Private Firm Takes Public Position Protem Partners, LLC Advocates for LGBT Employment & Consumer Protections in Its Home State of Pennsylvania HARRISBURG, PA - In the coming days, Protem's founder and principal, John Brady, will be seeking audience with members of the Delaware County legislative delegation both in the district and in Harrisburg to discuss legislation that would prohibit employment discrimination with regard to LGBT status. Brady plans to share his support, rationale as a small business founder, and his personal interest as a resident of the county in seeing LGBT persons protected from discriminatory practices in hiring, employment, advancement and business services to members of both the Pennsylvania House and Senate. In several respects, Brady is not the archetype of a gay rights spokesperson; a lifelong Republican, married to a pastor, and known for his leadership of a firm that serves as a conveyer belt for growth of careers and corporations, one might not expect to see him siphoning time from business development and client service to take up a policy position that adds rules to the books. From his perspective, however, these are the exact reasons to lend his voice to those of others in the Delaware County constituency. "Economic growth and opportunity naturally seek out frictionless space for commerce just as water seeks lower ground with minimal near-term resistance," Brady said. "Over time, both commerce and water dramatically alter the landscape. In the eleven-plus years I have lived and worked in southeastern Pennsylvania, the skyline has changed dramatically as we have made it easier and more desirable to live, work, play and invest right here. With a national economy continuing steady but slow growth, instability in the Asian and European markets, and fierce competition from other policy makers eager to draw business to their states and cities, we can ill-afford distractions that create friction in the system." tapping the desk for emphasis, he continued, "Any time a group is perceived to be marginalized with regard to economic opportunity, you have inefficiency. When any group actually IS marginalized you are losing talent, you are losing innovation, you are losing customers, you are losing commerce...and you don't just lose them for one business cycle, you lose them for a generation." As a man with clients in fifteen states and offices in two major American cities, John Brady makes it clear he knows what he's talking about. Polls of business leaders, including small business owners, show strong support for legislation that would protect LGBT individuals from discrimination not only in the workplace, but in all business dealings. Despite this, Pennsylvania remains 1 of 32 states where it is lawful to fire or deny service to a person based on his/her orientation. Democrats in the Pennsylvania House are drafting House Bill 300 for introduction. Brady hopes to see his fellow Republicans on record with regard to getting any bill to the floor and passed for Governor Wolf's signature that would communicate the Commonwealth's position of inclusion to the rest of the nation. "My home and my office are each less than twelve miles from neighboring states," Brady says as he points to his view of the active runway at Philadelphia International Airport and a container ship navigating the Delaware River. As if on queue, aircraft from Lufthansa and Qatar Airways were navigating the taxiway. "I will never have too many clients. I am married to a man who speaks from the pulpit every week on the connection of ancient texts to current matters in a hurting world. This is not about religious freedom. If you are open to the public and seek to profit from engagement with the public, you don't get to pass judgment on the public. We can't afford to have anyone thinking this region is closed to their business. This is one of those moments where there happens to be public support for doing that which is both good for business and the right thing to do for individuals as private citizens. It's time we got it done."
