CAMPS OVERVIEW 13

Rebecca Passarello Children’s Fine Art Program Coordinator “Hi! I am Rebecca Passarello. I schedule the Children’s Fine Art classes at the Art Center and this is my second year in this position. Before working at the Art Center, I was a community volunteer while my 3 kids (now teens) were growing up. Prior to that, I worked in the high-tech field as an engineer. Working at the Art Center has been an awesome career change for me. The space is beautiful, my peers are amazing and the challenge of balancing the community’s demand for classes with our available classrooms and art instructors keeps me on my toes. Of course, it’s always fun to see the amazing artwork our students create. In my free time, I enjoy watching my kids play their various sports, playing tennis with friends and hiking and camping with my family. I’m looking forward to another busy summer with all of our creative campers!”

ART CAMPS FOR KIDS WEEK 1: JUNE 12-16 Printmaking for Young Artists

Puppeteering

Design, carve, print, repeat! Create multiple original fine-art prints from blocks and plates using intaglio, relief, and Mono printmaking techniques. Class participants will learn to transfer drawings, create a matrix, and print by hand and with a press using non-toxic inks, yielding a variety of effects. Camp culminates with an exhibition and exchange portfolio in which students display and trade their works of art.

A creative approach to puppetry. Starting with traditional forms from all over the world, we’ll move into the 21st century using 3-D puppets, innovative modeling and lighting techniques. Kids will gain technical expertise and have lots of fun. We’ll plan and stage a puppet show and perform it on the last day of camp. Instructor: Paulina Shapona

THEATREWORKS An East/West Comic Drama

Calligraphy By Velina Hasu Houston Directed by Leslie Martinson Regional Premiere Two continents, two cultures, two estranged sisters, and the two cousins determined to bridge the gap between them—all are boldly calligraphed in this international comic drama set in Los Angeles and Tokyo, past and present. East and West collide as biracial American Hiromi and Japanese free spirit Sayuri confront tradition, prejudice, and their heritage of filial duty in one final attempt to reunite their aging parents.

“Intimate, sensitive…the emotional stakes are high.” —Los Angeles Times March 8 – April 2, 2017 Lucie Stern Theatre, Palo Alto

Salome by Richard Strauss Conductor: José Luis Moscovich Stage Director: Ragnar Conde Co-production with Escenia Ensemble of Mexico City Based on the Oscar Wilde play, after the biblical story, the young John the Baptist has been imprisoned by the King of Judea for fomenting unrest with his new ideas. The King’s teenaged stepdaughter, Salome, becomes infatuated with the prophet at first sight, but he condemns her as part of a corrupt class. When the King begs Salome to dance and offers to reward her richly, she agrees. Once she’s danced, she demands and eventually gets John’s head on a platter. She declares her love to the head and then kisses his lips, before being killed on the King’s orders. A powerful story, set to Strauss’ tremendous score, presented with an expanded orchestra and an international cast. Presented in German, with projected English titles. May 26 (8pm), May 28 (2pm), June 3 (8pm) and June 4 (2pm), 2017 Lucie Stern Theatre, Palo Alto

WEST BAY OPERA The Triptych (Il tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi) (Il trittico) by Giacomo Puccini Conductor: José Luis Moscovich Three short operas in one evening all dealing with a death that has been concealed. In Il tabarro (the cloak), the owner of a freighter discovers that his wife has been having an affair with a younger stevador. He kills the young man and hides him in his cloak, to surprise his wife. In Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) a young woman is sent to a convent for having had a baby out of wedlock. When her aunt visits her, she finds out about the boy’s untimely death and decides to commit suicide. In Gianni Schicchi, a hilarious comedy, a clever man impersonates a dead old man in order to change the written will and give himself most of the inheritance. A fascinating evening of opera and some of Puccini’s most beautiful music. Presented in Italian, with projected English titles.

Story Acting Using familiar stories, improvisation, and creative movement, children leap into action as story characters! Post Camp for JMZ Camps

Science Camp Assistant Program

Join us after camp for more fun activities! Post campers will create art, swim and play at Rinconada Park. Please make sure that the Post Camp you are signing up for matches the dates of your camp session. Enrollment in this camp is limited to campers enrolled in JMZ science camps for students exiting Grades Kinder through 4th (Bay Camp, Camp Kinetic, Camp Oceana, Jurassic Camp, Wildlife Camp, and Zoo Camp). Post Camp will be held at the Girl Scout House next to the Junior Museum and Zoo. Children not picked up on time will be charged $30/half-hour (or fraction of the half-hour). Registration for Post Camp will be available until 5:00 on the Thursday before camp starts.

