UNKNOWN FAULTS

I

had the strangest dream last night. I saw an old Studebaker speeding down a wide avenue like they have in big cities like New York. There were no other vehicles on the road, thank goodness, because the car was going the wrong way on a one-way street. Then I woke up asking myself: what was that all about? Is my life racing in the wrong direction and I don’t know it? The penitents that come to my confessional inspire me. These are people who admit to some of the ways in which they are going in the wrong direction. I do the same when I myself confess. Yet the psalmist reminds us that “Though your servant is careful of {keeping the law] …yet who can detect failings? Cleanse me of my unknown faults.” Oftentimes a close friend, a sibling or a spouse will be the one who knows you well enough to see and point out your unnoticed faults. Not that you are likely in the first instant to be grateful for the information. My initial reaction is almost always defensive. Who are you to be offended by the likes of me?! Someone pulled me aside recently and whispered quietly in my ear, “You’ll want to check your zipper.” I was embarrassed, sure, but when I thought about all the places I was going to be later that day, I became grateful. Thank God that man was kind enough to point it out. I think there may be two of me. The outside me who knows how to take his place in the world, who speaks with a calm and dignified voice, someone who is obviously organized and competent. Then there is the inside me that turns left rather than right and gets lost, who daydreams and forgets to bring with him what he needs to work that day, someone who experiences life as more of perplexing question than an obvious answer. The inside me needs people who are honest enough to point out my unknown faults.

I belong to a priest support group and we have been meeting for more years than I can remember. Over that time they have been listening to me each month describe what’s important to me in my life and they listen very carefully. I was talking one day about a recent experience I had and one of them nodded and said, “Doesn’t this remind you of what you said you were going to do six months ago?” He was holding me accountable as every member of the group had agreed to do. So I had to own up and admit that I had not done what I said I was going to do and that I was at fault. Not pretty but it did move me in the right direction. Sometimes I ask God to make my life easier but he is determined to make my life better and that means that I must keep going at whatever speed in the right direction. I’d rather take a nap or look through a magazine but he keeps nudging me, dropping hints, inspiring others to set me straight. If I want to get better, I better get used to it and accept all that helps me see myself as I really am. Msgr. Mike PS: The fresco of the Ascension of the Lord by Giotto reproduced on the cover of the bulletin was painted between 1304-1306 and is located in the Scrovegni Chapel, in Padua, Italy. There’s another Ascension by Giotto in Assisi. What is unusual is the sideways view of Jesus that Giotto gives us and the way the image of Christ is reaching up toward heaven, almost as though he was walking up hidden stairs. Some scholars believe it references an earlier iconographic style.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD Children’s Liturgy of the Word, geared towards ages 4— 10, is offered year-round during the 10:00 a.m. Mass on Sundays. This is an opportunity for children to be with their peers and engaged in mass. Children begin Mass with their families until they are called forward with their Catechists for a blessing and proceed to the Children’s Liturgy Room. The Sunday readings are proclaimed using texts suited to the children’s ability to comprehend. Psalms are sung in response, reflection leads into catechetical experiences, and conclude with intercessory prayer. The children rejoin their families and our faith community in the Church for the presentation of the gifts. It is not necessary to sign up or register for children to attend! While the PreK-8th grade faith formation program is on summer vacation, children are encouraged to continue their faith formation journey at the Children’s Liturgy.
