class. Parents are encouraged to contact the school to discuss problems they might have with their children. Parents are also consulted if the school has difficulties with a child, whether these are educational or otherwise. Regular Parents Evenings are held to discuss the progress of individual children. The Foundation Stage Coordinator and Key Stage 1 Leader meet the parents of all new admissions to school and Nursery staff meet all those admitted to the Nursery.

PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE

Governors purchase extra public liability insurance at additional cost for all its pupils and staff. This covers them fully for any activities children may be involved with outside school eg: trips and extended visits.

SAFETY AND WELFARE

Parents describe us as a caring school. We place great emphasis on the safety and welfare of our children. The development of children’s social skills is one of our strengths and this encourages children to play an active role in the care of others.

SMOKING

We are a smoke free school. This rule also applies to parents/carers when in the school playground at the beginning and end of the school day.

VISITS ON FOOT

From time to time we may take the children out of school, whether for a school trip or golden mention award to a location in the immediate area, which would be done on foot. We always inform you beforehand if we wish to take children out in this way.

HYGIENE AND SAFETY

In the interest of hygiene and safety, dogs are not allowed in the school playground. We also ask parents not to smoke on the premises. pushchairs at the bottom of the stairs.

VISITING ARRANGEMENTS

Parents are very welcome to visit the school, preferably by prior arrangement. This is in order that arrangements can be made to show you around the school and answer any questions that you may have about the school.

SITE SECURITY

To ensure all our children are safe throughout the day, all gates to the site are locked from 9.15am - 2.45pm. Any parents needing access to both the Sutton Road Building and the Moor Lane Building during school hours should use the intercom system by the main pedestrian gate and report to Reception in the Sutton Road Building.

PARENTS IN SCHOOL

Parents are welcomed into school as helpers by class teachers. Please contact your child’s class teacher if you would like to become involved. Obviously, this would only be granted following the necessary Safeguarding checks.

PTA (PARENT & TEACHER ASSOCIATION)

We have a very active committee which is a mixture of parents and staff who work together to organise various fundraising events to help raise money for the school. These vary from children only events, such as disco’s & tuck shops, to family events such as the Summer & Christmas Fairs. Our PTA provides a unique opportunity for parents of our children to meet each other, while giving you the chance to get more involved with the school and meet staff. If you are interested in becoming involved in this, please contact the School Office.

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN & CHILD PROTECTION

Every school is required to refer their concerns to the Children’s Social Care Services Department. While we will seek, in general, to discuss these concerns with the family and where possible seek agreement to making the referral, this will only be done where such discussion and agreement seeking will not place a child at increased risk of significant harm. This procedure is intended to protect children from abuse. When we refer a concern about a pupil to the Children’s Social Care Services Department we are not accusing the parents/ carers of abuse, but requesting that further enquiries take place and that any necessary help and support is provided. There are three designated people for safeguarding children at our school and a designated Governor. We operate within the Notts Safeguarding Children Board guidelines for recruiting staff and all visitors to the school are dealt with through the school office. Any Child protection issues are dealt with following the NSCB guidelines by the designated people in school. Please be aware that the school will take any reasonable action to ensure the safety of it pupils.

MEDICATION

Where a child requires medication in school, other than in the case of inhalers for asthma, it must be administered by the child’s parent who is welcome to come into school for that purpose. In very exceptional circumstances, for Special Needs pupils with medical conditions such as A.D.H.D. which require special drugs, and on receiving medical proof from the relevant bodies, a special form can be obtained from the Head Teacher/ SENCO which allows the drugs to be administered by named members of staff.

CHILD WELFARE

We always have the safety and welfare of our children at heart. It is possible that during the time that children are on the register their family circumstances may change. If this should happen it is in the children's interests that parents let us know. This is particularly the case where there are Court Orders restricting access to children. So please keep us informed.

SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE

Routine medical screening is carried out by the Health Authority. This may involve screening of vision, screening of hearing, medical examination which parents are invited to attend should they wish & dental inspections. If any of these examinations reveals a potential problem then parents will be informed of this by the Health Authority.

SCHOOL NURSES

Our school Nurses can be contacted at Mansfield Community Hospital Stockwell Gate, Mansfield, and on Telephone number 01623 785530.

HEAD LICE

Many children and their families contract head lice at some time. This is a problem for the whole community and the only way to eradicate the problem is for everyone within the community to be vigilant. The current recommended treatment is frequent conditioning & combing of affected hair. This should eliminate the problem within two weeks. If we see your child with live crawling lice we will contact you immediately & request that you start treatment straight away.

COMPLAINTS

We aim to work closely with parents, carers and families and we would hope that if you have any concerns or problems about your child you would feel able to come in and discuss them with your child’s Class Teacher as soon as they arise. It may be about something that can be quickly discussed first thing in the morning or after school. If it is something that will take longer than a few minutes it is better to talk to the teacher after school when it is quieter and they will make every effort to deal with your concerns. However, if the Class Teacher is unable to help then please speak to one of our Key Stage Leaders who will listen to your concerns. If either are unable to help then please speak to Mrs Davies. For full details of what steps you are to take should you have a complaint, please obtain from the School Office a copy of our complaints leaflet, titled ‘Listening To You’.
