Major research facilities in the departments
The focused research areas of the faculty members of the department are development of new chemical entities for the treatment of cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis, inflammation, and hypertension. The department is successful in getting financial support from various funding agencies like DBT, DST, AICTE and ICMR. The department has necessary infrastructure to carry out the research work and faculty members are actively engaged in research in collaboration with sister departments of the college. MAHE has purchased full-fledged Schrodinger software which includes Biological suite as well as Material suite. Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry will be signing MoU with Schrodinger for the establishment of Centre for Molecular simulations which is one of its kind MoU being signed by Schrodinger with any academic institute in India. Faculty members, research scholars and postgraduate students will be trained in the area of molecular simulations. A four day training program was conducted by Schrodinger application scientists in the month of October 2017. Further training programs are also in the pipeline. Certificate program in Drug Discovery will also be introduced by the department soon. Also a workshop in the area of Drug Discovery will be organized for the benefit of faculty members and PG students of sister institutions. Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry has embarked upon an ambitious project of developing new chemical entities for diseases like cancer, infectious diseases, metabolic disorders. The study will be carried out in the Molecular Simulation Centre to design new chemical entities. DRILS and MAHE in principle have agreed to develop jointly. New chemical entities and MOU will be signed in the near future.

The Department of Pharmacology, one of the core departments of MCOPS, is actively involved in post-graduate teaching and research. Ably aided by a committed faculty and supported by a robust infrastructure, the department has been imparting quality education in pharmacology at the undergraduate (B Pharm), post graduate (M Pharm) and doctoral levels. The laboratories are well equipped with some very sophisticated instruments. A fully air-conditioned animal house (Central Animal Research Facility) supplies the animals for all experimentation. The research output from the department has been impressive, which has helped it secure further financial assistance from funding agencies like DST, DBT and AICTE. The course content for MPharm programme in pharmacology has Advanced Pharmacology, Pharmacological and Toxicological Screening Methods, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology, Principles of Drug Discovery and Clinical Research and Pharmacovigilance. The department also offers some of the specialized elective courses such as Research Methodology and Biostatistics, Cancer Biology, Free Radical Biology and Medicine and Screening methods for drug development for postgraduate students. The practical work for the students is a wholesome mix of traditional pharmacology and modern research techniques. The students become well acquainted with the handling of experimental animals and use of sophisticated instruments. Hence they find it easy to take up challenging work in industries when the opportunities arise. The department has some thrust areas of research. These include screening of molecules for neurological disorders, cancer, diabetes, dyslipidemia and wound repair. A number of research publications come out of the department every year in reputed national and international journals. There have been a number of interactions with industries such as Ocius Life Science, Quintiles, Syngene, Biocon, Paraxel, Dr. Reddy‟s in the form of execution of project work as well as placement. Another facet of the department‟s achievement has been the tie-up in research it established with Griffith University, Australia. Currently

Pharmacognosy is probably the oldest of the modern sciences that involves the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of natural drugs, including the search for new drugs from natural sources. The subject is one of the core branches in the pharmacy curriculum and therefore found an important niche in the Manipal College of Pharmaceutical sciences as a coveted department. The department enjoys the reputation of being one of the most sophisticated and well equipped department in the country. It is accredited by all the major regulatory bodies in India. The department was established in 1971. The strength of the department lies in its modern labs, sophisticated instruments and high quality research output. The department has produced about 160 post graduates and 16 PhD scholars who are enjoying impressive positions in industry and academia. About 300 publications in the journal of national and international repute with good impact factor testify the quality research output of the department. Academic credibility of the department of Pharmacognosy is envisaged by its changing curriculum to meet the current requirements of pharmaceutical Industry. The department offers extensive training in all aspects of natural products including latest developments in the scientific field. Herbal product development, drug discovery & development from natural products, development of nutraceuticals, dietary supplements and cosmeceuticals, herbal IPR and herbal drugs patenting are the focused key areas of the department. The alumni of our department and their positions in the industry and academia speak about the employability of our students.
