Overall positioning in the Division 2 competition was seventh (7th) place out of twelve (12).

The competition was a fun filled experience for all the boys and it was great to see them come together as a team and enjoy the spirit of hockey.

Redlands also sent an Umpire – Nick Thomas, Nick was very diligent in his umpiring duties and received some encouraging feedback to assist him in his development as an Umpire. The association would also like to acknowledge Kim Curnow (Coach), Terry Middleton (Ass. Coach and Bus Driver) and David Cullen (Manager) for taking care of the kids and volunteering their time to the team and the association. A special mention to Stacey Cabot for helping cook some meals for everyone and being a major source of information and expertise on State Championships.

Representative Hockey - U13 Girls

The U13 girls state championships was at Maryborough this year and we had a fabulous time, from the bus trip up with our flam ingo and parrot mascots Pete, Phil, Philipa and Philipina (the girls named them, not me!) to the bus trip home with an education into the wonders of 80’s music! Our first game was against Warwick which we won 2-0, our second game against Ipswich 2 was also a 2-0 win. The girls were pumped up after their first day success and went back into Day 2 against Gold Coast 2 with another 2-0 win! Game 4 was a tough match against Sunshine Coast 2 but with some strong defence we held them off to a 0-0 draw. Day 3 was a day on the turf and the girls played exceptionally well with a 0-0 draw against Cairns 3 and then another 2-0 win against Fraser Coast 2. We then went for a drive to Hervey Bay and a lovely walk out on the jetty while the sun was going down. The girls enjoyed the shark show – some boys hooked a 2m tiger shark that they had to drag in along the jetty to the beach to unhook – and then we had our team dinner with some of our parent supporters at a lovely pizza restaurant. Our last game was against Tweed Border 2 and we had to win this game to take out the division. Both our attack and defence were on fire and the girls gave it their everything but unfortunately although we kept their attack out of our goal box, we couldn’t get points on the board either , resulting in a 0-0 draw and Tweed winning the division by two points. We also had success with our umpire Brooke Addison being chosen to umpire the Division One final – we are so proud of you Brooke. Your umpiring skills were several steps above anyone else at the championships and you were an absolute credit to RHA. Thanks also to Portia who came along last minute to help as a Tech Official, they were lucky to have you and so were we – you were such a great help. I hope the girls are proud of their amazing efforts over the tournament – we didn’t have a single loss and we had no goals scored against us which is a fabulous result. Thank you to Petra as Coach and Jade as Assistant Coach – you did a wonderful job and your support of the team was amazing. The girls were so lucky to have you and they all grew in their confidence and their hockey playing because of your advice and assistance. Thank you also to the parents who came up to support the team, you were very positive and encouraging, and to the parents who couldn’t come up but sent messages of support every day. I hope you are as proud of your young ladies as I am – it was a pleasure to be their manager this tournament. Anne Swann

Representative Hockey - U18 Women

The Redlands u18 girls team had a fantastic tournament away at the State Championships held at Tweed on the first weekend of the school holidays. The team consisted of the following girls: Emma Systa, Melita Zambelli, Jade Davey, Zali Carter, Charlotte Healy and Portia Anger from RHA. With the welcome addition of Laura Nicholson, Makenzie Weale, Jamie Shannon, Ashleigh Neil, Chloe Scaysbrook and Jordan Dickson from BWHA. As well as Hannah Callum-Sanders from Maryborough and Elisha McMahon from Townsville. We would like to thank the board and RHA RDO for their efforts in getting players and sending this team. The girls had a great time and played some great hockey. On day 1 of the carnival the girls had two games. The first game was against Townsville which they lost 5-1. However we scored the first goal and went to half-time 1 up but Townsville came out firing and just dug extra deep. Next up was Toowoomba which we also lost 3-0. Despite the score lines the games were well fought with Redlands having some great attacking opportunities. Day 2 of the carnival saw Redlands play against Warwick on the grass and resulted in a win 5-0. The second game of the day was against Gladstone and was a tight game with some great hockey from all the players but was a loss 2-0. On the final day of the tournament the team was in the div 3 grand final. Again it was a really great game of hockey and a real nail biter . Gladstone won 3-2 resulting in a second place in Div 3 for the girls.

The captain for the tournament was Jade Davey and the vice captain was Emma Systa. These girls did an amazing job on and off the field to lead the girls. Even awarding the players some awards during the tournament. Congratulations to Hannah who got player of Div 3 and to Elisha who was selected for the Qld team.

Of course it was not all about the hockey and we managed to spend some time at the beach; swimming, playing beach volleyball and soccer. Although the mention of beach sprints as a pre game warm up did not go down well!! A big thank you to Tammy Drews for coaching the team so well – we all learnt so much on the tour including not to touch the shoes! Hayley Manager

RHA continued to move from strength to strength becoming known as one of the most welcoming, family friendly, forward thinking and professional regional sporting organisations within the region. Our greatest achievement for 2013 was the appointment of a part time regional development Officer (RDO) Rob Gilmour, he was brought in to build the capacity and standard of our coaches and players at team and rep level across all junior age groups. For our first year we had 16 coaches accredited with their level 1 and 9 coaches their community coach qualifications. We continued the principle partnership with Palacio Property Group and secured a 5 year sponsorship agreement with Improve Group Learning Solutions for goalkeeping development. With this sponsorship we were able to run a specialist goalkeeping clinic with Hockeyroo’s Goalkeeper, Toni Cronk. 2013 saw a total of 339 members making up 28 teams and the age groups were U7s, U9s, U12s, U14s, U18s, Senor Men and Senior Womens (5 teams each) with the expansion to 6 teams in the U12s we introduced 2 new colours green and maroon. We also trialled development teams in both the men’s and women’s comp, the purpose of this was to allow for expansion of the senior comp, to improve retention of the U18 players and improved development. It proved to be successful in enhancing the preparation and performance at the U18 State Championships and both U18s teams were more competitive at their respective State Champs. The quality of our umpire development continued, and we were rewarded with one of our umpires, Jackson Freeman umpiring the Div 2 Final at the U13 Boys State Championships plus the Boys finals at the Primary School State Championships. Peta Dunnett also qualified as our first Technical Official and received the Hockey Ed Jnr Technical award at the Women’s Masters Tournament. Turf time was increasing as we again had a number of players playing at GCHA for the Coomera Hockey Club (now Roosters) each Friday night. We also entered an U7 and 2 x U9 teams in a Friday night junior competition played at East’s Tiger Turf and we established a team in the Monday Masters BWHA competition.
