IMAGES The Book of Exodus tells us that, while Moses conversed with God on Mount Sinai, the waiting Hebrew people grew restless. To give the people something to worship, Aaron created a golden calf. Moses, coming down from Sinai and seeing what had happened in his absence, became infuriated. “You shall not make to you any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.” God is not a thing among other things, a being among other beings. God is other. As the Psalmist described it later: They made an image of a calf at Horeb, and worshiped a metal idol. They traded their majestic God for the image of an ox that eats grass. They rejected the God who delivered them, the one who performed great deeds in Egypt (Psalm 106:19-21). This comes to mind sometimes when I have visited churches in Europe in the Rococo style. The inner walls are sometimes so covered with images and ornamentation that it is difficult for people to get their bearings; there’s just too much going on. Like the Baroque churches, these opulent interiors drew gasps of wonder from visiting pilgrims. During the counter reformation, the style was set against the design of the simpler Protestant churches as an expression of the triumph of the Catholic

church. We had an old chapel like that in the place I lived in Rome and I found it very distracting. The Rococo was designed to impress but it gave me a headache. In the days when the Mass was in Latin, with the congregation having nothing to watch but the priest’s back, I suppose they welcomed a little uplifting distraction. When I was growing up in Saint Boniface Parish in Anaheim, the old wooden church was too small for the parish we had become. The pastor, a Belgian who had been a chaplain in the Second World War and who knew where good contemporary religious art could be found in Europe, filled the new church with beautiful mosaics and stained glass windows. As an altar boy at the early Mass, I would often miss my cues as my distracted eyes looked out at the bright colors that came streaming in. Here’s the dilemma: God is indeed other yet he created us out of love in his own image and likeness When we sinned, he sent his own Son, not only to be with us but to redeem us. (Let’s not get into the theology of the Holy Trinity; the more I think about it, the more confused I get.) God may be other but he is not beyond us. Any image we may make of the Father, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit can never match the divine wonder but artists are allowed to try and, when an artist is successful, we are not only impressed, we are inspired. Msgr. Mike
