Utrecht University’s Descartes Centre invites applications for its fellowship program. Fellowships are intended to promote intellectual exchange and collaboration in the domains of the history, the philosophy and the foundation of the sciences and humanities, or any combination thereof. There are two kinds of fellowship available: junior fellowships, which support independent doctoral research and research at Dutch museums and archives – worth €1,500 per month; senior fellowships, which allow senior researchers to contribute to the Descartes Centre by means of public lectures, research seminars and teaching – worth €2,500 per month. Both fellowships are available for up to three months. To be eligible for these fellowships, researchers cannot reside in the Netherlands. The University of Notre Dame’s Medieval Institute invites applications for its Astrik L Gabriel doctoral fellowship in the history of medieval education. This fellowship supports one semester of research on medieval universities and the history of medieval education and projects that make use of the institute’s resources. All doctoral students currently enrolled in a PhD program are eligible to apply. The fellowship carries a stipend of US$10,000.

The University of Notre Dame’s Medieval Institute invites applications for its Astrik L Gabriel postdoctoral fellowship in the history of medieval education. This fellowship supports one semester of research on medieval universities and the history of medieval education and projects that make use of the institute’s resources. The fellowship carries a stipend of US$20,000. All scholars holding a PhD are eligible to apply. The University of Southern California invites nominations for the Tyler prize for environmental achievement. The prize is awarded for environmental science, environmental health and energy conferring great benefit upon mankind. Prizes are awarded for any one of the following: the protection, maintenance, improvement or understanding of an ecological or an environmental condition anywhere in the world; the discovery, further development, improvement, or understanding of known or new sources of energy; medical discoveries or achievements with such worldwide implications that they significantly benefit environmental aspects of human health. Harvard University’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study invites applications for humanities, social sciences and creative arts fellowships. These support scholars, scientists, artists and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishment who wish to pursue work in academic and professional fields in the humanities and social sciences and in the creative arts. The institute sustains a continuing commitment to the study of women, gender, and society, however, applicants’ projects need not focus on gender. There are no citizenship requirements. Former fellows of the Radcliffe Institute are not eligible to apply. Stipends are funded up to US$70,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses. Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University. The University of Leiden invites applications to its Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program: scholarships for law and international relations courses. This supports prospective students who wish to study towards a master’s degree at the university in any of the following: advanced studies in air and space law; advanced studies in European and international business law; advanced studies in international tax law; advanced studies in public international law; international relations and diplomacy. The applicant must have achieved excellent study results relevant to the program. The scholarship will cover a maximum of the full tuition fee minus the home fee, plus €10,000 for living costs. St John’s College at the University of Oxford invites applications for its visiting research center associate scheme. Scholarships are tenable for between three and 12 months and are intended to support academics who wish to spend a period of sabbatical leave in Oxford. Applicants must be academic staff who hold a post in a university other than Oxford. Successful applicants will be eligible for a room or a share of a room in a research center and the same dining rights as other research center associates, but no salary, research allowance or residential accommodation. The Lilly Library of Indiana University invites applications for the Everett Helm visiting fellowships. These enable scholars residing outside the Bloomington area to undertake research projects and to access the collections of the Lilly Library. The library’s holdings support research on: British, French, and American literature and history; the literature of voyages and exploration, specifically the European expansion in the Americas; early printing and the Church;

children’s literature; music; film, radio and television; medicine, science, and architecture; food and drink. An award of US$1,500 is provided in support of travel, living, or research expenses. Awards must be used within one year of the award date and recipients must reside in Bloomington during the period of their awards.

