Happy New Year Happy New Year to all our colleagues and external partners. We have returned from the festive period fully revitalised and refreshed to get into some scholarly activity to improve the quality of healthcare during this semester.

Practicum Update

We will be presenting a poster of our work on the Practicum at the International Forum on Quality and Safety in London later this year. We are currently testing use of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Practicum, an online course, which ‘walks’ students through conducting a small QI project. Student nurses are currently an untapped resource in QI practice. Some points from our learning so far: We resolved issues of accessibility for staff who have not completed the course prerequisites  We have created specific guidance notes for students  Students still generally think ‘too big’  Mentors will need information and support We have had 20 student volunteers from across our three campuses willing to test out the Practicum during their current third year semester. We will let you know how they get on.

Making a Difference: We were delighted to hear that students who have completed the MSc Quality Improvement module are continuing to make real improvements in practice. Lesley Blaikie, NHS Highland, completed a QI dissertation aiming to improve medication safety in children with cystic fibrosis. Measuring her improvement over time highlighted that the minor changes she had made did not translate into sustainable change. Lesley then had the idea of including a ‘forcing function’ within their electronic prescriptions which would prevent discharge prescriptions being completed until the weight field was completed. NHS Highland funded the IT developments necessary to create the mandatory weight field, which will improve medication safety for all children being discharged from hospital in NHS Highland.
