St. Anne

6 August 2017

What is this new heaven? you may ask. It is the firmament of our faith in Christ. What is this new earth? A good heart, a heart like the earth, which drinks up the rain that falls on it and yields a rich harvest. St. Gregory of Nyssa

hen you become a part of a place like a parish, a community or an organization, you come with your expectations: there you can get this, that and the other thing. At St. Anne’s, for example, you know that Mass and the other sacraments will take place at the assigned times, your children will get their religious education and your teens will be well prepared for the Sacrament of Confirmation. But sooner or later, even if we are not paying attention, demands are being made of us too. The place wants to be a better place and calls out to us to do better ourselves, to be worthy of the place that we are now a part of. Parents long to be worthy of the children they have been given. A pastor wants to get to know his parishioners so he can serve them better. The chairman of a committee will try to pass proposals that will really make a difference. A farmer cares for his fields so they can sustain his community for generations. A place is a gift and a responsibility.

vocation was to become a saint, regardless of where I ended up in life. The idea attracted me: like the athletes on my baseball cards, I could image myself suitably enshrined on a holy card. I also thought it would be cool to walk around with the glow of a halo surrounding me. “That? What’s that? you ask. It’s a halo. What? You don’t have one?” Over the years I have met some women and men whom I recognized as holy. There have also been plenty more who wanted to be considered holy but didn’t, like myself, have the courage to completely open themselves to God and his will. Holiness is not like becoming an Eagle Scout, gathering up all the right virtues, like so many merit badges, and then God owes you holiness. Holiness flows like a mysterious inner stream of love for and from God and our neighbor. It is what God does within us. The saints I have met still have their hang-ups and eccentricities and blind spots; they are not infallible but there is so much life in them. You meet them and you become more alive.

This is up against a trend in modern society that urges that everything should be calm and comfortable. You go to church so you can feel better about yourself and your life. You go to a store and you, the customer, are always right, or so you are told. Surely, life has many blessings, graces and happy surprises, especially in our local community. But, if you are at all paying attention to the scripture readings, you will hear there are commandments to heed, the poor to care for, the naked to cover and our own crosses to carry. It is not all easy.

Too much of our spiritual lives are spent looking back, back with regret at our sins, mistakes of the past and missed opportunities, and wishing we were all the way back to the days when Jesus walked the earth so we could ask him our questions and know for sure what kind of a person he was. We forget that, after Jesus, the Holy Spirit came down upon the believers and inspired them to go to the ends of the earth. Only the Holy Spirit knows what that future could be and we shall have to wait with anxiety and suspense for it to be revealed. But first of all, we should be looking ahead, not back.

I was told by the sisters in grammar school that my
