“If today’s church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century. Every day I meet young people whose disappointment with the church has turned into outright disgust.” The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Road Trip: Atlanta 2019 As our congregations engage more and more in difficult and necessary conversations about race, privilege, and justice, the Saint Paul Area Synod’s Young Adult Initiative is inviting a cohort of young adults into deep learning together around these critical topics. We will immerse ourselves in media about racial justice and privilege in America, including foundational writings of black theology, contemporary films, and essays from a variety of perspectives. The cohort culminates in a trip to Atlanta where we will meet with local faith and nonprofit leaders, visit landmarks of the civil rights movement, share communal meals, wrestle with what it means to live in America in this time, and reflect on how God is calling us to work for racial justice. The cohort is facilitated by the Rev. Justin Grimm and Anna Marsh, Saint Paul Area Synod staff.