The Lilly Library of Indiana University invites applications for the Mendel fellowships. These support residential research by scholars from around the world in areas of particular interest to the Lilly Library’s Bernando Mendel collections. Areas of interest include: the history of the Spanish colonial empire; Latin American independence movements; European expansion in the Americas; voyages, travels and exploration; geography, navigation and cartography; German literature and history; music, including sheet music. Eligible applicants range from doctoral research students to senior scholars. The fellowships, which are worth up to US$40,000, are intended to cover travel to the library and living expenses while in residence. Fellowships are available from one week to a full academic year. The Lorentz Center, together with the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences, invites nominations for its distinguished Lorentz fellowship. This is awarded to a leading scientist working on cutting-edge research at the interface between the humanities and social sciences and the natural and technological sciences. The fellowship includes: 10 months of on-site study and accommodation at NIAS; replacement funds of up to €5,000 per month for nominees working in the Netherlands; an interdisciplinary NIAS-Lorentz workshop with a total value of €25,000; a personal prize of €10,000. Nominees must be put forward by leading figures from within the Dutch academic community. Harvard University’s Center for Italian Renaissance Studies invites applications for the I Tatti fellowships. These are available for Italian Renaissance scholars working on the architecture, history, literature, material culture, music, philosophy, religion, science or visual arts of Italy from the 13th to the 17th centuries. Scholars can also apply to work on the transmission and circulation of ideas, objects and people during the Renaissance, into and beyond the Italian peninsula, or the historiography of the Italian Renaissance. Applicants must hold a PhD, dottorato di ricerca, or equivalent they received between 2002 and 2011. They must be conversant in either English or Italian and able to understand both languages. Applicants must be able to carry out most of their research in Florence. Preference will be given to scholars embarking on a new project rather than polishing a dissertation.

Fellows are offered a study, use of the Biblioteca Berenson, lunches on weekdays and various other privileges. The maximum stipend is US$50,000, plus a supplement towards relocation expenses. Fellows will be accommodated within the I Tatti Estate or given a housing subsidy. Rice University’s Humanities Research Center invites applications for its external faculty fellowships: the Autrey Visiting Scholar program. Fellowships are awarded to support research projects in the humanities. This includes, but is not limited to: history, philosophy, languages, literature, linguistics, religious studies, art history and the arts. Proposals employing humanistic approaches are welcome from the anthropology and other social sciences, natural sciences, music, architecture, and engineering. The fellows will teach one course affiliated with a humanities department, and will be in residence at the center during their appointments. Both junior and senior scholars with tenure or tenure-track appointments at colleges and universities other than Rice are eligible to apply. They must be at least three years beyond receipt of the PhD at the beginning of the fellowship term. Fellows will receive a stipend of no less than $40,000, depending on rank, for a duration of one semester, as well as an allowance for research and relocation to be used during the appointment period. The call for applications will be posted mid-August and outlines all of the required materials. Imperial College London invites applications for its junior research fellowships. These support early-career postdoctoral researchers of demonstrated ability and high potential in subject areas that have a strong research base within Imperial College’s faculties of engineering, medicine and natural sciences, and the business school. Applicants may be of any nationality but must provide evidence of their eligibility to work in the UK. Applicants must have a first or upper second class honors undergraduate degree or equivalent, together with a PhD and no more than four years’ postdoctoral research experience in an academic environment. Applications must be submitted in English. Fellowships are tenable for three years and provide a salary within the Imperial College academic and research level B pay scales 27 to 34, worth £31,300 to £37,800 per annum in 2011, and an annual contribution towards research and travel costs of up to £10,000. Fellows may spend up to 12 months visiting other research institutions or in industry, with the maximum time spent at any one institution not exceeding six months. The University of East Anglia’s Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas invites applications for its visiting research fellowships. Two fellowships are available to conduct research for publication pertaining to the arts in Africa, Oceania and the Americas. Fellowships have a normal duration of three months. Fellows are expected to give at least two presentations, in the form of lectures or seminars, during the fellowship period. Scholars in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, anthropology, art history, archaeology, history