2011 Summer Institute Dedicated to the Memory of...

Julie Elizabeth Elliott

AVID lost one of its brightest stars, Julie Elliott, in June. Julie had leadership woven into the fabric of her life. In her early years, she was Chair for Student Body Activities, and a Stanford University graduate. Her belief in education as the door to equity and opportunity was the guiding principle of her career. For many years she was an English teacher and administrator in the San Diego Unified School District. When Crawford High School was named an AVID demonstration school, Julie was the principal. In 1999, she moved to AVID Center as the Associate California State Director. She continued to expand her AVID leadership role across the state and nation as California Division Director and National Director of AVID Demonstration Schools. Julie brought laughter and a love of life with her to these roles. Her commitment to students and colleagues, her zest for life, and her impact on our nation’s education is her legacy. She will be deeply missed.

New Curriculum We are Excited to Share the Newest Addition to the AVID Curriculum Family! Supporting Math in the AVID Elective demystifies the complex process of supporting AVID students’ access to mathematical concepts, with straightforward skills and strategies. The book’s design centers on supporting those AVID Elective teachers having difficulty helping their AVID students when math questions come up during tutorials or in the note-taking process. The book does not attempt to teach math content, but rather delineates strategies teachers can implement without always having content knowledge. What will students do in the AVID Elective? • Connect math concepts during tutorials • Learn to develop better questions, summaries, and fill in gaps while taking Cornell notes in math • Develop higher-level summaries • Participate in various inquiry-based activities that support critical thinking What does the book provide to AVID Elective teachers? • Questions to ask and methods for seeking support from math teachers, in plain language • Multiple ready-to-use lessons for the AVID Elective class • Two ready-to-use, math-based Socratic Seminar lessons • Two videos demonstrating how to: o Utilize Cornell notes in math o Utilize a strategy to support making math connections during tutorials

The book and DVD package is $69 (There is no separate companion CD) The Padres Foundation is proud to support AVID through the Padres Scholars Program
