Workshops for parents/guardians and educators with special guest Lawrence Cohen, PhD Join Lawrence Cohen, PhD in exploring a bold new way to nurture close connections, solve behavior problems and encourage children’s confidence. Cohen is a licensed psychologist specializing in children’s play and play therapy and is the author of the award winning book Playful Parenting. He has authored numerous published articles in professional journals and popular magazines and is co-author of The Art of Roughhousing, Best Friends Worst Enemies and Mom, They’re Teasing Me.

Minds in Motion™ Shepaug – Important Notes for Attendees • Space is limited. Register early to secure your spot! • All students in Grades K-8 are encouraged to register. For assistance with special needs or financial aid, please email [email protected]. • Please choose workshops from your grade group. The workshops are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Students must make at least 4 choices. Every effort will be made to give students their preference. • You will be notified if there is a problem, and your enrollment will be refunded if there is no space. Registrations can be mailed to the the address shown on the form or completed online at www.ctgifted.org. • Parents are required to stay on site. Adult keynote, adult workshops and a vendor exhibit area are available for all parents free of charge. Educators are welcome to register free of charge as well. Keynote address and adult workshops open to all adults even if your child is not attending the program. Pre-registration is required for all adults to ensure ample seating is available for all. • Check In by 12:30 or risk forfeiting your child’s workshop assignment.

1) Dance the Day Away. Perfect for students interested in beginning dance training. Have fun discovering ways you can turn, jump and flip through dance themed games and music.

7) Catch the Geocache Bug. Get involved in the world’s biggest treasure hunt as you learn how to create your own cache and using GPS, find a cache located at this event.

14) Make Your Own TV Show. Go on location in our mobile studio and try your hand at working in TV. This three hour adventure counts as two workshops.

2) Making Marvelous Mobiles. Create beautiful artistic mobiles while exploring numerous ways to balance objects. Learn how something in motion can always be balanced.

8) Learn the Core of Parkour. Running, jumping, landing, rolling safely are at the heart of Parkour. Learn the fundamentals and then put them together for an action packed sequence.

15) Kids Favorite Foods. Join us in the kitchen for a hands on workshop in where you’ll learn the art of making Pancakes, One-Pot Pasta and a variety of Potato dishes.

3) Hand Drumming. Join us for a hands on experience where everyone has an active part to play in bringing the unique textures and dynamics of the drum to life through rhythmic improvisations. Drums provided.

9) Power Up Your Engineering Skills. Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering and architecture using LEGO® blocks. Design and build like never before and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment.

16) Challenge Accepted. Can your team build a vehicle that’s also an instrument? Join us as we challenge you to collaborate, problem solve and come up with the best solution possible to unique challenges.

4) Yoga Stories. Introducing a yoga class that explores literary elements of book characters through yoga stretching and poses. Picture books, songs and chats will fuel the fun.

10) Make Your Own Body Scrub. Join an acclaimed herbalist for an interactive workshop. Created two 8-ounce scrubs using a combination of everyday and herbal ingredients.

5) Join the Circus. Explore your own strength, coordination and flexibility through circus apparatus and master the Chinese yo-yo, spinning plates, hula hoops and juggling.

19) Can You Tie a Fly? Get hooked on fly fishing by learning the art of fly tying using the tools and materials found in most fly fisher’s studios.

CHARTER/COMMUNITY TELEVISION (CTV192) is a community based initiative designed to provide practical knowledge of community television production. The mobile CTV192 truck engages students interested in learning studio production, field and mobile truck production, editing, lighting and sound for video. By creating programming students become familiar with basic production theory and operation. DESTINATION IMAGINATION is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament. Their most recent classes include Herbal Body Scrubs, Medicinal Chocolate Truffles, Elderberry Syrup, Fire Cider, Herbal Reed Diffusers, and Smudge Sticks. Each workshop includes an historic and herbal overview, along with the hands-on creation of a medicinal concoction. Everyone leaves with knowledge, a creation, and new friendships. Johnson is a member of the men's USA Taekwon-Do team and wll be competing in the 2017 world championships in Argentina. He is a third degree black belt and has studied martial arts for over 20 years. He has done parkour, freerunning and tricking for 13 years and has been in film/tv for his skill set. He teaches at Elite Gymnastics Center, New Milford, CT. PLAYWELL TEKNOLOGIES founded by Tim Bowen in 1997. Introduced to the LEGO® building system in 1996 and recognizing it to be both a popular play medium and a tremendous learning medium, Tim began to develop projects which drew on his professional experience and combined the elements of fun, challenge, and learning. He began operating a summer camp program in 1997, followed by after school enrichment classes in 1998. SUZANNE CHAMLIN RICHER is Associate Professor of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University. Through the process of observation, Chamlin Richer draws closer to nature and seeing. Her current work is based on landscapes both real and imagined. In oil, watercolor, as well as ink and ink washes, she work directly on site, from memory, and sketches. In Drawing and Painting she develops a connection with her materials to articulate what she sees. THE SILO COOKING SCHOOL AT HUNT HILL FARM, NEW MILFORD, CT is the first recreational cooking school in Connecticut. Nestled in a picturesque barn in the Litchfield Hills, it is a gourmet getaway! In addition to offering adult classes, The Silo offers children’s classes and well-attended summer sessions. THRIVE MOVEMENT STUDIO, HARWINTON, CT is a new studio that opened in the Summer of 2014. It is the result of many years of work. Its founders have traveled the Americas performing and learning the circus arts of uni-cycling, clowning, improvisational and acrobatic skills. With a passion for helping gifted children and their families, Augustyn travels around the state working with parents, teachers, administrators, and others to help them meet the needs of gifted children. Help your kids prepare for the future by learning to support your child develop social skills, creativity and critical thinking through fun, engaging, and creative projects. With a diverse background that ranges from EPCOT and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, to the corrections system and John Hopkins University, Woodard is currently pursuing a Doctorate degree in Education that focuses on supporting the socio-emotional development of students through project based learning initiatives. Kate Maupin, M.A. Author, Speaker, Gifted Education Consultant Eliminating Power Struggles This session outlines how and why some kids are “gifted” at manipulation and targets underlying causes such as fear, boredom, anger, and even creativity. This workshop helps parents and teachers prevent struggles before they begin by identifying causes and offering structured supports and tools for more positive outcomes. Maupin is the owner of Fulfilling Potential: Educational Consultation, which focuses on the needs of bright and gifted learners. Her book, Cheating, Dishonesty & Manipulation: Why Bright Kids Do It, was the winner of the 2016 Next Generation Independent Book Awards.
