RBGE Diploma in Botanical Illustration (Dip BI) – Part Time *ILA Introduction The RBGE Diploma in Botanical Illustration is an RBGE-certified course, which aims to broaden students’ observational drawing, pen and ink, and painting skills necessary to accurately represent botanical subjects of many types, suitable for public display, scientific publications or interpretation. Students will be trained in visual analysis, fundamentals of plant botany, the essentials of different plant structures and the ability to assess and produce botanically accurate drawing and painting work. The broader aspects of biodiversity and ecology will also be covered in relation to botanical illustration and we explore botanical painting in historical context, making full use of our world class facilities in the living collection, library and vast herbarium.

Option 1: Attended course Tuesdays, plus home study. Second year: Self-study with tutor support. Starting September 2014, duration two years. The Diploma is awarded to students who successfully complete three terms of study in year one and over the following twelve months produce a themed and agreed collection of artwork to an approved standard. Tutorials will be scheduled at intervals to support work in progress and teaching will be on site at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh and associated sites around Scotland.

Option 2: Distance Learning. Starting June 2014, duration three years. The Diploma will be awarded to students who successfully complete their projects through Propagate our online learning environment, and produce a themed and agreed collection of artwork to an approved standard. Online tutorials will be scheduled at intervals to support work in progress. There are also two optional study weeks which stand-alone, but are designed to support the Distance Learning modules. These will be on site at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh at the start of Year 1 and 2. Please note; Requirements from the UK Borders Agency mean only students eligible for travel to the UK, as UK or EU citizen can attend the study weeks. Full details are available in the applicants’ handbook.

This course provides an ideal opportunity to extend materia medica (knowledge of healing plants), botanising and green pharmacy (herbal remedy making) skills, to provide the perfect stepping stone for those wishing to progress on to the RBGE Diploma in Herbology or simply further existing knowledge after completing one or more of our introductory herbal programmes.

3. A green pharmacy preparation (made in class). The course concludes with an informal and collective presentation of all student work completed throughout the proceeding 10 weeks. Please note this does not qualify you to practice as a medical herbalist but does guarantee a place on our Diploma in Herbology programme.

Course Structure

Application Procedure

The RBGE Certificate in Herbology runs for 10 full days and may be studied either as a weekly course every Monday throughout the spring/summer term, or, at designated weekends from January May 2015.

Full details on costs, dates, times and study options, plus an application form, can be found in the Applicant’s Handbook which is available to download from our website www.rbge.org. uk/dipherb or by contacting the Education Department on 0131 248 2937 / education@ rbge.org.uk

Most mornings will take the form of illustrated talks and or demonstrations while the afternoon sessions will be focused on self-directed study, visits and field trips. The history of western herbal medicine will be covered through out the course with especial reference to the unique contributions of such defining figures as Galen, Culpepper and Dr. Edward Bach. Students will also learn how to design a ‘medicine wheel garden’ based

RBGE Diploma in Herbology (Dip Herb) – Part Time *ILA Introduction The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh began life as a physic garden, and this course returns to those roots. The RBGE Diploma in Herbology draws together several connected branches of botanical science and horticulture to demonstrate the remarkable therapeutic potential of plants, and the many practical applications of this knowledge. Herbology is quite literally the study of herbs, not just their medicinal properties, but their cultivation, traditional uses, ecology and conservation. As a student of Herbology at RBGE you will learn how to create an organic physic garden where you will be able to sow, nurture and harvest herbs for a bespoke selection of home herbal remedies (medicinal and delicious) while at the same time enjoying the wonderful resources of the Garden’s library, herbarium and living collections.

Course Structure Option I – Taught Course Delivered on Tuesdays across one academic year, based in the Herbology Room at RBGE. The classes, which begin in September, are divided into both theory and practical sessions, with seasonal wild forages and a selection of complementary visits. Several hours of home (self-directed) study time will be required each week. Each student is given their own herb bed within the RBGE Physic Garden to nurture throughout their year of study. Option 2 – Blended Learning A mixture of block study weeks at RBGE and online learning. Commences in September and runs over two academic years. Local students who attend the block study weeks will share an allocated herb bed within the RBGE Physic Garden for the duration of their diploma, and enjoy the added benefits of practical herbal remedy making together with wild forages out to local places of particular herbal renown and beauty.

Entry Requirements and Application Procedure No formal qualifications or prior experience are needed to enrol on this course, just a keen interest and enthusiasm for the growing and use of plants for medicinal purposes, as well as a willingness to dedicate time and effort. Please note that this course does not qualify you to practice as a medical herbalist. Full details on costs, dates, times and study options, plus an application form, can be found in the Applicant’s Handbook which is available to download from our website www.rbge.org. uk/dipherb or by contacting the Education Department on 0131 248 2937 / education@ rbge.org.uk

RBGE Diploma in Garden History Introduction Since the founding of the RBGE in 1670, garden design styles have undergone many changes and the range of plant material to grace gardens, designed landscapes and botanical collections has significantly expanded. With one of the largest living collections of plants in the world, and with such a long and rich botanical and horticultural history, it is particularly fitting that the RBGE should offer a course of study in garden history. The RBGE Diploma in Garden History in association with the Garden History Society covers a wide range of historical aspects and provides students with a rounded education in the subject as well as more in-depth knowledge of selected areas such as Italian gardens and their influence on British garden design.
