We know your time is valuable, which is why the majority of our learning courses are available online and accessible 24/7. It gives you the information you need just when you need it! Most of the online courses are fewer than 10 minutes long. You can learn at a time and pace that is convenient for you, resume where you left off, and your progress will be tracked for your records. Get started by accessing our Volunteer Learning Portal at training.girlscoutsnorcal.org. You also will find support for your troop with the Volunteer Toolkit App. Its best features include management of troop communication and girl membership. We think it’s a great way for brand new leaders and leaders of new age levels to launch into a Journey and the legacy badges. This tool will be especially helpful to Daisy leaders who are just starting out! The Volunteer Toolkit is available through the MY GS link in the upper menu of our website, www.gsnorcal.org. w

The matrix at the back of this issue will help you select events across our 19 counties from September 2017–August 2018. To get the most out of The Guide, use it alongside the online Activity Finder. The Activity Finder allows you to digitally search experiences. It’s easy to register online, access FAQs, and find detailed registration policies.

Make plans with the girls to participate in the Fall Product sale and Girl Scout Cookie sale. Doing so will help them work toward paying for the experiences themselves. Along the way, they will learn a thing or two about money management and goal setting. 5. Girls can attend events with their troop, a buddy, on their own, or with a parent or guardian. (Please note that, unless otherwise indicated, an adult chaperone must attend.) 6. Register for the event at www.gsnorcal.org/events.

Girls, use this guide as your Troop Adventure Handbook. It’s a page turner! 1. Discuss what you and your troop want to accomplish this year with your leader. 2. With your goals and interests in mind, read through The Guide with your troop and mark the experiences that stand out. 3. Select the ones that will make a perfect match with your troop plan. 4. Work with your troop to prepare a pitch for your leader about what you’d like to do and go from there! 5. Have ideas that didn’t make it to the top of the troop list? Ask your parent or guardian if they would be interested!

GIRL SCOUTING MADE EASY! THE PROGRAM

BADGES

The Girl Scout program is designed to help girls build the skills they need to thrive today and be ready for tomorrow. They do so through engaging, hands on activities that foster an environment for girls to build lasting friendships and have fun. Below are the benefits and desired outcomes girls can expect to get out of the program.

Learn something entirely new or learn something a little bit better through Girl Scout badges. Acquire practical life skills that are essential and not available at school.

Girls: • build a strong sense of themselves and have confidence in their abilities, forming positive identities. • act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others, deepening positive values. • seek challenges and take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from mistakes. • develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflicts constructively. • want to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create “action plans” to solve them. The outcomes are achieved through the collaborative work of girls and supportive adults. The well-researched processes used by Girl Scouts help prepare girls to lead projects, work cooperatively with teams and use reflection to learn from one another to solve complex challenges. The Girl Scout secret sauce used to support the outcomes for girls are Badges and Journeys, Activities and Experiences, Fall Product and Cookie sales, unique leadership opportunities, outdoor adventure, and travel.

JOURNEYS We know girls want to make a difference in the world. When girls pursue a Journey they team up with their friends to find a solution to problem and turn it into a plan. While having fun, they are building those much-needed skills for 21st century engagement.

ACTIVITIES & EXPERIENCES Girl Scouts of Northern California offers a wide range of experiences covering science, technology, engineering and math, art, outdoor skills, healthy relationships, entrepreneurship and more. This guide is great resource. Sit down with girls and select experiences that will support their interests and goals and allow them to have fun. There are also activities for families and parents/guardians will have an interest in some of our side-by-side opportunities with their favorite girl.

NUTS AND COOKIES The Girl Scout Fall Product and Cookie sales are the largest youth entrepreneurship programs in the country. With the 5 Financial Literacy skills—goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—girls build confidence and financial literacy skills. From Daisy to Ambassador, girls use these programs to earn money for service projects and fees for programs and camps. Girl experiences are powered by our Product Sales programs.

THE GIRLS The Girl Scout experience has the most impact when it is largely designed by the girls. When girls lead and are supported in making choices about what they want from their experiences, they are more engaged. Planning the year should be done in conjunction with the girls, no matter their age. Find out more about the Girl-Led experience in the Volunteer Learning Portal.

THE TROOP

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Every girl needs skills to lead her own life. Journeys and our unique program experiences offer girls the opportunity to take initiative and lead. Girls are equipped with the skillset to forge their own path and take charge of their future. Learn more about Girl Scouts Highest Awards on page

OUTDOORS AND ADVENTURE GSNorCal has more adventure partners than any other council in the US. This means more places to try new activities like kayaking, white water rafting, ropes courses, skiing (cross country and downhill) and ice skating. To learn more about high adventure activities and specific troops where girls are passionate about the outdoors, visit www.gsnorcal.org and and search "Interest Groups".

