Regional Monthly Dashboard August 2017 PROTECTION The number of Syrian refugees in the region stood at 5.16 million at the end of August 2017. There are now almost 3 million Syrian refugees registered refugees in Turkey, over 1 million in Lebanon, some 660,000 in Jordan, almost 245,000 in Iraq and above 120,000 in Egypt, indicating the generosity of host countries across the region. Highlights of the Protection Sector across the region in August include: In Egypt, multi-sectoral case management services assisted 959 children, adolescents and youth during August. The number of newly registered Syrian unaccompanied children continues to rise, with 21 registered during the reporting period. An inter-agency taskforce convened to specifically address the protection gaps for this group of children and identify additional support each organization can provide to ensure timely assistance and mitigate protection risks. A total of 133 staff of governmental and non-governmental entities were trained on child protection in Alexandria, Damietta and Greater Cairo. In Iraq, child protection prevention and response activities continued to be provided in and out of camps. Capacity building activities for community groups and the Department of Social Affairs were implemented within the sustainable framework for child protection programs for refugees in Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The Youth Committee in Sulaymaniyah wrote a play on themes such as child marriage and gender discrimination with the aim of addressing and prompting debate on different social issues. The committee exhibited the play during its tour of different areas within the governorate.