Students exiting 7th through 10th grades can gain experience teaching science and working with kids! SCAs help JMZ Camp staff prepare and run camp activities. This is a great opportunity to learn more science and investigate future work as a science camp counselor. High school students may also apply the hours they spend in this program toward their community service graduation requirement. DO NOT REGISTER THROUGH THE DRAW! Acceptance into this job training program is not guaranteed. To apply, complete and submit a SCA application by March 18th and interviews will be scheduled. You may obtain an application at the Junior Museum & Zoo, by e-mailing alex.hamilton@ cityofpaloalto.org, or by calling 329-2111. Interviews will be scheduled and conducted during the month of April. Course dates are for the entire summer. Schedules will be set on an individual basis, but a 2-WEEK MINIMUM is required (2 consecutive weeks). Fees listed are for a 2-week session, and will be pro-rated for Tuesday, July 4th.

THE

Developmental assets Promotes Healthy Children and Teens in Palo Alto JUN

Did you know that the City of Palo Alto Community Service Department, Library, and Project Safety Net all incorporate the 41 Developmental Assets in its children and teen programs? The 41 Developmental Assets are the positive values, relationships, skills, and experience that support young people to make healthy choices and thrive. Put simply, More Assets = More thriving. Here are some ways that families can incorporate Developmental Assets each month this Summer.

Safety

Asset #10: Young person feels safe at home, at school, and in the neighborhood.

Hold honest, open, and age-appropriate discussions with your children about personal safety, avoiding dangerous situations, and what to do if they feel threatened. Talk to your children about bullying, including what to do if they or their peers are being bullied.

JUL

Community Values Youth

Asset #7: Young person perceives that adults in the community value children and youth.

Many programs young people enjoy are created and maintained by the community (e.g., libraries, parks, and playgrounds). Make sure your children understand that these resources are available because the community cares about them.

AUG

Caring Neighborhood

Asset #4: Young person experiences caring neighbors.

Make an effort to get to know your neighbors, and help your children understand the importance of strong neighborhood bonds.

To learn more about the 41 Developmental Assets, please visit ProjectCornerstone.org or DevAssetsPaloAlto.org

NEW THIS SUMMER! The City of Palo Alto is excited to announce Team Sheeper Inc., a local aquatics operations and management company, as its swim lesson and summer swim camp provider. Team Sheeper has been doing what they love for the past 11 years in Menlo Park (Menlo Swim and Sport) and for many years before that in Redwood City. For the past two summers Team Sheeper has assisted Palo Alto Aquatics by providing swim lessons; and now, the official name for Palo Alto’s swim program is Palo Alto Swim and Sport. There will be some changes with the process of registering for swim lessons and we ask that you work with us as we make this transition. Our number one goal is to provide excellent services for residents and we are here to work with you throughout the learning curve. To help with the transition, we have added two extra weeks to the Summer Aquatics registration timeline to allow everyone to get registered and ready for a fun summer ahead at Rinconada Pool! Please read through the information below and in the next few pages to learn about this exciting development.

ABOUT PALO ALTO SWIM AND SPORT Palo Alto Swim and Sport strives to build a strong and robust aquatic culture in the community. This goal starts by introducing youth to the joys of water early in their life while instilling solid swim fundamentals and providing programs that match their development. Our swim instructors are a family of professionals that are highly trained and talented. We take pride in the progress of all our students and we employ a team-approach to advance children through the learning process.

WHY THE CHANGE? The City’s goal in working with Palo Alto Swim and Sport is to provide a more stable and consistent level of service to the Learn to Swim program for the Palo Alto community and more lessons where capacity exists. Palo Alto Swim and Sport can guide families all the way from the registration process to swim school graduation. Learning to swim is an important lifetime achievement and we want the process to be an extremely positive and memorable one for every member of the family. Palo Alto Swim and Sport is committed to providing Palo Alto with a successful swim lesson and summer aquatics camp program and continue to find ways to innovate and improve our programs. We have increased flexibility to the swim lesson registration process. There is now an option to register for a lesson once per week or to sign up for a full week of focused lessons. We have expanded the swim lessons program to run from April through October. In those months, we will make more use of the children’s recreational pool at Rinconada as we transform a portion of the pool into a flexible learn-to-swim area. The water will be warmed to an inviting and comfortable temperature the entire time. Please feel free to call the Palo Alto Swim and Sport customer service office to learn more about its programs at 650-636-SWIM.

Swim School habit of swimming that becomes a way of life for children as they grow through adolescence into adulthood.

Swim School Model Palo Alto Swim and Sport lessons are hands-on and focused on giving each swimmer a strong foundation in the pool. Lessons are focused on breathing, body position and developing proper swim habits. Lessons are taught by our incredible instructors in a 5 by 10-yard area that promotes safety and technique.