and related disciplines are eligible to apply. Applicants must hold a PhD, though advanced PhD candidates may occasionally be considered. The fellowship stipend is £396 per week for 12 weeks, plus return travel costs up to a maximum of £750. The fellow must reside in Norwich for the duration of the fellowship except for brief research trips. Applications are currently invited for the academic year 2014-2015. The Warburg Institute at the University of London invites applications for its short-term fellowships. Fellowships are tenable for two, three or four months in the academic year 2013-2014, and enable fellows to conduct research into cultural and intellectual history. The following fellowships are available: the Brian Hewson Crawford fellowship: a two-month fellowship for the study of any aspect of the classical tradition, open to European scholars other than of British nationality; the Alan Deyermond Fellowship: a two-month fellowship to undertake research on a project related to Spanish or Portuguese literature, culture or visual arts before 1600 with a preference for the Medieval period; the Henri Frankfort fellowship: a two-month fellowship for the study of the intellectual and cultural history of the ancient Near East; the Albin Salton fellowship: a two-month fellowship for research into the cultural contacts between Europe, the East and the New World in the late medieval, Renaissance and earlymodern periods; the Grete Sondheimer fellowship: a two-month fellowship to be held in any of the areas of interest of the institute; the Frances A Yates fellowships: a number of two-, three- and four-month fellowships for research into any aspect of cultural and intellectual history, with preference given to work on the medieval and Renaissance encyclopedia of knowledge; Brill Fellowships at the Centre for the History of Arabic Studies in Europe: postdoctoral researchers may apply for a two-, three- or four-month fellowship for research projects on any aspect of the relations between Europe and the Arab World from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. All fellowships are generally intended for early-career scholars. Candidates must have completed at least one year’s research on their doctoral dissertation at the time of application or, if postdoctoral, must normally have been awarded their doctorate within the preceding five years. Fellowships are worth £2,500 for two months, £3,600 for three months and £4,800 for four months. McGill University's Burney Centre, in conjunction with the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, invites applications for the McGill-ASECS fellowship. This assists scholars who need to travel to and establish temporary residence in Montreal in order to use the resources of the library. The fellowship is open to scholars interested in any aspect of Frances Burney, the Burney family and their extended circle. The award provides US$3,000 for a one-month stay. The University of Michigan and its Center for Afro-American and African Studies invites applications for the Du Bois/Mandela/Rodney postdoctoral fellowship. Applications are welcome from scholars working on Africa and the African Diaspora. This is a residential fellowship for one academic year. The fellowship package is worth US$45,000 plus health insurance. Consideration will be given to all disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences and professional schools. Verde islands, the Anglophone Caribbean, the Canary Islands and Madagascar and/or other less studied areas are especially encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted from scholars of any nationality who have a PhD in hand and who are no more than five years beyond the completion of their degree. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Beckman Institute invites applications for its fellowships. The program provides an opportunity for young scientists to spend several years doing independent research in the behavioral and biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, and physics before launching formal academic careers. Preference is given to those applicants whose research interests correspond to one or more of the programs in the Beckman Institute. The annual stipend is US$52,000, plus benefits and a research budget. Fellows are selected for terms of up to three years. International applicants are encouraged to apply. The Weizmann Institute of Science invites applications for its visiting professorships. The awards are for outstanding scientists from institutions of higher learning and research institutions in any country. Applicants must have achieved appropriate recognition in their fields of activity and hold the rank of full professor or equivalent. The awards cover periods of two months to one year and may include financial remuneration, round trip airfare and rent free housing. The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, at the Harvard University John F Kennedy School of Government, invites applications for its fellowships in science and international affairs. The center offers both predoctoral and postdoctoral research fellowships for one year, with a possibility for renewal. Applications for research fellowships are welcomed from recent recipients of a PhD or equivalent degree, university faculty members, and employees of government, military, international, humanitarian, and private research institutions who have appropriate professional experience. Political scientists, lawyers, economists, those