COMPLETING THE VISION SERVING THE REGION Now is the time to build the long overdue Community Performing Arts Centre expansion to The Port Theatre. Arts and culture are thriving in our region and are becoming more recognized as important economic drivers. A studio theatre and rehearsal halls were identified as a community need in the original 1986-88 feasibility study by the Cornerstone Group. Since opening in 1998, rental clients of The Port Theatre have recognized and expressed the need for this space in ever increasing numbers. The creative community has also grown, with more groups presenting a wider variety of artistic expressions that require a smaller performance venue.

The design’s edges and angles aren’t just about aesthetics—we hope to encourage edginess in the programming at the Community Performing Arts Centre The Community Performing Arts Centre’s contemporary design by Terrence Williams, who designed the original Port Theatre, perfectly contrasts the features of the current Port Theatre. Its edges and angles are more than just an aesthetic statement—we hope to encourage edginess in the programming at the Community Performing Arts Centre: more contemporary and experimental content, more diversity and inclusion, and more artistic risk. There is value to the community and the City in creating a comprehensive arts centre that can offer alternative experiences from both local groups and touring professionals. This spring, Council unanimously passed the Cultural Plan for a Creative Nanaimo, on the heels of recognizing Cultural Vitality as the fourth pillar of sustainability. The Port Theatre’s Board of Directors, staff and 200+ volunteers are committed to meeting our community’s need, while serving the City. The need for high caliber arts venues of this size has never been greater.

THE COMMUNITY PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE FROM INCEPTION 1986-88: The studio theatre/rehearsal hall was identified as a community need in the original feasibility study by the Cornerstone Group.

1995: Design development of the rehearsal hall was postponed so as not to compromise completion of the larger performance hall.

1998: The Port Theatre opened. 1998-2008: Plans and designs for a studio theatre continued. The Port Theatre raised funds through its own capital campaign to invest in geo-technical engineering and architectural design. Technical drawings were completed in 2008.

2007: Nanaimo was named a 2008 Cultural Capital of Canada by the federal government. 2009: The Port Theatre consulted with 23 potential user groups to determine their needs for the studio theatre and rehearsal spaces.

2009-12: The Port Theatre created and implemented a series of intimate concerts and performances in the lobby and on stage, proving the popularity and demand for small-scale performance space.

“A Cultural Plan for a Creative Nanaimo” identifies the “Need for expansion of the Port Theatre to create a studio theatre/rehearsal space complex” 2012: The City of Nanaimo adopted a Corporate Strategic Plan, which identified Cultural Vitality as the fourth pillar of sustainability and the need for a cultural plan to help guide municipal commitments and decisions.

2013: The Port Theatre Society created a 5-year strategic plan to take the project through to completion.

2013: Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation completed an Economic Impact Study for the local arts and culture sector which indicated a direct, indirect and induced impact combined total of $153 million to the provincial economy in 2012.

2013: The City of Nanaimo’s “A Cultural Plan for a Creative Nanaimo” was developed with input from thousands of residents and numerous cultural organizations. It identifies the “need for expansion of the Port Theatre to create a studio theatre/rehearsal space complex.”

2014: City Council adopted the New Cultural Plan unanimously. 2014: Port Theatre undertakes Community Consultation to share information as to its intentions in building the Community Performing Arts Centre, and to gather input from users, stakeholders and the community.

ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE BUILDING PRACTICES In the building of this project, the Port Theatre will aim to achieve the equivalent of LEED gold or platinum standard. Proposed building practices include: o o o o o o o o o o o o

Use of existing stone piles previously driven, 50% fly ash in lieu of Portland cement for the concrete structure, Subjecting the building to "Night Flushing" to reduce its ambient temperature, A high volume, low velocity ventilation heating/cooling system to insure a quiet, clean, energy-efficient interior environment, High performance windows and an improved building envelope, including a green roof, to further reduce thermal gain, heat loss and improve acoustical isolation, Day lighting strategies to improve the indoor environment (not usually experienced in theatres) and reduce electrical energy consumption, Energy-efficient LED lighting for the whole interior including theatre/stage house, dressing rooms and offices, Renewable Energy options incorporated in the roof structure allowing for hot water solar collectors and photo voltaic panels, Low volume dual flush toilets and waterless urinals in washrooms and dressing areas, Low VOC materials throughout the theatre, Use of local materials wherever possible, An aggressive recycling program to accommodate stage and audience waste.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? 1. More diverse programming possibilities by and for the community

2. Enhanced services in the promotion of local culture

• 250+ new events each year in an intimate and innovative performance space suitable for all audiences, including families and youth. • The studio theatre’s flexible seating system has multiple configurations for audiences of 50-220, while rehearsal halls provide alternative performance space. •More access to diverse national and international touring professionals. • Encouraging more local production from amateur and professional companies. • Suitable space for workshops, master classes and educational opportunities. • Enhanced ability to express, preserve, develop and promote local and regional cultural heritage.

3. Increased capacity to reach new audiences

• More opportunity for local, regional and national artists from all disciplines to attract new audiences of all ages and interests.

4. Creation of critical mass within the Arts District

• Centralized density and increased economic activity in the downtown core with 250 or more events annually and an average of 200 patrons per event. • Animation of Diana Krall plaza, identified as a need in the Nanaimo Cultural Plan, would be largely resolved with lobby access from the plaza.

5. Nurturing arts professionals within the community

• Increased arts and culture activity will allow for arts professionals to thrive, allow for creation of more arts-related positions throughout the region, and create more opportunities for students coming out of relevant programs at VIU.

6. Additional space to accommodate current programming and needs at the Port Theatre

7. An exciting project for Canada’s 150th birthday

8. Naming opportunity for the City or a corporate partner

9. Shared management, technology and services

• Rehearsal halls will create holding areas for large-scale events taking place on the main stage, including graduations and convocations, dance school events, and companies with a large number of performers. • Availability of rehearsal space will allow touring companies to relocate rehearsals from the large stage to ensure more efficient use of stage time.

• The Community Performing Arts Centre would be an excellent local and th regional project to mark Canada’s 150 birthday celebration in 2017.

• The Port Theatre has had many successes with naming sponsorships and looks forward to working in conjunction with the City of Nanaimo to continue fostering this type of corporate partnership. • Maximum efficiencies by having one management team with the ability to share equipment, office systems, staff and resources. • Cost savings by sharing existing infrastructure including theatrical equipment, service and maintenance contracts, heating, cooling and power.
