REGISTRAR OF VOTERS’ OFFICE TO CONDUCT AUTOMATIC RECOUNTS FOLLOWING NOVEMBER 8 ELECTION Automatic Recounts to Occur on Ten Contests SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters’ Office will conduct automatic recounts on ten contests based on unofficial semi-final results following the tabulation of polling place, provisional, and Vote by Mail ballots from the November 8, 2016 Presidential General Election. The ten contests that will automatically be recounted are Governing Board Member – Cupertino Union School District; Governing Board Member – Gilroy Unified School District; Governing Board Member – Palo Alto Unified School District; Council Member – City of Gilroy; Council Member – City of Los Altos; Council Member – City of Monte Sereno; Council Member (District 8) – City of San Jose; Council Member – Town of Los Altos Hills; Police Chief – City of Santa Clara; and Measure Y – San Jose Unified School District. Per the direction of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, the following conditions are required in order to trigger an automatic recount: -

The district in which the contest is being held is entirely within the boundaries of Santa Clara County; The contest is not for any state or federal office; and The margin of victory for the candidate or measure is within 0.5% of the total number of ballots cast or 25 votes.

For the purposes of determining whether to conduct an automatic recount, the margin of victory refers to the difference between winning and losing candidates or passing and failing measures. The automatic recounts will begin on Monday, November 28, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. at the Registrar of Voters’ Office. Over 150 staff members will work on the automatic recounts from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., seven days a week, until all of the recounts have been completed. The recounts are expected to last between seven and eight days; a schedule by contest is available at www.sccvote.org. All costs incurred in the automatic recounts will be paid for by Santa Clara County.

The final results for the November 8, 2016 Presidential General Election will be certified by the Registrar of Voters on December 8, 2016 after all manual recounts and audits have been completed, as required by state law. The certified results will be posted online at www.sccvote.org. The recounts are being conducted prior to certification of the election, but after all polling place, provisional, and Vote by Mail ballots have been counted. The Registrar of Voters’ Office is offering increased availability throughout the recount for media questions, taping and interviews. Our expanded schedule is shown below. Please note that it is subject to change, although we will make every effort to accommodate media requests during this time.
