Home Reading Tips Reading is one of the most important things you can do with your child. Research shows that children who read every day for 20 minutes do better in school. Their grades are better, their confidence is greater and you play a vital role in helping them become better readers.

So what can you do?

Listen to me to me with me Here are some ways you can help your child with reading at home each night.

Tip 1: Pick the right book! Find books that interest your child and are at their reading level. Use the 5 finger rule! Pick one page in the book. Ask your child to read the page. Put up one finger for each word your child struggles with or doesn’t know. Use this chart: 0-1 Fingers: Might be too easy 2-3 Fingers: Might be a perfect fit 4-5 Fingers: Might be too hard

Tip 2: Make it fun! Create a comfy reading spot Read to your child in a funny voice or character (read like a giant or a robot) Check out books from your library Ask your child to “read” signs when you are in the car Read bedtime stories Read comics, magazines, cookbooks Set up a reading audience (family members or toys) © 2016 Teaching Superkids

Tips 3: Are they stuck? Ask your child to sound it out! Ask your child to skip over words they don’t know! Ask them to go back to the beginning and re-read the sentence.

Ask your child to break the word into parts! Ask can you find any piece that you can sound out Ask your child what makes sense in the story? Do the pictures give you any clues?

Tips 4: Fluency Read a sentence with expression and have your child repeat it. Take turns reading a sentence or page. Model how the words should sound. Encourage them not to read too fast or too slow. Pause at the end of sentences and use correct expression based on the ending punctuation marks. Re-read books again and again!

Tips 5: Ask Questions What do YOU think is going to happen next?

Did YOU like this story? Why or why not?

What was YOUR favorite part? Why?

Would YOU recommend this story to a friend?

Tips 6: Check for understanding Look at the cover of the book make a prediction about the story. Make connections to the text being read. Ask your child if the book reminds them of another story, an event in their life or even a movie. Ask them to identify any problems that occurred in the story. Ask them to identify the characters of the story. Ask questions as you read the story. After you read ask them to share important events from the book. © 2016 Teaching Superkids
