28th Anniversary Rally 31 March - 6 April, 2014

Official Rally Programme

W here you’l l l ove relaxing by t he M ur ray

Mayor’s Welcome Welcome to our CMCA friends On behalf of Swan Hill Rural City Council, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you, the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia members, to Robinvale for the 28th Anniversary Rally. While in Robinvale, take the opportunity to wander around town or take a walk along the banks of the Murray and visit the historic Robinswood Homestead and learn about Robinvale’s connection with its sister city Villers-Bretonneux in France. Don’t miss the chance to visit Swan Hill’s Pioneer Settlement, which will be celebrating its 50th birthday next year. Take a cruise along the river on the paddle steamer Pyap, catch the evening Sound and Light Show and view the historic buildings (including the PS Gem), and huge collections of equipment, machinery and more. You can also take a walk along the riverfront, or enjoy the shopping, restaurants and cafes within the city. South of Swan Hill is Lake Boga with its recently redeveloped foreshore and the historic Catalina Flying Boat Museum, a must visit attraction. This is just a glimpse of what our municipality has to offer and we look forward to further showcasing this fantastic destination and lifestyle to our CMCA visitors. Our region has plenty to offer, including its terrific weather, native wildlife, local produce, food, wine and scenic destinations. The Murray is the third longest navigable river in the world, after the Amazon and Nile. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to visit our neighbouring municipalities along the length of the river to get a true appreciation of the significance of the Murray. Relax in Paradise

Rally Manager Welcome Welcome to your 28th Anniversary Rally in my hometown of Robinvale/Euston, right here on the banks of our most amazing river, the mighty Murray. Please settle in and enjoy your experience. 50 nationalities make up our community and we welcome you to share what we call home. This has been a very steep learning experience for me and I am amazed at the level of support from within our motorhome club and our community. At this point I won't thank individuals in the interest of maybe missing someone, although I will take this opportunity to thank all who have worked so hard to bring you this event. Mim & I were First Timers not that long ago, and we wanted to expand on our experience and invite the First Timers onto the site two days early to share some of our volunteer's experiences before it gets very busy. At Happy Hour, don’t miss the opportunity to meet some old friends or new acquaintances at one of our two Happy Hour locations, with entertainment most days in both the Football Club (bar opens 3.30pm) and the Riverside Hub (BYO). Most of you have travelled a long way, so please settle in and enjoy the moment, and the good times we will all share through this week and beyond.

Fully Aboriginal-owned and world renowned Aboriginal guided tours to World Heritage Listed Mungo National Park will be operating during the rally on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only. Feel the presence of the past while walking with one of our local Paakantyi tour guides and hear them explain all the significant sites and the culture of their people from one of the oldest human occupation in this ancient land dating back to Aboriginal life over 50,000 years ago to the present day. Nearby Balranald Shire is home to some of the best fishing in NSW, is gateway to the “must see” Mungo National Park and has some great little townships just waiting to welcome rally participants. Balranald, is one of those towns we have all heard of - the one where you plan on staying a night and end up staying a week. This great little township, nestled on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River is one of the best kept secrets in NSW. Friendly, interesting and with great facilities for motorhomers, Balranald is one of those towns that will stay with you long after you have left. Settled in 1851, Balranald is the main township of the Balranald Shire which covers an area half the size of the Netherlands. Nestled on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, Balranald is

renowned for its National Parks, fishing and frogs but it offers so much more for visitors. A stop at the Visitor Information Centre will set you up with all the information you need to explore the town and surrounds. Take time to browse through the shopping precinct, relax at the hotels and registered clubs or tantilise your taste at the restaurants, cafes and bakery where warm hearted country hospitality prevails. If you have not had a chance to explore Mungo and Yanga National Parks during the rally then don’t miss the opportunity while staying in Balranald. Mungo National Park is a real “bucket list” item. When you immerse yourself in the natural landscapes and indigenous history of the area, you will understand why it is a World Heritage listed site.

BALRANALD CARAVAN PARK

On the banks of the Murrumbidgee Situated just a short stroll from Balranald’s retail precinct, the park offers: • Cabin accommodation from deluxe to budget • Grassy drive-thru sites with “big rig” access • Modern clean amenities • Accessible bathroom • Shady trees • Shaded swimming pool • Camp kitchen • Kiosk • Boat ramp • Pet friendly Your hosts: Matt and Dee Jess 60 Court St Balranald NSW 2715 Telephone: 03 5020 1321 Email: [email protected] Web: www.balranaldcaravanpark.com.au

Explore, experience, enjoy!

