Salary Guide for Managers in Engineering, Science and IT 2016
Preamble
Key findings
• Our survey shows that over the past year, average annual salary movements across engineering, science and IT management roles ranged from 2.6% to 2.3% to 2.8% respectively, outperforming both the Consumer Price Index (1.3%) and general wages growth (2.1%). This increase underlines the value that STEM professionals in management roles deliver every day at the enterprise level. • Base salaries ranged from $101,150 to $159,500 for engineering managers. • Base salaries ranged from $101,150 to $140,000 for science managers. • Base salaries ranged from $103,393 to $165,000 for IT managers. • Total packages ranged from $120,463 to $186,788 for engineering managers. • Total packages ranged from $119,690 to $167,276 for science managers. • Total packages ranged from $120,932 to $197,917 for IT managers. • Engineering managers fared best with the highest average total package of $216,247 at 25 to 30 years’ experience. • In the Private sector, median annual base salary movements ranged from 1.7% to 1.6% to 2.2% for engineering, science and IT managers respectively. • In the Public sector, median annual base salary movements ranged from 2.5% to 2.5% to 1.7% for engineering, science and IT managers respectively. • Average performance incentives for managers ranged from $10,647 in engineering, $16,305 in science to $19,907 in IT.
Technology-management professionals with engineering, science and IT backgrounds form the basis of the STEM workforce that drives innovation and productivity in Australia. At the enterprise level, the attraction and retention of managers with STEM backgrounds is fastbecoming one of the key challenges facing business leaders. A recent Deloitte report found that “four powerful forces - from demographic upheavals and the rise of digital technology to rapid business-model innovation, and socially driven evolution in the employer-employee relationship - are driving change for both HR functions and the organisations they serve, creating talent challenges and potential solutions radically different from those faced by previous generations of leaders.” 1 Without proper talent retention strategies in place, organisations risk losing their engineering, science and IT management professionals and, in turn, their capacity to respond strategically to these radical changes. Ensuring STEM professionals in key management roles are remunerated in line with current market rates should be fundamental to an organisation’s reward and recognition strategy. An investment in STEM talent is a direct investment in technical and innovation capability. Professionals Australia is committed to providing specialist remuneration information services to support these important objectives.

About the survey
The data contained in this report was compiled from the latest Professionals Australia engineers, scientists and IT employment and remuneration surveys. The analysis is based on a total of 530 responses.
Definition of management roles In each of the engineering, science and IT remuneration and employment surveys, respondents selfreported their management status. For the purposes of this survey analysis, those who identified management as their main job responsibility were included in the sample.
Sample The sample on which this survey was comprised was as follows:
111 267 152
Engineers
Scientists

Statistical terms used For the purposes of salary analysis, the following statistical terms were used: • N: The number of observations recorded for each category; • Lower decile (10th Percentile): The value below which 10% of observations were recorded. Not reported where N is less than 10; • Lower quartile (25th Percentile): The value below which 25% of observations were recorded. Not reported where N is less than 5; • Median (50th Percentile): The value below which 50% of observations were recorded. Not reported where N is less than 4; • Upper quartile (75th Percentile): The value below which 75% of observations were recorded. Not reported where N is less than 5; • Upper decile (90th Percentile): The value below which 90% of observations were recorded. Not reported where N is less than 10; • Mean: The sum of individual salary values divided by the number of observations; • Interquartile range: The values between which 50% of observations fall. The lower boundary is the lower quartile, the upper boundary the upper quartile; and • Response %: Proportion of the survey sample represented by the number of observations in a given category. Statistics for Base Salary and Total Package are calculated separately for each of the sample respondents, and then ranked. The median is not, therefore, a reflection of the middle ranked respondent across all categories, but rather, the middle value of the particular component when all values of that component are ranked. As a consequence, the component statistics will not add up to the value given by the overall statistic.

Where a significant difference exists between the value of the mean and the median, this will indicate the following: Where the mean is higher than the median, a number of high values were recorded, sufficient to skew the mean upwards away from the median; Conversely, if the mean is lower than the median, a number of low values were recorded, sufficient to skew the mean downwards, away from the median. If the mean and median are relatively close, the distribution was approximately normally distributed.
Other terms used Base salary Participants were asked to provide both their base salary and an hourly rate of pay. Where a participant did not provide a base salary, but did provide an hourly rate, this was used in conjunction with their reported hours worked each not including overtime to determine an equivalent base salary. Total package The total remuneration package received by a participant, including the value of all components of remuneration. Total package includes the following: • Base salary; • Annual leave loading; • Overtime; • Award allowances; • Employer superannuation contributions; • Motor vehicle; • Parking; • Performance pay; • Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT); • Other items eligible for FBT; and • Other items not eligible for FBT. Where a non-cash benefit such as a motor vehicle is provided, an estimate is made of the salary equivalent value of the benefit.
Methodology Superannuation The dollar value of a participant’s superannuation as a component of their total package was calculated by multiplying their employer’s contribution percentage by their base salary. Where a participant did not specify their employer’s contribution percentage, but did indicate they received superannuation as part of their role the government mandated minimum rate of 9.5% was used. Annual salary movement Annual salary movements were calculated by taking the percentage change from a participant’s annual base salary 12 months ago to their annual base salary at the time of the survey. The calculation is only performed for participants indicating they had not received a promotion or changed employers in the last 12 months. The calculation was also not performed for individuals with less than one year of experience. Valuation of motor vehicles The value given to a motor vehicle provided as part of a salary package has been determined based on the following formula: 22.5% of cost of vehicle + 25 cents per km. Cost of vehicle is the original cost of the car inclusive of government taxes and charges and dealer delivery fees. Capital costs within the formula are based on 22.5% straight-line depreciation over four years with a 10% salvageable value at the end of those four years. Vehicle running costs are based on an average derived from the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria annual survey of car running costs. These costs include registration, insurance, fuel and servicing. For the purposes of the analysis contained in this report, the Fringe Benefits Tax statutory rate of 20% is used in calculating the FBT liability component of a motor vehicle. www.professionalsaustralia.org.au