Commitment to Safety

Teaching Philosophy Palo Alto Swim and Sport promotes life-long fitness, healthy habits and safety. Knowing how to swim properly at a young age builds a foundation for a long and healthy life. Our swim school works with students to develop proper technique through focused learning and goal oriented rewards. Year-round lessons instill the

Our number one priority at Palo Alto Swim and Sport is safety in and around the pool, including safety in lessons, water quality, lifeguarding and emergency preparedness. Each instructor is trained in making each lesson a safe and fun environment. All our lifeguards are certified, trained and audited to the highest standards set by the American Red Cross and YMCA. Palo Alto Swim and Sport has retained the services of a leading environmental health and safety firm to guide our company to safer practices for our customers, staff and community.

SWIM LESSONS LEVELS Waterbabies: For ages 6 months to under 3 years. Parent participation class where babies are introduced to the water through songs and games. Each game that we play together as a group can be adjusted to accommodate a parent’s comfort level and the swimming ability of the child. This is a 30-minute group class with a 6:1 ratio.

Palo Alto Swim and Sport will be offering two different options for swim lessons: weekly lessons, which are held at a consistent time one time per week beginning in April; and summer swim lessons, which are concentrated daily lessons over the course of a week during the summer months. These options are described in more detail below. The full listing of swim lesson offerings will be available online at www.PaloAltoSwim.com on February 15, 2017!

Weekly Lessons April through October Palo Alto Swim and Sport will offer weekly swim lessons. Weekly lessons are the optimum method for maintaining the focus of developing as a swimmer on a year-round basis. To learn a complex skill, and to master the physical movement patterns, consistent and continual practice is necessary. Weekly lessons allow families to understand that swimming is a year-round sport/activity and that the joys of aquatics and developing as a swimmer does not only have to be limited to the summer months. We promote keeping aquatics and swim school in the weekly family schedule much like a family would a sports team or music lessons.

Summer Session Lessons June 5 to August 18 Palo Alto Swim and Sport will offer 11 one-week sessions of swim lessons where participants receives five lessons, one per day Monday through Friday. Students will have the opportunity to move to a new level after one week if they master the skills of that level.

Water Tots: For ages 2 years old. Water Tots is a class without parent participation for students who are comfortable in the water are ready to learn the next set of swimming skills. The student to teacher ratio of 3:1 allows a small, safe learning environment to introduce fundamental water skills. This class focuses on building comfort, water safety, and skills such as: breathing, floating, bobs, jumps and, of course, fun. Swimming Principles: Children learn to be safe, independent swimmers and begin to learn proper head and body position that will lead to success in the strokes to come. Skills include floating independently on back and front, and breath control. Level 1: Designed to continue water safety skills as well as develop body position and kicks. Swimmers must be water safe and able to kick in streamline for 5 yards to pass. Level 2: Designed to continue water safety skills as well as develop a strong foundation for freestyle. Swimmers learn to kick in streamline for 10 yards, rolling onto their back for a breath. Level 3: Designed to develop a strong foundation for freestyle. Swimmers learn to kick in streamline for 10 yards with a side breath. Freestyle: Swimmers learn freestyle beginning with body position, efficient flutter kicks, freestyle arms, and side breathing. Backstroke: Swimmers continue to review and improve their freestyle while learning backstroke. They develop body position, rotation, effective kicks and backstroke arms. Breaststroke: Swimmers will begin to learn the difference between short axis and long axis strokes, with an emphasis on the importance of a proper kick and glide. Each of the four parts of breaststroke will be isolated to yield a successful breaststroke.

SUMMER AQUATICS 49

Butterfly: Students learn the importance of a full body dolphin kick and undulation, timing of kicks with pull and recovery. Lessons Advanced: Swimmers continue to refine all four strokes as well as develop more advanced techniques, including starts, turns and finishes. Lessons Elite: The goals for swimmers in the class are to become proficient in all four competitive strokes, swim terminology, and receive coaching in and out of the water.

Camp Rinconada - Swim Camp Whether just learning to swim or developing strokes, your child receives a daily, 45-minute, level-appropriate lesson from a trained Swim School instructor (ratio 4:1). A child’s swim level is assessed on the first day of camp, and campers with similar abilities are grouped together. More advanced swimmers also get a workout-style swim session in a 25-yard format to practice what they have learned. Daily hands-on lessons in small focused groups invariably lead to rapid advancement in a child’s swim skills. In addition to swim instruction, campers have daily swim-related workouts, free swim, time for land and camp games, crafts, and lunch. Your child should come home healthy-tired but able to have loads of fun the entire week!
