Community Leaders and Volunteers Will Receive 2012 Advocacy, Leadership and Service Awards from Senior Connections RICHMOND, VA September 7, 2012 Senior Connections’ Ninth Annual Empty Plate Luncheon will be held October 10, 2012 at the Science Museum of Virginia. The annual campaign raises funds to meet critical needs of seniors, caregivers and persons with disabilities. For $50.00, the Agency fills “empty plates” with meals, rides, prescription medications, financial help and health care. Sponsors generously support this campaign. This year’s Presenting Sponsors are Dominion Resources, Genworth Financial and M.H. West & Company. Community leaders and volunteers who work on behalf of seniors, caregivers and persons with disabilities will be recognized. Five awards will be presented: 1. Mrs. Gina Simpson and Mr. Tom Silvestri are sharing the 2012 MaryEllen Cox Memorial Award for Advocacy. Mrs. Simpson has been an advocate on senior issues for more than 50 years and has served on numerous Boards, Commissions and Task Forces. She has been a contributor to many organizations, including the Senior Center of Richmond, the Virginia Coalition on Aging and the Junior League of Richmond. Mr. Silvestri, a tireless advocate, is Publisher of the Richmond Times Dispatch. He is a member and past Chair of the Board for the Older Dominion Partnership, a statewide group that helps communities plan for the needs of their aging populations. Mr. Silvestri is a member of Leadership Metro Richmond and the Greater Richmond Chamber. He champions discussions of senior issues as part of the Richmond Times Dispatch Public Square Forums. 2. Mr. Peter Perkins, a long time volunteer with the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg and a retiree of Anthem, will receive the E. Harris Spindle Award for Service to Seniors. Mr. Perkins is the Chair of the United Way’s Older Adults Action Council that awards funds to organizations that serve seniors and caregivers in the Richmond Metropolitan Region. Additionally, Mr. Perkins Co-chairs the Richmond Region’s No Wrong Door Service Coordination Advisory Council. The Action Council promotes collaboration among service providers and promotes quality services. 3. This year’s Richard Hogan Memorial Award for Volunteer Service has been given to Mr. David Blanset. Mr. Blanset has volunteered since 2003 with Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP). He also spends numerous hours volunteering with SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together). He is concerned about the community and especially, the wellbeing of seniors and caregivers. 4. This year’s Eva Teig Hardy Award for Corporate Service is being shared by Mrs. Rita Randolph of Dominion and Ms. Beth Ludden of Genworth Financial. Both of these corporate leaders have supported important initiatives that enhance the quality of life for older adults and persons with disabilities. Mrs. Randolph has more than 30 years of experience with Dominion. She currently serves as Senior Community Affairs Representative for Energy Assistance Programs such as Fan Care and EnergyShare. Ms. Ludden has represented the business community in the Region’s Age Wave Leadership Group. She has insured that senior issues are promoted and supported throughout Genworth. 5. The Mary C. Payne Leadership Award will be presented to Dr. E. Ayn Welleford, Professor and Chair of the Gerontology Department at VCU and Dr. Peter Boling, Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at VCU. Dr. Welleford and Dr. Boling are visionary trailblazers, innovative leaders/educators and outstanding contributors to the field of aging. ### Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization governed by a Board of Directors. The Agency, established in 1973 as part of a nationwide network of Area Agencies on Aging, provides direct services, information and referral, education and advocacy for seniors and caregivers residing in the City of Richmond and the Counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Powhatan.
