April 1, 2016 Dear RHS parents and students, As you may know, on February 3, 2016, Senate Bill 880 became law, delaying the Keystone graduation requirement for two years. Students in the classes of 2017 and 2018 are no longer required to show proficiency on the Keystone Exams in order to receive a diploma, but are still required to take each of the three Keystone exams at least once. Students in the classes of 2019 and below still fall under the old requirements and are still required by PDE to take and pass the Keystone exams in order to graduate. Districts are also required to offer remediation. Keystone courses will be offered in Biology, Algebra I, and Literature next year. Sophomores and juniors can elect to take Keystone courses if they were not proficient on a particular exam, although taking these courses are not required for 10th or 11th graders. Any freshman who does not score proficient on the Biology or Algebra I Keystone exam, and any 8th grader who does not score proficient on the Algebra I Keystone exam will be scheduled for the corresponding Keystone remediation course. Beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, PDE requires that the information on a student transcript must include the highest level demonstrated by that student on the associated Keystone exam or project-based assessment. Students who do not score proficient on a Keystone exam maintain the option of retaking the exam a second time. If a student does not score proficient after a second attempt, the student will have the option of the completing a project based assessment (PBA) in place of retaking the exam. Successful completion of a PBA counts as a proficient score for the module. We recognize that all of this information can feel overwhelming. Below is a brief summary of this information.
