Reflection on Trip to Italy Larry Chapoy "I have just returned from Italy and a series of meetings with my network there and prospective clients. During my time there and endless discussions of opportunities, I was struck by a number of things: The active programs to promote commercial activities abroad from the national and regional government entities. The assistance appears to be real, both financial and logistical. The Embassies and Consulates play a very visible role in providing such assistance. Their involvement abroad seems to be different: In China they are involved in infrastructure projects, developing tax-free incentive zones with the Chinese and providing services to the Chinese. That obviously goes well beyond contract manufacturing and outsourcing to take advantage of lower costs, purchasing inexpensive machine tools for importation and using low cost commodity raw materials. Historical ties with Romania and the Adriatic countries give them an advantage Libya has been a kind of zone of influence since the Romans even during the Gaddafi regime. Obviously, that has slowed down by recent chaos, but that too will pass and they will be there for rebuilding paid for by oil money. The Iran thaw. This is also a historical connection: Roman Empire/Persian Empire had lively contact, Marco Polo, Silk Road etc. As Internationalists, it gives us something to think about. Comments are welcome.
