2017 Principal’s Message The Blessings of Giving at Thanksgiving Saint Mother Theodore was a wonderful example of giving. Besides devoting her life to God, she also studied medicine in order to care for people who could not

afford a doctor. In the early 1800’s she traveled to America where she worked very hard to open schools, orphanages, and pharmacies to serve the poor. She was an amazing example of caring for those in need. So how can we be “saintly” like her? Take every opportunity to help others. As we collect items for the food bank remind mom and dad to pick up a few extra things for our collection. When we see someone alone on the playground make sure you stop and invite them to play. When someone acts harshly towards you, respond back with patience and care. When your parents are busy looking after you show your thanks by helping in any small way. Take time and play with siblings, help grandparents, and make sure you honor your parents by being a great listener. Take time to say a prayer of thanksgiving for the blessing of someone special in your life. Be an example of thanksgiving by your actions, prayers, and your words. God bless all of our families during this month of thanksgiving.

Using Our Bus/Drop-Off Lane - Respecting All

With a large population we want to share with parents our respectful guidelines for our Bus/Drop-off lane in front of the school. In this way we can have students arrive safely at school and accommodate our hard working bus drivers as well as support our families with small children or those with children who have severe medical concerns. Safety for all is our primary concern. 1. Two Small Red Fluorescent Pylons In The Lane means please do not enter - we have buses arriving EXCEMPTION - Parents delivering children with severe medical issues - wheelchairs, broken legs, or other severe medical issues have our permission to come in the lane and drop off their kids. If you see a car in the lane, do not follow them unless the pylons are gone. 2. No Pylons In The Lane means you are free to drop off or pick up your child. We have 4 preschool programs and 3 kindergarten programs which means about 140 wonderful little people coming and going with parents. Parents do appreciate being able to avoid the long walk from a parking spot down the street. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Preparing Our Students for the Future Reading is the basis for everything. Our school spends lots of time, energy, and resources to develop strong reading skills for the future. Our library is actually two libraries. We have our regular library and our Accelerated Reader selection of books. By the time your child leaves our school they have read hundreds of books and have developed strong reading skills. Whatever their future holds they will use their reading skills to get there.

Terry Fox Walk A total of $584.50 was donated to the Terry Fox Foundation to help

find a cure for Cancer. THANK YOU to all students and parents for a successful “Walk”

To Our Great School Volunteers Just a reminder that all volunteers who work with students will need to complete the volunteer registration form along with a Criminal Record Check and Child Welfare Check. Please hand them into the office in an envelope. Thanks again for

your cooperation. We appreci-

ate all that you do at our

school.

Celebrating With Our Little People In Mind Halloween is just around the corner and no doubt it is a very exciting time for our students. As you being the exciting task of choosing a costume, we ask that you refrain from sending your child to school with a costume that is excessively gory or violet. We certainly don’t want to scare our younger students in our school. Happy Halloween!!

Halloween Parade of Costumes Besides the treats, an exciting part of Halloween is being able to show off your costume. Here is the schedule for October 31st 12:05pm to 12:30pm - Lunch time for all students 12:30pm - 12:50pm - Students in grades 1-5 put on costumes. Please do not wear your costume to school unless you are kindergarten or preschool. 1:15pm - Parade of Costumes begin. Parents can join in the gym as our students do a big circuit around the school enjoying all of the great costumes. Activities in the afternoon will be organized by the homeroom teachers. Please contact your classroom teacher before bringing any treats for the afternoon. Since the students will be receiving a great deal of sweet treats at night, we are encouraging healthy treats in the afternoon so we don’t have 350 upset stomachs going home after school

Lost and Found Our lost and found items are piling up already. This year we will be donating these items to charity if they have been in the lost and found for more than a month. Please put your child’s name in all of their clothing and especially in their coats, boots and shoes. Remember to check the lost and found regularly for items that belong to you.

Thanks For Your Support in Protecting our Students We have been most appreciative of everyone’s diligence in ensuring that food items sent to school do not contain any nut products. As you recall, we now have several students in the school with potentially lift threatening reactions to nuts. We would ask that you continue to support our initiative, especially as seasonal celebrations, approach, Halloween and Christmas. We are a nut sensitive school.

It is Lunch Time Due to safety concerns and giving a proper amount of time to eat

lunch, students will not have access to microwaves or boiling water to prepare special lunches.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all school staff and students that helped make Orange Shirt Day a success. Your participation and support in spreading awareness that 'Every Child Matters' furthers the cause of reconciliation in our community, province, and country. I look forward to your participation on further First Nations, Métis, and Inuit events. Miigwetch, Raevon Gehring FNMI Support Teacher

On September 19th, Parent Council had our first meeting of the new school year. As a reminder we meet monthly and all parents are welcome to attend and participate in a variety of initiatives to improve our children’s school experience. Our next meeting will take place on October 18th at 6:00pm; please mark your calendars. Babysitting will be provided in the school gym during the meeting. We are actively looking for volunteers for our hot lunch program. You can reach our new hot lunch Co-ordinator, Shannan Mondor at 403-594-1348 or [email protected] if you are interested in helping. Please see St. Patrick’s School website for other volunteering opportunities (http://stpatricksschool.ca/Volunteers.php).

One of our most important endeavors of the year is the Trip of the Month Fundraiser. Our first draw (Hawaii) is at the end of October. We are nearing the halfway mark with ticket sales and only 500 tickets are printed. Your continued support to ensure the success of this fundraiser is greatly appreciated. See Shawna at the office or contact Karen (403-581-1814) to purchase tickets. We are very excited about the quality of the trips this year and would be happy to draw your name for one of the monthly prizes!! Our other ongoing fundraisers are Admazing Coupon Books (available until Oct 30th) and Lovable Labels (www.patrick.lovablelabels.ca). Proceeds from our fundraising efforts are vital to continue programs and events such as Accelerated Reading (AR), field trips, and many other curriculum based activities.

CCT delivers universal supports around mental wellness to students, staff and families within Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education in collaboration with many community agencies. The mandate of MHCB is the promotion of positive mental health and prevention and mental illness through the universal supports offered at schools and in the community. The MHCB initiative is with funded by Alberta Health and led by Alberta Health Services (AHS) Provincial Addiction and Mental Health. My name is Ashley Fisher and I am the CCT Wellness Facilitator for Notre Dame Academy, St. Louis and St. Patrick’s school. You will see me around the school helping out wherever I can to provide positive Mental Health services to students and staff through presentations and activities in the classroom! In my free time I love spending time with family, friends and going to yoga!

Our notification provider, SchoolMessenger, uses a true SMS protocol developed by the telecommunications industry specifically for mass text messaging, referred to as “short code” texting. This method is fast, secure and highly reliable because it is strictly regulated by the wireless carriers and only allows access to approved providers. If you’ve ever sent a text vote for a TV show to a number like 46999, you have used short code texting. *Terms and Conditions – Message frequency varies. Standard message and data rates may apply.
