A Thousand-year History of Polish Jews POLIN Museum’s interactive core exhibition is a journey from the Middle Ages to the present. You will find out when Jews came to Poland and where they came from. How did Poland become – and how it ceased to be – home to the world’s biggest Jewish community? How is Jewish life beginning to flourish in Poland once again? The exhibition features historic artifacts, paintings, interactive installations, models and mul-

The Dialogues of Refugees – performance Another performance forming part of the project known as “Tumult! – Theatre at the Museum”, the aim of which is to create a theatre aimed at young audiences. This time, we invite you to a performance which shall take place on two distinct levels. The first of them are the notes of Bertold Brecht, a German who became a political refugee in the 1930s. The second level of the performance consists of contemporary images, snippets of political speeches and examples of manipulations of which our political reality consists today. The performance constitutes a form of commentary to the phenomena and events which take place in the real world. It allows the viewer to confront his or her own convictions with issues such as nationalism, media manipulation and social change brought about by migration processes. The Kronos Quartet – concert The most exceptional string quartet of our times shall present a programme designed specifically with POLIN Museum in mind, incorporating

Kolberg in a Jewish Fashion – concerts and meetings As a part of the All The World’s Mazurkas festival, we invite you for a meeting with Jewish music, immortalised in the memory of countryside musicians and in the works of Oskar Kolberg. The programme includes a meeting with witnesses of history – Stanisława Dycha and Stanisław Głaz. You will also hear new arrangements of traditional Jewish melodies. Our performers will be DiaBuBu, Ewa Grochowska and Maciej Filipczuk, Kompania Janusza Prusinowskiego and Zawołany Skład Weselny. 25 November, 6 PM, tickets: PLN 20 WORKSHOPS AND MEETINGS The History from the Inside series Workshops designed for amateur genealogists as well as those with some experience in discovering their own past. Jewish Traces in the Lublin Region Jews accounted for a significant percentage of the local population in dozens of towns and villages of the Lublin Region. Traces of this community can be found in the documents stored at the State Archive in Lublin. Based on selected documents of the Archive we will have the opportunity to become acquainted with various methods used to search for the desired information. 9 November, 6 PM, tickets: PLN 15, reservations required

Hanna Węgrzynek, Ph.D., a historian working at the POLIN Museum, will explain where they lived and what did they do. The lecture accompanies the publication of the second volume of The History of Polish Jews – Sources, entitled The Register of Jewish Citizens, Prepared in January 1778 in Warsaw. IAn introductory speech will be given by Professor Anna Michałowska-Mycielska (Historical Institute of the University of Warsaw), the editor of the series. 21 November, 7 PM, free admission The Polish and Yiddish Cinema in the Interwar Period: a Personal Union – lecture by Dr Iwona Kurz forming part of the Between Two Worlds series During the interwar period, Warsaw remained one of the most significant centres of the Yiddish-language film industry. Jewish filmmakers played a vital role in the Polish film industry during that period. What were the consequences of this “personal union” and the impact thereof on the development of both the Polish and the Jewish film industry? A lecture by Dr Iwona Kurz, director of the Institute for Polish Culture of the University of Warsaw, an expert in the field of film and visual arts. 24 November, 6 PM, free admission

The Secrets of the Central Archive of Historical Records Documentation pertaining to the origins of the Jewish community in Poland is kept at the Central Archive of Historical Records, which remains the oldest of all archives in our country. Some of the materials stored there date back to the 12th century. Other valuable records include the so-called Bug River files – documents pertaining to the Jewish and Polish communities that have once thrived in what is now Ukrainian territory. 23 November, 6 PM, tickets: PLN 15, reservations required

The Alliance of Throne and Altar – discussion forming part of the Between the Faiths series Adam Michnik, the editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza and the author of the book entitled “The Church, the Left, the Dialogue”, will examine the links between authority, the Church and religion together with Halina Bortnowska, Stanisław Krajewski and Andrzej Saramowicz. Unlike in the days gone by, authority is no longer a “gift of God”, but does it mean that religion no longer has any influence on those in power? The principal idea behind this series is to discuss contemporary issues regarding Judaism, Christianity and Islam and their mutual interactions as well as the issue of interfaith dialogue as such. 28 November, 6 PM, free admission

The Identity of a Nationalist – discussion forming part of the Problems with Identity series As nationalism and its popularity in both Poland and Europe becomes an increasingly important topic nowadays, one should perhaps try to consider the sources of this phenomenon. Our guests shall be professor Wojciech Burszta, a cultural anthropologist, and Anna Wójcik Ph. D., a lawyer; Facilitation: Anna Wacławik-Orpik from the Tok FM radio. Organisers: The POLIN Museum and the Club of Catholic Intelligentsia The discussion accompanies the showings of The Dialogues of Refugees – a performance directed by Andrzej Pakuła. 7 November, 6 PM, free admission

