This project seeks to reduce housing instability for low income Milwaukee County families, especially those with children. Students will work alongside volunteer lawyers as they prepare clients for their court date by assisting with settlement negotiations, preparing written answers, and providing limited scope representation when appropriate.

The bankruptcy section of the Milwaukee Bar Association offers a pro se bankruptcy help desk at the Federal Courthouse. The help desk is staffed by volunteer attorneys who assist Chapter 7 debtors, and those considering filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, with the required paperwork. Law students, under the supervision of bankruptcy attorneys, assist individuals with completing schedules, forms, and other Chapter 7 documents.

The Clinic runs on an appointment only basis. Appointments: • 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Milwaukee County Veteran’s Service Office (VSO) • Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the House of Peace Outside of the appointments, students work on their own schedule, spending approx. 1-2 hours total to prepare for the appointments. The Public Interest Law Society (PILS) is not a pro bono opportunity. Instead, it is the organization for students who want to experience legal work in a public interest practice setting. PILS raises funds throughout the year to provide $4,000 summer fellowships for students working (350 hours) in a public interest setting during the summer. This includes opportunities with the public defender’s offices, prosecutor’s offices, civil legal aid law firms, and much more. Join the listserv, attend PILS events, and consider applying for a summer fellowship.
