More Revere walks [approximate walk times] 2 Point of Pines / 10 minutes On this peninsula, summer homes, now year-round, face the Art Deco Route 1A drawbridge over Pines River. Gibson Park on the riverside is a great place for relaxing or bird watching.
3 Beachmont Urban Trail / 25 minutes The city’s first resort neighborhood, Beachmont has hills, picturesque rooflines and public stairways set in between the hills to make the climb easier. Look for Kimmerle, Cummings and Louis Pasteur parks and ocean and marsh views from Crescent and Summer Street.
4 Shirley Avenue / 10 minutes A diverse neighborhood ripe with history and Urban Renewal. The walking loop takes you to the Wall Mural, the 100-year-old Jewish temple and fire house, multicultural groceries, restaurants, bakeries and Costa Park.
5 Broadway & City Hall / 30 minutes Walk along Broadway, starting at the 1897 Revere City Hall. Follow Pleasant Street one block, to the Museum of the Revere Society for Cultural and Historic Preservation in the former rectory of the 1901 Immaculate Conception Church next to Sonny Myers Park. On nearby Beach Street is the 1903 Revere Public Library, constructed after a campaign by the Revere Women’s Club and the Revere Journal, with funding by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The picturesque Rumney Marsh Burying Ground on Butler Street was used between 1693 and 1929 to bury slaves, colonial residents and veterans of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Walk back to Broadway, turn left and walk down to Chelsea Creek at Revere Beach Parkway. The Battle of Chelsea Creek – In 1775, when the British ship Diana used the creek to seize food and provisions from local towns, New England minutemen attacked the ship immobilized by the tide, in the first naval battle of the American Revolution, memorialized by a plaque. Further down Chelsea Creek, the 1734 Slade’s Mill used tidal power to grind flour, snuff and spices for domestic use and for export. For tour info: 781.631.3945
6 Hills and ABC Streets /30 minutes Mountain Avenue, where the hilly cross streets are alphabetized, sits atop a drumlin formed by a glacier. The top of Kilburn, Lambert, Madison, Newbury and Oxford Streets provide spectacular views of the Boston skyline.
7 West Revere Urban Trail /35 minutes Once home to farms, this area offers suburban comforts, a marked walking trail, and a new playground at DiSalvo Park.
8 North Revere /20 minutes to 4 hours The Northern Strand Community Path is built on an abandoned rail line overlooking Rumney Marsh between Malden and Saugus. Access is at Salem St., Blodgett St. and Spring St. in Revere, and at Lynn St. in Malden.
About our work in Revere In 2012, the City of Revere, RevereCares and Partners Health Care developed a partnership with WalkBoston to work on walking to school and getting residents to walk more. As a result, all of the elementary schools have active Walk to School programs that are fully supported by the Mayor, Revere Public Schools and the School Committee. WalkBoston has also been active in advocating for improved pedestrian access across Bell Circle and within the Shirley Avenue neighborhood. Joint work between the City and WalkBoston also resulted in this map which is an aid to walking throughout the City.
Support for this map Kickstarter contributions from over 60 individuals and organizations successfully met a challenge grant from the John H. and H. Naomi Tomfohrde Foundation.