Yanga National Park, just 10km out of Balranald, offers an insight into the pastoral heritage of the region with self- guided tours of the historic drop log house and woolshed. Of course the natural fauna and flora are also a big attraction, and Balranald has a wealth of bird watching opportunities and some great nature walks, including the Bidgee Nature Walk over the swing bridge right in the heart of town. Art lovers are not forgotten with one of the best little art galleries outside of the cities. Local artist Jan Lawler and a committed group of volunteers have turned the old Masonic Lodge into a haven for art lovers and artists alike. Many of you will connect Balranald with the Southern Bell Frog – a rare frog that calls the area home. In a quirky nod to their importance, 16 frog sculptures have been installed throughout

the town at various points of interest which makes for an interesting “frog hunt”. For the fishing enthusiast a visit to the village of Kyalite is a must. Just 38km from Balranald you will find the centre for fishing in the region with a one stop pub that can furnish you with everything you need to catch that famous Murray Cod. And for those looking for a camp site on their way across to Balranald, Lake Benanee offers great camping beside white sandy beaches – great for a picnic or an overnight stay. We look forward to see you…. For more tourism information please contact the Balranald Visitor Information Centre.

The most common comment we have when playing is ‘we knew every song you guys played’.

Wayne is an accomplished artist not only as a vocalist, but as a lead guitarist and songwriter. His repertoire being a wide choice of country, country rock, old time rock ‘n’ roll, popular covers, plus guitar instrumentals. His love for country music moved him to Tamworth in the 90’s and he was a finalist in the top five instrumental section ‘Tiara Awards Tamworth’ in 2000. This is just one of his many achievements. He has toured extensively with showcases and bands, and has sung in various country and country rock bands in Newcastle and Sydney, but now tours Australia working as a solo artist.

Ron Herberte Ron has been in various bands for nearly 40 years as a lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist and has a great range of over 150 songs including country, old time and rock ‘n’ roll. He is currently involved with two bands one of which is The Poachers. Other band members include:

• Brad Hunter, bass guitar and vocals. Brad and Ron have played in various bands

Dave Prior Dave Prior is a seasoned comedy entertainer and is what the industry calls ‘a great all-rounder’. He has performed in France, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu as well as major festivals and clubs throughout Australia. He’s not only a funny guy, but a very good singer, who loves his country music but is just as comfortable singing an good old standard, jazz tune or recent top 40 song. Originally from the bush, west of Alice Springs, Dave’s show includes a healthy dose of hilarious Australiana and political and social observations. He has also been a regular support act for Adam Harvey.

together for over 30 years.

• Noel Skinner, drums. Noel has been playing drums from an early age and has also been involved in some of Ron’s other bands.

James Herberte James had no choice but to be musical being surrounded by a family of renowned musicians in the Sunraysia area. He is carving out his own style as a solo singer guitarist playing gigs in northern Victoria, Riverland SA and Southern NSW. A resident act at the Sandbar Sunday Session in Mildura, James also played support at the Red Hot Summer Tour 2014 featuring Suzi Quatro along with Shannon Noll, Russel Morris, The Angels and The Black Sorrows. James has a style of his own playing hits from the 70’s to now. He is sure to get you tapping your feet or singing along.

Twilight Zone The Twilight Zone features two members from two of the biggest Australian bands of the late sixties era. A three piece band with Peter Tilbrook from The Masters Apprentices on lead vocals and lead guitar, John Bywaters from The Twilights on bass and back-up vocals and Billy Clarke from the popular Jim Hermel Band on drums. The Twilights were the No 1. Band in Australia in the mid to late 60’s and The Masters Apprentices were No 2. The Twilights won the Australian Hoadley’s Battle of the Sounds in 1966 and as part of their prize they got a trip to go to England. The Masters Apprentices came 2nd in the same competition In 1968, but the result was so incredibly close [less than one point] the judges gave the Masters Apprentices the same 1st prize as the winners and so the band also got the trip to England and the opportunity to record at the famous Abbey Road studios where the Beatles did all of their recording.

