PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear HaiSians, I am honoured and humbled to be called to serve as Hai Sing Catholic School's 11th Principal. It is a school with rich heritage, established in 1959 and 58 years old in 2017. As I take on the mantle of steward of this school, I am conscious of its rich heritage since its days as Hai Sing Girls' High School sited at Upper Serangoon under the leadership of the FMM sisters, including Sister Maria Ng who is still serving on the School Management Committee. The school subsequently moved to its current site at Pasir Ris and became Hai Sing High School, a co-ed school, under the able stewardship of the late Mrs Lydia Wan. Later, it became known as Hai Sing Catholic School in 1999. Hai Sing Catholic School is a school of possibilities where each of our students can fulfil their dreams. Our School’s vision is: Rooted in truth and charity, nurtured for academic, aesthetic, physical, social and moral growth. We have welcomed 280 students to our Secondary One cohort of 2017. This continued strong demand for places in our school is a testament to the quality of education that we have become known for and I intend to continue this rich tradition, working together and supporting our capable and deeply committed staff in building up its distinctive programmes and unique Catholic ethos. Term One began with us inducting our new HaiSians at Secondary One Orientation, and it has flown by with HaiSians demonstrating much excitement, energy and fervour in their pursuits. This e -newsletter is an attempt to bring this excitement out to you, our stakeholders, so that you may share in the pride and joy that we feel in witnessing the growth and development of our students. We hope that you will enjoy reading about the featured highlights, and seeing photographs of HaiSians in action. Perhaps you may even spot your child featured in one of them. We would like to thank our School Management Committee, our Parents and our Alumni for supporting our HaiSian Brand of Education. Ad Veritatem Per Caritatem. Hai Sing shine forth!

Mr Daniel Ang Principal

SECONDARY ONE ORIENTATION & CAMPFIRE C’mon and say it together, “One Voice, One Heart!” The theme for this year’s Secondary One Orientation sounds like an NDP slogan, but isn’t this the spirit that we all want our Secondary Ones to have when they join our Hai Sing Family? Indeed, may this slogan be a rallying call to the Secondary One cohort throughout their years in Hai Sing! This year’s Orientation was jam-packed with ice-breakers, team-bonding games, class flag-making sessions, talks, cheers, and surprise, surprise… lessons! Yes, you didn’t read it wrongly—lessons! I know what you’re thinking, but as it turned out, the Secondary Ones were excited to meet their subject teachers for the first time. Of course, nothing else beats water games during the Orientation. Played in the school field, each class used their wits to protect their paper base from splashes from the other classes’ attacks. Fighting spirit was definitely strong; the last man standing holding up the paper base did not give up, dodging attacks right till the very end! We salute you, Sir! The Campfire on Friday night saw an overwhelming attendance of proud parents witnessing their children explain their class flags and dance to the cheers together with their new-found friends. The atmosphere was so energising that it turned the gloom of looming bad weather (we almost had to shift the Campfire indoors) into a fun-filled one! That night, the Secondary One cohort exemplified the true spirit of “One Voice, One Heart”. We’re very proud of you, Sec Ones. Welcome to the family!

TOTAL DEFENCE WEEK As part of the Total Defence Week, our graduating cohort went on various Learning Journey trips to learn about Singapore’s successes and challenges in this globalised world. The students visited Parliament House, IExchange, Fusionworld, CPIB as well as participated in the Maritime Trail. Students learn about our government’s legislative functions and Singapore's present economic ability and strength as well as its future challenges ahead. Learning is fun!

LIVING MEMORIES of

WORLD WAR II Mr Lee Kwong Wah shared about his war time experiences when he was a child and the sufferings he went through. He reminded all of us that we must treasure and protect Singapore at all cost as war can drastically change our lives just like it did to his. His speech was a poignant reminder that we should not take Singapore's present successes and safety for granted. Together, as a nation, we keep Singapore strong.

S TA F F WELFARE COMMITTEE

The Staff Welfare Committee began 2017 by blessing one another with Christmas gifts to foster unity and team spirit among the members. Next, on 18 January, three exciting activities were organised for Staff Bonding Day: Captain's Ball, Cooking and Karaoke. There was sweat dripping off the staff's brows, sweet smells wafting through the kitchen and perfect pitches resounding through the Student Development Centre. That afternoon was definitely one to remember. Finally, on 1 February, all staff gathered for a Lo Hei (Prosperity Toss) session, which has become an annual highlight for our Chinese New Year. The only exception this year being was that it done with more gusto—shredded white radish, carrots, red peppers, turnip, and salmon flew into the air (and all over the tables) as blessings were proclaimed in unison. Indeed, we wish everyone 鸡年大吉, 新 想事成! Many blessings in the Year of the Rooster and may all your wishes and dreams come true!
