SPECIAL EVENTS & HOLIDAYS

SPECIAL EVENTS & HOLIDAYS

Subject to change. Visit www.mandelljcc.org for schedule updates.

JEWISH HOLIDAYS ROSH HASHANAH SEPT 21-22

The Jewish New Year is a festive yet solemn major holiday which begins the Ten Days of Awe. We look back at the past year, make resolutions for the next, and celebrate with family by dipping apples in honey for a sweet year.

YOM KIPPUR SEPT 30

The Day of Atonement is the holiest day of the Jewish year. It is a day of fasting, prayer, repentance and reflection, ending at sundown with the shofar (ram’s horn) blast and a break-the-fast meal with family and friends.

SUKKOT OCT. 5-11

During this harvest Festival of Booths, we recall the Israelites’ forty years of wandering to the Promised Land. We eat meals in a temporary sukkah (booth) and shake the lulav (palm and willow branches) and etrog (lemon-like fruit).

SHEMINI ATZERET/ SIMCHAT TORAH OCT. 12-13

On Shemini Atzeret (Eighth Day of Assembly), the end of Sukkot, we recite the prayer for rain. The next day, Rejoicing in the Torah, marks the joyous completion of the annual cycle of Torah (Bible) readings. Adults and children parade with Torah scrolls, eat, dance and drink together in celebration.

CHANUKAH DEC. 13-20

The eight-day Festival of Lights commemorates the rededication of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem after the successful Maccabean revolt against the Syrians. Each night, one more candle is added to the menorah (candelabra), celebrating the miracle of the oil, which lasted for eight days instead of one. Holidays begin at sundown the previous day. Holiday hours are listed on www.mandelljcc.org

Children can play in the kitchen, at the train table, participate in dress up, visit the fish, read a book in our new children’s library and play with others. Parents have the opportunity to make new connections which many times turn into longtime friendships. The Family Room provides parent/child interactive classes, enrichment classes, family programs - both Jewish and secular as well as parent support, workshops and so much more. JEWISH HUMOR

ELEMENTARY HEBREW I

Mon & Wed, 2:55–4:10 pm | Instructor: Avinoam Patt

Tues & Thurs, 2:05–3:20 pm | Instructor: Yifat Avner

Why are the Jews so funny? What is unique about Jewish humor? Why are so many comedians, satirical novelists, and film directors Jewish? In this course we will seek to answer these questions by tracing the history of Jewish humor in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We will then track the evolution and migration of Jewish humor across the European continent and on to America, where the Jewish funnyman (and woman) have transformed the cultural landscape. Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Joan Rivers, Larry David, Fran Drescher, Sarah Silverman, Jerry Seinfeld, and Amy Schumer have made American humor Jewish, and Jewish humor American. We will also look at how the Jews have used laughter as both a coping mechanism and an instrument of self-defense against pogroms, forced migrations, and even the Holocaust. The class will also feature meetings with noted Jewish humorists, stand-up comedians, and comedy writers for film/television.

Development of basic language skills, reading, writing, and speaking. This course also covers cultural material of Israel and Jewish civilization.

_____________________________________________________________

This course emphasizes Hebrew conversation, comprehension, and composition. Students will master the reading of short Hebrew literary material.

AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY Mon & Wed, 1:30–2:45 pm | Instructor: Avinoam Patt In 1654 twenty-three impoverished Jewish refugees fleeing the long arm of the Inquisition made their way from Brazil to New Amsterdam, later known as New York. From these unlikely beginnings, the American Jewish community has grown to be the largest in the world (next to Israel), and arguably, the most powerful. This class traces the historical trajectory of the creation and evolution of the American Jewish community. In particular, we focus on successive waves of immigration, the social and economic patterns that define the community, the ways in which American Jews construct their identities, and the reactions of others to Jews’ entrance into American life. _____________________________________________________________

BIBLE AND ARCHAEOLOGY: OLD TESTAMENT Mon, 5:00–7:20 pm | Instructor: Richard Freund A critical introduction to the history and literature of the Hebrew Bible in light of its setting in the ancient Near East, using the discoveries of recent scholarship, including archaeology, literary, and textual criticism. _____________________________________________________________

CONTEMPORARY STUDIES IN JEWISH CIVILIZATION: GREAT POWERS IN THE NEAR EAST Tues, 7:30–9:50 pm | Instructor: Hazza Abo Rabia _____________________________________________________________ A map of the campus is available at www.hartford.edu/about/map. ISRAEL PROGRAMMING

ISRAEL PROGRAMMING

Tali Bass

The New Mandell JCC Shlicha (Emissary) Tali Bass made aliyah from the Former Soviet Union with her parents and older sister when she was three years old. Upon arriving in Israel they settled in Be’er Sheva where some of her family was already living. After finishing elementary school, Tali attended a religious high school which had a focus on science. During Tali’s military service in the IDF, she served as a medic – first at a military checkpoint near Jerusalem, and later as the head medic of “Marva” in the education corps, a preboot camp course that is intended for exposing Jewish youth from overseas to the IDF’s history and ideology. Tali comes from the world of theater – she has a B.A. in Theater and General and Comparative Literature from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as well as two years of practical experience at the L & L Goodman Theatre and Acting School of the Negev, which ranks as one of the top performing arts universities in Israel. Tali has experience as a guide in a community theater for the elderly. She has been an instructor in a writing workshop for underprivileged youth, an actress in a puppet show for young children and in a science-based show at a museum, as well as having many roles in the theater including show manager, director’s assistant, casting and technical crew. Currently Tali lives on Kibbutz Sde Boker in the Negev and works as a teacher. This will be Tali’s first trip to Hartford and to the United States. You will see Tali: · In the Early Childhood Center teaching Hebrew and Israeli Culture to our 4 year-olds · In Kids Korner teaching running theater games and celebrating Shabbat · In the community teaching courses at JTConnect to the Hebrew High School of New England · On campus at University of Hartford Hillel and at Trinity College Hillel promoting Birthright and creating Israel programs · Working with the Israeli Young Emissaries · And more! Israel programming is funded in part by the Jewish Federation’s annual campaign.

Do you want to get to know Tali or host her for a Shabbat or holiday dinner? She would love to meet you in September! 860-231-6333, [email protected]

THAT ARTIST

Andrew Jeruss

Sun, Dec 3-Sun, Jan 7, 2018 The Chase Family Gallery is funded in part by the Jewish Federation’s annual campaign.

Sincere. Authentic. Genuine. Naïve. Natural. Fearless. Utterly without artifice. Forever young. All of these words describe Andrew Jeruss’ artwork. They also describe Andrew himself. Born in 1986, Andrew is a young man who lives life facing many challenges– profoundly deaf, visually impaired and with serious neurological deficits. Yet these challenges do not define Andrew. Andrew creates whimsical collages for the young and young at heart – his art is completely from his heart and he hopes you enjoy the results as much as he enjoys the process.