Highway Men – A Tribute

Greg Hayes accompanying David Prior

Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson, four towering giants in the music industry.

A very polished corporate Master of Ceremonies and comedian, Greg Hayes originally hails from Perth, where his uncanny impressions of sporting personalities and politicians led to regular guest appearances on radio and television.

Collectively, as The Highwaymen, the quartet had a unique connection to Australia that has only strengthened over the last two decades. The Highwaymen toured Australia in 1991 and 1995, playing Newcastle, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, attracting hundreds of thousands to their concerts and appearances and generating an excitement rivalled only by that of The Beatles.

After moving to Sydney in 1979 he was soon busy performing at clubs, theatre restaurants, corporate events and on cruise ships etc. His impressions range from Hollywood favourites to a host of Australian politicians and media people. A celebrated interview with Alan Jones on 2UE Sydney in 1993 was a classic, with Greg impersonating then Prime Minister Paul Keating, thus creating quite a stir with the listening audience for a long time after.

Now, Canadian-born international performer and producer Dail Platz, along with award-winning Australian songwriter and entertainer Brent Lillie has re-created the magic that is The Highwaymen.

Indeed since then, Greg has gone on to perfect the Alan Jones style and voice, and very successfully incorporates 'Alan' into every show he now does. Greg spent nearly 15 years touring with the late great Slim Dusty and consequently developed a fondness for Slim’s music. You will too when you hear his terrific Slim Dusty songs.

All The Highwaymen’s great songs are included: Desperadoes Waiting for a Train, Live Forever, Highwayman and many more, along with individual classics like Luckenbach Texas, On the Road Again, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire and Help me Make it Through the Night – 40 classic songs in all. Imagine The Highwaymen, plus the best of the best from four legendary artists – that’s like five shows rolled into one!

TV credits include A Country Practice, Young Doctors and a number of appearances on the Midday Show. Greg has extensive voice-over experience and was often heard on 2UE on the late Stan Zemanek's night time radio show. Greg toured regularly with the Slim Dusty Show where, as an adjunct to his stand up comedy, he brought to life country greats Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson. He has also starred in his own package show Cold Hard Cash in which he pays tribute to the legend Johnny Cash and also features The Men in Black Band plus a special female guest artist.

Paul Costa

Andrew Wishart

Paul has had an amazing response since the release of his 4th album Wheels & Steel opening at #2 on the ARIA charts and scoring #1 radio hits with the first two singles Tractors & Bikes and Big End of Town.

Andrew Wishart is determined to make the most of his opportunities after he became a household name in the Australian television series X-Factor.

He's been in the business full time for 12 years and performed all over Australia at major events such as the Gympie Muster, the iconic Birdsville Races, Tamworth CM Festival, the Deni Ute Muster and more! His career has also taken him internationally to Japan, New Zealand and through Europe. Another memorable highlight was touring East Timor entertaining the Australian and NZ troops in 2008.

The down-to-earth family man was a crowd and judge favourite for his nonpretentious style, and willingness to take on a variety of musical styles without the usual histrionics associated with reality television shows. And while that uniqueness may have enhanced his beginnings in the show his amazing musical ability, honed over 20 years as performer on the pub circuit, entrenched him as a real musical talent who still has plenty to offer.

Being nominated for three Golden Guitars at the 38th CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia, including Male Artist alongside Keith Urban, Troy Cassar-Daley, Adam Brand and James Blundell was another career highlight. In 2011 Paul was asked to be an ambassador for Mission Australia and continues performing at events and working on fundraising and awareness projects for their community service programs.

“I don't think you ever give up on your dreams. Every performance is a blessing now,” Andrew said from Melbourne as he prepares to perform at one of his numerous gigs. “I've had gigs in South Australia, Jupiter’s Casino, Maroochydore, Hayman Island, Cairns, Tasmania... all over the place, it's been a hectic Christmas". “I haven't gone back to my job, I'm putting everything into this. I don't want to be a rock star, but I have to create a niche.” His performance philosophy is simple – make the audience happy. “I want them to feel like they are relaxing in their own backyard listening to a jukebox,” Andrew said. The jukebox of course has a wide selection of tunes and Andrew's goal is to cover as many different styles and genres as he can, but always with his own interpretation. “The show will definitely have some of the songs representative of my time on X-Factor, Adele of course, Steve Earle, U2 plus a few surprises. I've surrounded myself with fantastic musicians and we all enjoy what we are doing.”

