ECLIPSE During the Summer here there’s always people stretched out on the beach or surfing the waves, with many others bent over bikes zipping up and down along PCH. But with the advent of the eclipse last Monday, lots more of us were outside squinting up toward the sun. Our staff, our collection counters and even our prayer shawl ministry were out on the patio of the parish center, passing around one pair of special glasses that Fr. Ben had bought at the 7/11. The consensus of the view among us was unanimous, “Wow!” I’m glad I saw it because I can’t be sure I’ll be around for the next one. An eclipse is a cosmic event. The prophet, Isaiah, has a good description: “The sun will be dark when it rises. And the moon refuse to shine.” For him it is a description of how God will “bring disaster upon the world” to check the pride of the haughty “and bring low the arrogance of ruthless men.” Ezekiel is pretty much of the same opinion: “when I extinguish you, I will cover the sun with a cloud and moon will not give its light.” Another prophet, Joel, agrees, using almost exactly the same words. In the New Testament, Jesus describes an eclipse as part of the distress that will be part of the end times when “they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory, and he will send out the angels and gather his chosen ones from the four winds, from the farthest bounds of earth to the farthest bounds of heaven” (Mk.13:26-27.) The author of the Book of Revelation has a technicolor description: “Then I watched as [the Lamb] broke the sixth seal. And there was a violent earthquake; the sun turned black as a funeral pall and the moon all red as blood.” (Rev. 6:12.) After Jesus was crucified Luke reported, “It was now about noon and darkness came over the

whole land until three in the afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun” (Lk.23:44.) When an eclipse was witnessed before scientists figured out it worked, those seeing it did not have the cosmology to know that it was an altogether natural heavenly alignment of the moon and the sun. They presumed it was a threat or divine judgment. But they were close observers of the natural world, which is not surprising because they spent so much more time out of doors than we do. The stars could tell you where you were and what direction to take on a journey. The Pope has his own observatory, directed by Br. Guy Consolmagno SJ, who watched the recent eclipse outside of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, because it was judged to be the place where the eclipse would have the greatest totality. He was hosted by the local parish, Saints Peter and Paul. Asked if there was a spiritual dimension to an eclipse, he answered, “Yes, there is. It is simply that it reminds us of the immense beauty in the universe that occurs outside of our own petty set of concerns. It pulls us out of ourselves and makes us remember that we are part of a big and glorious and beautiful universe… “God could have made the universe in lots of different ways. God chose to make a universe that was rational, so that we could predict these eclipses with enormous precision, and at the same time beautiful, so it is not only that the eclipse occurs just when it is supposed to, but that, along with the delight that our calculations are right, there is the delight at seeing the beauty that comes, that we can experience, while we are underneath this eclipse.” Msgr. Mike

OUR PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY St. Anne’s Prayer Shawl Ministry began in 2009 under the auspices of St. Anne’s Women’s Guild. The Ministry members knit or crochet shawls for the Ministry all year. At Christmas, members make warm hats and scarves that are given to homeless men, women and children through local charities. A Prayer Shawl is meant to give solace and support to someone in need of comfort, healing, or a special blessing. Some shawls are called “Trinity Shawls” when they are made in patterns of threes (symbolizing the Holy Trinity). The yarn, needles, and our hands and fingers are blessed by one of our priests. These shawls bear our prayers and our love for the eventual recipient. Anyone who knows the basics of knitting or crocheting can make a Prayer Shawl! Our core members are happy to assist any new member. While we normally gather on the third Monday of each month in the Parish Hall at 9:45 a.m., the majority of the knitting/crocheting is done at home as time permits – some can make a shawl in a few days, some of us take a month or more!
