Hello!

from our CEO Louise Procter Maio With September upon us and autumn quickly approaching, the new season represents a very exciting time across our four libraries. This time of year brings changes: along with the changes that come with new back-to-school and back-to-work routines for many members of our community, Richmond Hill Public Library is also evolving as we ensure we fulfill our promise to enrich our customers’ Connections, Choices and Community. The summer months saw the recent introduction of our new online library catalogue that makes it easier to browse our entire collection. Our new catalogue is a one-stop-shop to access all library resources, including our databases, special collections, eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMusic, eMagazines, and eVideo, in addition to all our physical items and items on order – the options are endless! We will also be introducing our iPad Kiosk at Central Library, equipped with 16 iPads that can be borrowed and used in the Library. Acting like a vending machine, scan your library card and an iPad will be dispensed for your use for three hours. Looking ahead, we’re very excited to be releasing the RHPL MagnusCard, a free app that helps empower and support people with cognitive special needs to use and enjoy our Library’s services. By downloading the app, you can watch a series of short videos on how to use the Library – from searching for a book to signing it out. This will ensure even more members of our community have access to Library resources. October marks the arrival of Canadian Library Month. During this month, libraries across Canada promote the library and the valuable role it plays in the lives of all Canadians. Ontario Public Library Week is part of Canadian Library Month, running from October 16 to 22. We hope you will join us on Tuesday, October 18 at our Open House at Central Library as we celebrate Ontario Public Library Week. Lots of exciting events are planned, so please check our website closer to the date for a full list of events and times. We hope to see you there! A new chapter for Richmond Hill Public Library is also set to begin this fall: we’re eagerly looking forward to breaking ground on the Oak Ridges Library Building Project! After many months of planning, construction of the new Library is set to begin over the coming months on the corner of Yonge Street and Regatta Avenue, with opening targeted for Fall 2017. Enjoy Richmond Hill Public Library, there is much to discover and explore at all sites. As always, keep celebrating your curiosity!

RHPL News

Richmond Hill Garden and Horticultural Society Donates Archive to Library The Richmond Hill Public Library would like to express its gratitude to the Richmond Hill Garden and Horticultural Society for its generous donation of the Society’s archives, dating back to 1914. The collection includes year books, membership lists, meeting minutes, photos and more, and offers a reflection of the Town’s history through its many achievements and contributions. It is the Library's goal to protect and preserve the donation and make it available to a larger audience.

Richmond Hill Garden and Horticultural Society President Wolfgang Dall (centre) presents the Society's archives to (left to right) Library Board Chair David Bishop, Chief Executive Officer Louise Procter Maio, Customer Experiences Director Barbara Ransom, and Central Library Manager Greg Patterson

Library customers may have also noticed a new arch by the outdoor seating area just south of the Central Library main entrance. This arch, erected by the Town of Richmond Hill in July, commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the Richmond Hill Garden and Horticultural Society.

RH Thomson Brings The World Remembers Project to RHPL

Starting in late September and running through Remembrance Day, RHPL will be participating in The World Remembers project at Central Library. Produced and coordinated by Richmond Hill native and well-known actor Robert Holmes “R.H.” Thomson, this Toronto-based global project will commemorate 597,889 names of soldiers from 12 nations who were killed in World War I in 1916. The World Remembers displays the names of those who lost their lives within a names-display installation; names of the dead are programmed to appear on the display at an exact minute, and every 15 minutes a photo taken during the war will appear on the screen. The display runs for 44 days, and approximately 13,590 names will be seen over 10 hours and 30 minutes each day. A total of 89 Richmond Hill residents served with the Canadian armed forces during the First World War. Six of these young men were killed in action. The World Remembers names-display installation will be found in two areas at Central Library: projected above the main exit doors on the ground floor, as well as on the television screen located above the Reference Desk on the third floor.

Please join us in enjoying the new arch, as we celebrate the Richmond Hill Garden and Horticultural Society and its century of fine work within our community.

More information about The World Remembers project, including all names to be commemorated on the names-display installation, can be found at www.theworldremembers.org. 3