TRIPS & TRAVEL Girl Scouts love to travel! The Girl Scout Product Sales program is the nation's leading business and financial literacy program for girls and can make all the difference with financing travel dreams. When planning activities to earn the money needed for your travel budget, your first stop should be the product sales programs! You can use your rewards cards to help pay for your travel! Visit www. gsnorcal.org/cookies for additional tips on how to finance travel opportunities through our product sales programs.

destinations Girl Scout destinations are the ultimate adventure for individual girls ages 11 and older! Exciting experiences are offered each year, from the beach in San Diego, to exploring outer space (at Space Camp, but you get the idea). Imagine yourself on global adventures like surfing the tropical waters of Costa Rica or working with China’s giant pandas and domestic adventures like working on your own Hollywood Film or a canoeing expedition in the northwoods of Minnesota and Canada! 8 • THE GUIDE 2017-2018

It is through the troop experience, supported by adults, that the Girl Scout program experience comes to life, letting girls lead the way on how they experience the world. Supporting this environment for girls is easier than you think! Here are five simple steps for planning and making sure girls, at any age, take the lead: 1. Help girls identify their goal(s) for the year. What topics interest them? Do they want to do a Journey? Earn particular badges? Sell 5,000 boxes of cookies? Go camping? Go on a trip? 2. Help girls determine if the goal is meaningful and realistic. For example, completing 3 Journeys and working on the Silver Award in a year is a bit much. Help the girls spread out their plans over their 3 year Cadette experience, or pare down their ideas so that they can focus and get the most out of the things they do! 3. Help girls design the path to the goal. How frequently will you meet? Do they want to attend events as well as meet? If so, which events will help achieve the goal? Which ones will be just for fun? Are there other trips, materials or resources needed to help reach this goal or round out the troop experience? What are their goals for the fall sale and cookie sale to help finance this path? 4. Evaluate the plan with girls and families. Can they do it within budget? Does it present a new challenge for the girls? Does the troop have enough time to accomplish the goals? What can families do to help support the girls? 5. Help girls put the plan into place. Have regular checkins with the girls about where they are in the plan. Are they on a successful path? Should they shift gears and try to reach the end goal a different way? How can the path be adjusted?

THE EXPERIENCE Once girls have identified where they want to go, it’s time to start getting your tools and planning the meetings. Girl Scout participation, most often, follows the school year and should be a complement to school courses. National and local tools, in combination, provide a supportive and unique single-gendered experience outside the classroom.

THE ADULTS

ADULT TROOP SUPPORT

The adult experience in Girl Scouts, whether you are a parent, guardian or volunteer, is as a mentor, project manager and coach. Supportive adults are key to helping girls to take on challenges, build skills, increase their abilities, and begin to develop their inner passion. This looks different at each age. At younger levels, adults will play a bigger role in setting up and facilitating activities, while still allowing girls the opportunity to be curious. As girls enter middle school (Cadettes), the adult experience changes to become more of guide and mentor. Allowing girls to make mistakes, find solutions and seek help is part of the plan!

Parents and guardians can do a lot to add to the health of a troop:

THE VOLUNTEERS Girl Scout volunteers make a personal investment to support girls. They help create a fun environment that fosters lasting friendships, while introducing concepts and skills that girls want and will need for tomorrow’s challenges. Volunteers are essential for girl experiences to succeed!

THE RESOURCES Girl Scouts of Northern California has many resources to help girls, their leader, and families get the most out of their Girl Scout experience. From the website, to a troop leader, to neighborhood Girl Scout leadership, to council staff, finding support is a snap. Please visit girlscoutsnorcal. org/for-volunteers for more information or email info@ girlscoutsnorcal.org.

VOLUNTEER TOOLKIT The Volunteer Toolkit is a troop/group management system. It helps leaders with the routine tasks of renewing memberships, adding new members, as well as accessing the Journey and Badge materials. Once the troop/group has selected a Journey or badge, you can auto-plan meetings with selected content, and access resources and meeting aids. It makes planning easy and allows you to spend more time building your confidence to support girls at every stage. The toolkit is available to every Troop Leader upon the completion of member registration or renewal.

VOLUNTEER ESSENTIALS The Volunteer Essentials (VE) is a great resource for all of your questions related to Girl Scouting. We call it the encyclopedia to Girl Scout volunteering, with everything from guidelines for transporting girls to where to place badges and patches on the girls’ uniforms to learning how to report an accident or even how to reserve a Girl Scout property. This guide fully digital, searchable and printable for your convenience, and can be found at ve.girlscoutsnorcal. org. The VE is updated periodically throughout the year so you’ll have the most up-to-date information at your fingertips. Check it out!

