Dublin Remembers

10

Step into history this Easter Monday and experience the sights and sounds of the capital in 1915. O’Connell Street will come alive with street theatre, music and vintage attractions as RTÉ recreates the atmosphere of Ireland before the Easter Rising. The street will be devoted to pedestrians for the day. So, jump on a vintage carousel, hop on board a steam train and feast your eyes on some of the finest motor cars from that time and lots more besides. Of course, Dublin a century ago was not all frivolity. Near O’Connell Street lay one of the largest slums in Europe, where people lived in unimaginable poverty.

RTÉ Road to the Rising will reflect the lives of all Dubliners – rich and poor and that small, determined group that was plotting rebellion.

RTÉ Road to the Rising has been created in partnership with An Post, Dublin City Council and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht with collaboration and support from the National Library of Ireland, Transport for Ireland and the local business sector.

RTÉ is proud to play a role in bearing witness to Ireland’s most memorable and historic moments. We are delighted to partner with An Post, Dublin City Council and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to deliver this exciting programme of events for Easter Monday. RTÉ will continue to play a significant role in helping the nation mark the Decade of Commemorations. RTÉ Road to the Rising will be a highly creative and impactful re-imagining of this period in history and will help set the stage and provoke the national conversation about our identity and cultural roots. Whether you are on the street on the day, or with us as audience, RTÉ will continue to play a unique role in helping to draw the nation together, to celebrate and mark what is important and what defines us. Is léiriú é RTÉ Road to the Rising ar thiomantas RTÉ comóradh agus ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar phríomhimeachtaí Dheich mBliana na gCuimhneachán agus ar an tuiscint atá againn ar ár ról féin mar eagraíocht meán cumarsáide seirbhíse poiblí na hÉireann ina leith. Welcome An Post is pleased to support this wonderful programme of events, with so much to inform and entertain people of all ages and interests. The tall crane moving steadily above the GPO is testament to the construction work currently underway on GPO Witness History, our new interpretive exhibition centre which will open at Easter 2016. We hope that anyone who has a family story to tell about the Easter Rising, or artefacts relating to the events of Easter week – or to those who were involved or impacted, adults and children alike - will take the opportunity to visit the GPO this Easter Monday, 2015. In conjunction with RTÉ and the National Library, we look forward to meeting them and to hearing their stories and to providing official registration facilities for precious artefacts. We invite our customers all over Ireland to come and walk with us on this RTÉ Road to the Rising – do bring your family and friends! Donal Connell An Post

RTÉ Road to the Rising is a very exciting project that will initiate the countdown to the Centenary of the 1916 Rising. Dublin City Council is proud to work in partnership with RTÉ, An Post and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to deliver this one off event in the historic setting of O’Connell Street. I acknowledge the input of the business sector and other statutory partners who have worked together to create a wonderful programme for the day. The variety of content is both educational and entertaining and offers a unique opportunity for all to experience elements of early 20th Century Dublin. I invite and encourage everybody who has an interest in this period of our history to join us on O’Connell Street on Easter Monday for what promises to be an enjoyable and memorable family day out, as we look ahead to the Centenary just one year from now. Lord Mayor of Dublin, Christy Burke

one & ALL

I am delighted to support RTÉ Road to the Rising, a wonderful event which transports us back to the Dublin of 1915 with an array of live performances, street theatre and even a vintage carousel and steam engine! This project is a pioneering partnership between RTÉ, An Post, Dublin City Council and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, working closely with some of our National Cultural Institutions. The family-friendly events, talks and performances are an invitation to explore, imagine and reflect upon this important period in our history. It is a fantastic platform through which Irish people can approach the events of 1916 in a way that is interesting and engaging for all ages. It is also an excellent launch pad for Ireland 2016, the national initiative to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising. Tá súil agam go mbainfidh sibh taitneamh as an lá. Among these was ‘Insurrection’, an ambitious and groundbreaking television drama that has been stored in the RTÉ Archives for the past 50 years. This eight-part series, broadcast nightly in 1966, told the story of the Rising as it might have unfolded had television existed in 1916. As part of RTÉ Road to the Rising, a charity screening of the restored series of ‘Insurrection’ will be shown at Liberty Hall Theatre over a single day.

RTÉ would like to gratefully acknowledge the support and participation of the individual speakers who were kind enough to share their research and private collections with the public as part of the RTÉ Road to the Rising project. A big thanks also to all of the many volunteers and actors who gave their time so generously to help make RTÉ Road to the Rising a memorable and successful day.