This presentation will outline existing rights, limitations, effect on the sustainability of the resource and highlight opportunities based on international and Australian examples of enhanced angler access using the Murray Darling as the key focus area. The presentation will also outline the responsible use of fishing areas and show where irresponsible use has led to a limitation of access and an ongoing social bias towards anglers as a group. The presentation will highlight how the enhancements of access and awareness of rights for both anglers and land managers could enhance social and economic development for local and broader communities. A key focus of the presentation will be to draw attention to access locations and existing limitations. The presentation will highlight the need for a 'whole of recreational user' approach at a state and national level to address access limitations for all users including recreational anglers. A key in the delivery of any approach to is to work in a unified manner while promoting sustainable and responsible use of the resource.

Geoff will demonstrate a series of Apps (little computer programs), which might benefit the RV traveller. Please bring a pad and pen to take notes.

Invitation to Port Stephens

Invitation to Port Stephens

Rally Manager’s Message

Welcome to the CMCA 29th Anniversary Rally

It will be a great pleasure for Laurel and I to personally welcome you to our hometown of Nelson Bay, Port Stephens for the 29th CMCA National Rally. Prior to my retirement it was my privilege to market the Port Stephens’ region to the world. As a premier tourist destination in NSW there are a multitude of activities and attractions to explore. We are extremely fortunate to have the absolute support of Port Stephens Council, The Port Stephens’ Sports Council and the professional staff of the Port Stephens Visitors Centre (VIC).

On Behalf of Port Stephens Council, it gives me great pleasure to welcome members of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia to beautiful Nelson Bay for the 29th Anniversary Rally.

Whist Port Stephens has a diverse economy; tourism is the major focus on the Tomaree Peninsula with Mother Nature providing the ideal environment for many soft adventure activities. The pristine waterways and the unique coastal dunes of the Worimi Conservation area will be a topic of conversation for many happy hours during your travels after the Rally has concluded. Port Stephens has a vast selection of holiday accommodation which provides the opportunity for friends and family to meet with you on your travels. We are putting together a program which will give all members the opportunity to attend seminars that are timely and relevant to us all. In conjunction with the VIC we are putting together a tour program to complement your Rally experience and ensure you have many highlights to celebrate. While there will be a great variety of tours, no visit to our area is complete without a cruise on our pristine waterways or sandboard down one of the giant dunes. The VIC will have a tour desk open each morning of the Rally with the promise no one will miss out on a Port Stephens local tour. The Port Stephens stand will be open every day to accept volunteer forms and provide general advice on the area. Till we meet again, stay healthy and safe travels,

Your home for the Rally, the Tomaree Sports Complex, is perfectly situated to give you access to the very best Port Stephens has to offer. You are just minutes from the centre of Nelson Bay, with its restaurants, attractions and shopping, which means you will not want for anything during your time with us. If getting off the beaten track is more your style, why not experience the largest mobile sand dune system in Australia by taking a visit to the Worimi Conservation Lands and the Stockton Sand Dunes, best accessed via the township of Anna Bay, or take a short hike up to the pinnacle of the Tomaree Headland, which affords sweeping views of the Port and the Pacific Ocean beyond. You can take a dip at Fingal Beach, spot whales and dolphins from a cruise on one of our renowned operators based out of D'Albora Marina, take in some fishing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding, or take a day trip to the west of the area where the historic locales of Seaham, Hinton and Duns Creek offer a glimpse of the rural and riverside lifestyle Port Stephens is known for. I encourage you to make the Port Stephens Tourist Information Centre, which is centrally located on Victoria Parade Nelson Bay (behind D'Albora Marina), your first port of call for all things Port Stephens. Our friendly team of staff and volunteers will be only too happy to help you with a booking for one of the many attractions our area has to offer, or just a nugget of local knowledge you can only get from someone who lives and loves our great corner of Australia. Port Stephens is proud to be your home for the duration of your stay and we look forward to seeing you all around the area during the Rally. We hope you have an enjoyable time and that this experience will lead to a lasting relationship with you all. Yours sincerely, Bruce MacKenzie MAYOR OF PORT STEPHENS
