Transportation Research Analyst

R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. is one of Canada’s largest independently owned and operated research firms with more than 70 dedicated research professionals and 100 or more part-time data collection staff members, all working to provide quality research across Canada. Malatest offers diverse research project opportunities in a variety of dynamic work environments with five national office locations in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton and Victoria. Currently, we are seeking a Transportation Research Analyst familiar working with large databases. Research projects may include: transportation operations, transportation services, safety programs, vehicle usage, systems analysis, planning, origin and destination studies;

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Project requirements and hours may vary based on project requirements; Adaptability to work other hours and/or overtime, as necessary;

Compensation: Annual salary of $45,000 to $55,000 (based on skills and experience), plus benefits and discretionary performance based bonus opportunities.

Overview: If you are passionate about capturing the meaningful value of travel pattern details to further inform our research, then you will want to join our team. Our Transportation Analyst conducts research, follows and manages data, develops models to analyze information, and prepares reports to ensure that the quality of information gathered, represents and explains the research outcomes that our company provides specifically for our transportation studies. Our Transportation Analyst works collaboratively on a variety of different projects, simultaneously. Proactively our research professionals participate in our ongoing research studies and work well independently to gather, manage, and analyze data in a fast paced, client focused environment. As a Transportation Analyst you would represent the companies legacy with matched values for excellence, professionalism, quality, integrity and efficiency; with an acute detail orientation, methodical data management, numerical abilities and dedicated best practices for the quality transportation research we provide. Can you work with transportation data accurately? Can you identify missing information quickly? Duties will include, but are not limited to: 

Survey design;



Report writing;



Data collection and Data management;



Developing databases;



Trip pattern research methods;



Organizing information and work plans;



Data Analysis and interpreting results;



Other project specific tasks, as required;

Designs and develops data capturing mechanisms and databases; Updates and maintains databases and directories;



Conducts research and develops models to analyze, explain and report behaviour and patterns, and creates methods for data collection and analysis of transportation data;



Sources and collects data from multiple varieties of sources with focused quality assurance, data validations and maintained data integrity;



Performs analysis of gathered data and identifies errors or areas of improvement; Analyzes factors that determine outcomes and reports on those outcomes;



Executes and reviews metrics in order to analyze, report on, and improve inbound information and manage outbound logistics related to ongoing transportation research projects;



Works with fellow analysts to assist in the development and completion of transportation research projects and planning processes to optimize costs, modes, and flow of the workload;



Continues to work for workload and network improvements; documents, and processes;



When applicable, executes mail-outs, printing, shipments and deployment of tools and resources;



Tracks and reports on project related details and applicable research outcomes;



Applies mathematical formulas and statistical techniques and explores theories, solutions and recommendations for identified problems;



Follows data to evaluate the results, and advises on the accuracy of information;



Examines problems related to the research data collection activities and works to resolve;



Monitors research methods, project costs and research techniques to recommend improvements;



Contributes to the timely and cost effective completion of research projects;



Examines and reports statistical data on the variety of transportation research projects completed;



Adhering to Malatest policies, procedures, privacy and confidentiality requirements;

Qualifications: 

Graduate or undergraduate degree in a transportation related field - research, planning, trip and/or service analysis; Geography, Economics, Computer Sciences, or other related discipline; preference in appointment may be given to those with a graduate degree;



2 to 5 years of relevant work experience related to research, data analysis, transportation industry, and geographical information systems;



Strong technical background with data warehousing and data mining, data systems (e.g., SPSS, Wincross, MS Access, MS Excel); SQL (Structured Query Language) database management languages for relational databases and/or programming languages (e.g., Java script, HTML, API);



Strong client focus, excellent verbal & written communications, high level integrity to handle confidential and/or sensitive information accurately and securely;



Proficiency in research methodology and statistical analysis (primarily quantitative) with an understanding of mixed method approaches;

Ability to work within a professional office work environment; Excellent communications skills (written, verbal, in-person, phone, e-mail); Strong time and project management skills; Proficiency in MS Office environment (e.g., MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, PowerPoint); Expertise using ArcGIS and other programs; Effective report writing with an attention to detail; Must self-monitor with limited supervision, and participate as a collaborative research team; Knowledge of, and experience in, statistical analysis and data management techniques; Travel may be required, working extra hours in order to meet project demands, as necessary;