in the natural sciences, and others of diverse disciplinary backgrounds are eligible to apply. Fellows are expected to complete a book, monograph, or other significant publication during their period in residence. Pre-doctoral research fellows are expected to contribute to the center’s research activities, and work on their doctoral dissertations. The center offers fellowships in areas related to international security and science, technology and public policy. Stipends are worth US$34,000 for postdoctoral research fellows and US$20,000 for predoctoral research fellows over a period of ten months. There are no nationality restrictions. Ludwig-Maximilians University’s Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society invites applications for postdoctoral and senior fellowships. Research projects should pertain to one or more of the following: environmental ethics, politics and movements; ecological imperialism; natural disasters and cultures of risk; environmental knowledge and knowledge societies; transformation of landscapes; resource use and conservation. Scholars from around the world and a variety of disciplines related to environmental humanities can apply. The program is exclusively a writing fellowship. Fellowships will usually be granted for periods of six, nine or 12 months but they can also be granted for three months or be broken up into individual three-month periods. Fellows are expected to be in residence in Munich. The Carson Centre will pay for a replacement of the successful candidate at his or her home institution; alternatively it will pay a fellowship that is commensurate with experience and current employment. Harvard University invites applications for the Charles Bullard fellowships in forest research. This fellowship program supports advanced research and study by individuals who show promise of making an important contribution, either as scholars or administrators, to forestry and forest-related subjects including biology, Earth sciences, economics, politics, administration, philosophy, humanities, the arts or law. The Bullard fellowship is a residential program and fellows are expected to spend a substantial portion of their fellowship based at either Harvard Forest in Petersham, Massachusetts or at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Bullard fellowships are generally awarded to individuals in mid-career who have established themselves in public service, in academia or in the private sector. For those in academic careers preference is ordinarily given to holders of doctoral degrees. Recent PhD graduates are generally not appropriate candidates. The fellowships carry stipends of up to US$40,000, or more if necessary, one return trip between the fellowship site location and the home base, and a US$500 supplies budget. Applications will be accepted beginning September 1, 2013 for Fellowships during 2014-2015. The University of Notre Dame’s Center for Philosophy of Religion invites applications for its fellowships. Four types of fellowships are available: one Alvin Plantinga fellowship, worth US$60,000 and intended to provide time for reflection and writing to those whose work is on the forefront of current research in philosophy of religion and Christian philosophy; one Frederick J Crossen fellowship, worth US$45,000, for scholars who might not qualify for any other center fellowship, for example, foreign scholars or those outside the field of philosophy; up to two research fellowships, worth between US$45,000 and US$50,000, for scholars working in the center’s areas of interest; one visiting graduate fellowship of US$20,000 to a philosophy graduate students from other institutions who are working on dissertations in philosophy of religion or Christian philosophy.

The Plantinga fellow and research fellows may also choose to teach during their fellowship, in which case they will receive an additional US$7,500 annually. All fellows will receive up to US$2,000 reimbursement for moving expenses and up to US$2,000 for research expenses. The Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology invites applications under the Frederick Williamson memorial fund. One-year fellowships and grants will be awarded to finance advanced study or research relating to the peoples of Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim and neighboring Himalayan areas, their society, religion and material culture. Applicants need not be members of the university. The University of Notre Dame’s Medieval Institute invites applications for its short-term postdoctoral research program. Stipends are available for three or four months for postdoctoral scholars who wish to conduct research in the Medieval Institute library. The maximum award is US$1,700 per month. The Clinton Institute for American Studies at University College Dublin invites applications for its visiting fellowships. Fellows may be resident at the institute for any length of time from two weeks to six months, during which period they are expected to make a contribution to the institute’s program of events. Fellows are usually postdoctoral senior researchers, although non-academic researchers in relevant fields may also apply. Doctoral students are ineligible for these fellowships. Fellows will be provided with an office, computer, printing facilities and library access. This position does not normally carry a stipend, although fellows who contribute to the institute’s postgraduate teaching program will receive suitable fees.
