Starr County Businessman to fill Region One ESC Unexpired Seat Mr. Ricardo Gutierrez of Rio Grande City was sworn in as the newest member of the Region One Education Service Center Board of Directors. The swearing-in ceremony took place during the regular called meeting of the Region One ESC Board of Directors on Thursday, August 26, 2010. Gutierrez was selected from a pool of applicants to fill the unexpired Place 2 seat representing Jim Hogg, Starr, and Zapata counties left vacant earlier this year. Mr. Ricardo Gutierrez of Rio Grande City will serve on the Board of Directors until the term is up for election in June 2011. “We are pleased that Mr. Gutierrez will be joining the Region One ESC Board of Directors. We are confident that the expertise and experience that he will bring to the table will help impact decisions that will support educational opportunities within our region,” said Jack Damron, Region One ESC Executive Director. As a Board Member, Mr. Gutierrez said that his goal will be to not only affect the education of students of today, but to enhance the future of the entire region, “I want to see our Region’s youth excel by furthering their educational level so they may become successful leaders in their communities.” Mr. Gutierrez is a President and Owner of Gutierrez Oil Company. He has served on various Boards of Education entities including service as a member of the Texas State Technical College Systems Board (1980-1985), member of the Board of Directors, University Systems of South Texas (1974-1988) and chairperson of that board from 1979 to 1988, and is heavily involved in community organizations. The Place 2 seat had been occupied by Mr. Noe R. Sanchez of Rio Grande City for the past 23 years. Sanchez passed away earlier this year. The Region One Education Service Center is one of twenty regional service centers in Texas. The role of the education service center is to assist school districts and charter schools improve student performance, assist districts to operate more efficiently and economically, and to implement initiatives assigned by the Texas Legislature or the Commissioner of Education. The Region One ESC area serves over 399,000 students and encompasses a seven county area including Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Starr, Webb, Willacy and Zapata counties. #
