23 April 2014 Dear Resident Closure of Garden Halls The Garden Halls are due to close for a major refurbishment in June 2014. The modernisation will take just over two years and, while it will be a tight deadline, we are planning to reopen the Halls in time for the autumn term in 2016. The new halls will be larger (an additional 187 beds) and they will be fitted out to a high specification making them the most up-to-date and comfortable student halls in central London providing affordable accommodation for future generations of students of the University of London. Why am I writing to you? Unfortunately, to achieve the tight deadlines it will be necessary to close Hughes Parry Hall, Canterbury and th Commonwealth Halls on Saturday 14 June, and therefore we must bring forward your summer move. I understand how difficult this news may be to you and I regret the inconvenience and disruption that it will cause, especially the small minority of you who will still have exams to complete. Options available to you Mitigating the impact to students is our top priority, and we have developed two options that we hope will minimise the disruption to you: 1.

To take up your summer extension as previously agreed, however bringing the date of move forward to th 14 June.

2.

If you would prefer to terminate your contract early and not take up your summer extension, you may do th this any time between 1 and 14 June and any monies paid for the remaining period will be refunded along with your deposit.

So that we can ensure that all arrangements are confirmed as soon as possible, I would ask you to complete and nd return the below slip no later than 5pm on Friday 2 May, stating whether you would like to move to your new th Hall on 14 June or to terminate your contract early. These can be emailed to [email protected] or returned by hand to the Hall Office at Hughes Parry Hall. We believe that the options above will meet everyone’s needs, but priority will be given to students who will have th not completed their final exams by 14 June. Once again I would like to apologise on behalf of the University for any inconvenience this will cause you. Yours sincerely David Stephens Head of Residential Accommodation

I acknowledge receipt of this letter and can confirm that: th