The Warsaw Jewish Film Festival Film screenings and meeting forming part of the 14th edition of the festival, organised by the Camera of David Foundation (WJFF.pl) of which the Museum remains the main partner. Viewers will be treated to a selection of the latest feature films and documentaries (including both short films and full-length films) which will compete for the Camera of David award in 12 categories. This year’s edition of the festival is dedicated to Martin Landau and Tad Taube. 21-27 November, free admission, tickets required for the festival opening and finale. A Thousand-year History of Polish Jews Saturdays: 11 AM and 5 PM (Polish), 3 PM (English) Sundays: 11 AM and 3:30 PM (Polish) Tickets: PLN 35, reduced – PLN 25 Jewish Holidays – themed tour of the core exhibition A tour aimed at families with children, focusing on various Jewish holidays – including, in particular, the Sukkot holiday (the Feast of Tabernacles) which takes place at the end of October this year. During the Sukkot holiday, Jews spend their time in a booth (known as the sukkah), built specifically for this purpose. During our tour you will be able to learn about the origins of this custom, the reason why Jews eat dumplings known as the kreplach during this holiday and how do celebrations which are held at the synagogue actually look like. 6 November, 2:30 PM, tickets: adults - PLN 35, concessions – PLN 25, family tickets – PLN 55 One Meeting, Two Galleries – workshops for persons with vision impairment During our walk, incorporating the use of both audio description and tactile graphics, we will explore the two first galleries of the POLIN Museum core exhibition – the “First Encounters” gallery, which tells the story of Jews who lived in Poland between the 10th and the early 16th century and the Paradisus Iudaeorum gallery, which portrays the golden age of Jewish life and culture in Poland in years 1569–1648. 24 November, 4 PM, free admission, reservations required at: [email protected]

pieces by Jewish composers written for the Quartet, including Different Trains by Steve Reich, Clouded Yellow by Michael Gordon and Darkness 9/11 by Osvaldo Golijov and Gustavo Santaolalla. 16 November, 7 PM, tickets: PLN 120 (rows A-K), PLN 100 (rows L-W) Polish Art 2.0 – performance by the POLIN Choir at Studium Teatralne The POLIN Choir is a community-based, experimental choir consisting of both professionals and amateurs which is open to everyone, including both adults and young people, senior citizens and members of various minorities residing in Warsaw. In addition to the traditional singing techniques, the choir also sought to incorporate some less orthodox means of expression, devised in the course of explorations in the fields of sound emission, rhythm and tone. The choir will present a project entitled The Sounds of the Pre-war Zamenhofa Street, prepared by the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute with the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. 19 November, 7.30 PM, free admission, Studium Teatralne, ul. Lubelska 30/32 The Young Polish Philharmonic – concert A performance by an orchestra consisting of the most gifted young musicians – students of 2nd and 3rd level music schools. This time, this ensemble, headed by the Grammy Award winner Adam Klocek, will be joined by Yigal Meltzer – the principal trumpet of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. The programme includes the Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major by Johann Nepomuk Hummel and the Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. 22 November, 6 PM, tickets: PLN 30

Sholem Aleichem: The Rhythm, the Movement and the Humour – lecture by professor Dan Miron The works of Sholem Aleichem, the author of the tale of Tevye the Dairyman, which later served as the basis for The Fiddler on the Roof – are rightly considered to be the quintessential works of Yiddish literature of the late 19th and early 20th century. The phenomenon of his writings will be discussed by professor Dan Miron, Hebrew literature professor at the University of Columbia. 9 November, 6 PM, free admission, lecture conducted in English with simultaneous translation into Polish The Living Space of the Warsaw Jews in the 18th Century – lecture by Dr Hanna Węgrzynek In the second half of the 18th century, many Jews from all around the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth have settled in Warsaw.

THE MENORAH INFOPOINT For more than 100 years, the Grzybowski square served as an exceptional meeting point for the Polish and Jewish communities. For many years, it also remained the site of a popular restaurant named Menorah. Today, the restaurant has been replaced by the Menorah InfoPoint (Menora InfoPunkt), offering information on Jewish Warsaw, cultural events and themed tours of the capital city. Our cooking workshops, dedicated to the secrets of the Jewish and Polish cuisine, will undoubtedly prove popular with all cooking enthusiasts. The guests may also visit the Charlotte Menorah bistro and try various dishes which hark back to the best Polish and Jewish culinary traditions.
