Transportation Research Manager Research Project Manager – Transportation

R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. is one of Canada’s largest independently owned and operated research firms with more than 70 dedicated research professionals and 100 or more part-time data collection staff members, providing quality transportation research, all across Canada. Malatest offers diverse research project opportunities in a variety of dynamic work environments with five national office locations in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton and Victoria. Currently, we are looking for an experienced Transportation Research Manager familiar with origin and destination studies and transportation analytics to join our team for the various aspects of our ongoing transportation projects and business development opportunities.

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Project requirements and hours may vary based on contracted project requirements; Flexibility to work other hours and overtime, as necessary;

Compensation: Annual salary of $75,000 to $85,000 (based on experience), plus benefits and discretionary performance based bonus opportunities.

Overview: Our Transportation Research Manager will work to support transportation research, data collection, data analysis, interpretation and reporting activities. The successful candidate will join our rapidly growing Transportation research team and act as a trusted advisor to Malatest owners and senior management on a variety of transportation research projects. Our team of consultants bring quality research and technical leadership, to represent our clients interests at all times, and to ensure successful project outcomes. The Transportation research team represents a significant area of growth within our organization. Malatest research professionals are not only Project Managers, we are Project Leaders who take a client focused approach to project and program delivery. Given the opportunity, we demonstrate knowledge and expertise on a diverse range of research projects that vary in scope and complexity. Working in this position you will plan, manage, execute and control awarded transportation research projects involving scope, budget, impact, and large volume origin and destination data, while working to ensure the successful research project completion and delivery according to Malatest project management standards. The successful candidate would bring a wealth of experience for leading research projects and a variety of skills in scope and complexity for the successful completion of transportation research. This position requires knowledge of transportation research methods, engineering principles, and effective project management execution. Duties will include, but are not limited to: 

Survey design and implementation;



Statistical, spatial, and demographic analysis;



Data collection and data management;



Research methods and Data Analysis;



Project planning & project management;



Communications and Report Writing;

R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. Key Duties & Accountability: 

Plans, manages, executes, and controls all aspects of assigned transportation projects involving scope, risk, impact and methodology, in alignment with Malatest strategy and objectives.



Leads the strategic planning of the assigned transportation projects, including defining the scope of the project in collaboration with senior management; creating business cases and work plans, determining the objectives and measurement, determining the budget, resources, and stakeholders; setting up the project schedule and research methods.



Manages and monitors transportation research projects throughout the implementation stage, executing the project according to the work plan; creating project management records and documentation; monitoring progress and financial status of the project. Anticipates and proactively manages changing priorities throughout the project life cycle.



Prepares and collaborates on the Requests for Proposals (RFP) and tender documents for transportation research project opportunities, including terms and conditions, scope of work definitions, technical requirements, specific project requirements and project schedule constraints.



Presents and reports the project progress, risks, expectations, timelines, milestones and key project metrics to the senior leadership team. Provides suggestions and recommendations to the senior leadership team regarding risk management and project delivery.



Manages cross functional project teams and stakeholders across the company. Develops and maintains a respectful and productive relationship with all stakeholders. Coordinates internal resources and third parties/vendors for the flawless execution of the project.



Manages data to ensure gathered information is current, accurate, well documented for feature datasets such as transportation routes, stops, landmarks, transit centers, facilities, land use, urban and transportation planning purposes.



Assists with origin and destination studies or surveys as a team member and assigns individual workload under close supervision in order to leverage the strengths and skills of the team for the successful completion of the research project.



Provides expert advice and recommendations on transportation project management standards, governance and procedures to continuously improve project management practices.



Provides technical guidance to Data Analysts working on assigned transportation research.

Qualifications: The competencies for this position would typically be acquired through the completion of a graduate of undergraduate degree in Transportation, Logistics, Engineering, Geography, Information Management; with previous experience or designation in project management - PMP certification. One to three years’ experience in Transportation Research is preferred; 

BSc in Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Computer Science, Transportation Planning or related field such as Economics, is required.



One to Three years of professional experience in statistical analysis, mapping, spatial analysis, computer database applications, transit operations, or other analytical work is desirable.



Training and experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems or combination of work experience and a Master’s degree in Computer Science, or Geography will be considered.

Working Conditions:        

Ability to work within time sensitive project deadlines and a professional office work environment; Excellent communications skills (written and verbal); Strong organization for time and project management requirements; Proficiency using MS Office (e.g., MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, PowerPoint); Effective report writing, grammar, punctuation, proofreading with an attention to detail; Must work well self-monitoring with limited supervision, and as part of a collaborative team; Knowledge of, and experience in, statistical analysis and data management techniques; Travel may be required while working extra hours in order to meet project demands, as necessary;