From the 2017 Top Seller - 8,612 Boxes Would you rather buy a box of cookies or a box of hopes and dreams? Everyone who I sold cookies to said hopes and dreams. These are my dreams to sell tons of Girl Scout cookies and do business plans etc., and opportunities for other Girl Scout to learn leadership skills while selling cookies. I set goals, made a business plan and worked hard to achieve these goals. I have been a Girl Scout for the past three years. In past years, I have always gone way above my goal. Most people would call this a success, but I felt I could do better and it was not enough. So this year, I was going to aim even higher. I set my goal at 10,000 boxes. Well, 10,000 boxes in only a month or less may seem ridiculous to you, and it did to other people as well. But, it did not seem crazy to me, so I went for it. Although I did not reach my goal, I sold 8,612 boxes. I am glad that I set the goal of 10,000 boxes. By setting high standards, I achieved less than I dreamed but more than I ever imagined. Although people said I couldn’t reach my goal or come anywhere close, I wanted to make myself proud by going higher than people’s expectations. I would sit down, hour after hour on sick days, before debate class, and after rehearsals to write emails and call my friends and family. Most of my sales came from online sales. When I first heard about online sales in 2nd grade, my Girl Scout leader said it would be a little challenging for us, and we might want to hold off until next year. But I came home not knowing whether or not to try online sales for my first year of Girl Scout cookie selling. I was tired from thinking about all that hard work. When I told my mom that night about online sales she said, “No, you’ll do it, because hard work and time accomplishes goals.” Effort takes struggle, hard work and time. My advice to all Brownies and Girl Scouts is to think about what would they want to buy and how they can sell it. That way, they can have fun and develop business, sales, and leadership skills. Les Brown says, “Failure does not come in aiming too high and missing it; it comes in shooting too low and making it.” Thank you and Good Night!

Girls are Go-Getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, and Leaders! The Girl Scout Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards are amazing opportunities for girls to put their ideas to work. Not only do they hone their skills while working on Girl Scouts highest honors, the awards experiences open doors to internships, partnerships, schools, and more. The possibilities are endless. See what other girls have already done . . .

Bronze Award (4th–5th grade) Big Problem: The local community is dark with few streetlights to illuminate pedestrians, making it dangerous for drivers and people walking after dark. Big Idea: Create higher visibility of pedestrians at night. Through a product design process and prototype testing, Junior Girl Scouts created a “Safe-T-Bow”, a reflective clip on bow; and a “Flash Band”, a reflective arm or leg band. Both designs created high visibility as they reflected car headlights. They hosted a booth at a local festival to educate people on how to walk more safely at night and handed out Safe-T-Bows and Flash Bands to residents. Big result: Pedestrians are safer and easier to spot.

Silver Award (6th–8th grade)

Gold Award (9th–12th grade) Big Problem: California was going through an exceptional drought and even as it recovers, it will eventually go into drought again. When in a drought situation, water conservation and protecting the aquifers is key to survival. Big Idea: Create a simple, inexpensive, and replicable water monitor device for farmers and gardeners to adequately water crops and conserve water. California farmers produce two-thirds of the country’s fruits and nuts and over a third of the country’s vegetables. Their success and survival during drought conditions is essential to the US market. As the conditions in California progressed over the years from abnormally dry to exceptional drought, existing water sources were taxed and vital aquifers were tapped. An Ambassador Girl Scout took action by developing an inexpensive water sensor. This sensor, which is placed in the soil, connects to a reader which tells the farmers exactly how much moisture is in the soil and helps decide how much water should be given to the crops. She applied for a patent that would allow anyone to use her device but not allow anyone to market and sell it. This would make it possible for farmers anywhere facing drought conditions to easily produce and use the water sensor to conserve water. Big Result: The water sensor was successful in reducing water consumption by 25% in farms where they were used. The sensor was introduced to the world on the global platform of Oracle Open World Tech Summit.

Big Problem: Over 500,000,000 plastic straws are used in the United States each day. These are one-use items that are thrown away and become plastic pollution. Big Idea: Convince local restaurants to only give out straws upon request. Plastic is in every part of the ocean, threatening marine wildlife and our own health. Disposable plastic straws and stirrers are among the top 10 marine plastic debris found during coastal clean ups. Cadette Girl Scouts took action to reduce the plastic straw pollution in our environment. By creating a campaign presentation and taking it to local restaurant owners, the Cadettes were able to convince four restaurants to change their policies. Big Result: Reduced amount of plastic straws thrown away in their local community that would eventually end up in the water systems.

Confident. Knows how to get the job done. Responsible. Committed to making the world a better place. Empathetic. Advocate. Empowers others.
